Eurovision 2017 winner Salvador Sobral is reportedly in intensive care in a Lisbon hospital as he awaits a heart transplant operation.

According to Spanish newspaper El Mundo Salvador – who scored Portugal’s first ever victory in the annual songfest in May with his ballad Amar Pelos Dois – was admitted to hospital last week, after cancelling a string of scheduled concerts to focus on his health.

It came just days after the 27-year-old, who suffers from a serious heart condition, broke down in tears onstage during a farewell concert in Estoril, Portugal – becoming visibly emotional as he performed his Eurovision winner alongside his sister Luisa.

Local media has reported that his health has since deteriorated, leaving him in urgent need of a new heart once a donor can be found.

Salvador previously announced his career break in a YouTube video, saying that he needed to take time out in order to focus on his recovery.

‘It is no longer a secret to anyone that my health is fragile,’ he explained in the clip.

‘I have a problem. Unfortunately, the time has come to give my body to science and consequently to remove myself from the life of concerts and music in general.’

Salvador’s health issues initially came to light during Eurovision season in May, when he was unable to leave his medical team to attend technical rehearsals ahead of the show – with Luisa, who also wrote Amar Pelos Dois, standing in for him.

Initially, he wanted to keep his potentially life-threatening condition a secret but following his performance of the song in the Portuguese national final, he required urgent surgery to repair two hernias.

He was able to perform in the national final, winning the ticket to Eurovision despite being in recovery from that operation – and went on to score a resounding victory at Eurovision with 758 points, giving Portugal their first ever win after 48 previous attempts.

The 2018 Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Lisbon on May 8, 10 and 12.

It's really sad news. Hope he manages to pull through. I didn't like the song but wouldn't wish death on him.

plus if he does die it's going to be a memorial next year and all the songs will be a snooze and I'm not spending over a grand being there next year on that.
