Got to be honest, and I'm sure it's good and everything but... I'm pretty much convinced that Nintendo is buying reviews (not just for this, but in general).

how can they be buying reviews though when there’s like 60 outstanding reviews surely they can’t be paying for all of them?

They have no need to pay for them, Mario has always (rightfully) received acclaim!

The sign that they're paying for reviews is if there are large differences between review score- there is zero chance that Breath of the Wild or Odyssey paid for reviews

I'm going to pick it up tomorrow morning so hopefully Walmart has them in stock!

Also just bought Mario and Rabbids on a whim because it was 40% off here in Canada (for a two-month old game) :O
My mum keeps mentioning "we got a parcel coming tomorrow :) ". If that parcel doesn't contain Super Mario Odyssey I'm gonna be an orphan. Not gonna kill my mum I'm just gonna do that thing where i make her my not legal guardian. so i can be put up for adoption? whats that called?

I'm not saying Nintendo games aren't often GREAT games... it's just that the number that are 100% or 10/10 seems disproportionate to other games that are just as great? I mean... really? 10/10, literally zero flaws? Breath Of The Wild getting an array of 10/10 scores when it had notable framerate problems that must have been present for launch reviewers? That doesn't make sense either.
See I'm not saying these aren't 9/10 amazing games... just wondering if there might be some kickbacks going on to nudge some of those 9's to a 10 :joker:
I suppose it's more likely that it's just plain ol' nostaligia making reviewers ignore small flaws, though. I do wish reviewers were more impartial than that, though. A 10/10 should be something exceptionally rare, surely... reserved for games that are well made, well written, AND with zero (or damn close to zero) technical issues. A masterpiece of story and gameplay that suffers stuttering or framerate drops is a 9/10...

No game is perfect, I often take 10/10's to mean 'Yeah it has some issues but the game itself overcomes them completely'.
BOTW has framerate issues but that doesn't make it any less of a 10/10 game.

Yeah I'd agree with this. I think game reviews should just be based on how enjoyable a game is. If a game has issues but it's still 10/10 in terms of enjoyment then so be it. The frame rate drops in BotW are pretty rare as well, certainly not enough to account for a 10% drop in the game's score.

SO it wasn't in the parcel BUT my mum bought it at the shops to surprise me  we had a mini argument because she wouldnt let me give her the money she spent and she insists its a month old Birthday gift
What I like about the game is that it feels so rewarding. Mainly because of how many moons you can get. I feel so obliged to just take my time and explore the world and when I do I always find something interesting, just gives me an icentive to keep playing
I really do thing this could be my favourite Mario game ever (sorry TTYD and 64 </3). I loved 3D World's format but I forgot how I preferred the "open world" feel of some Mario games (despite the fact most of the game is pretty linear in terms of how story progresses, but that's Mario for ya)
ALSO "Jump up, Super star!" is STILL in my head 4 months later gah
breath of the wild isn’t a 10/10 anyway :worry:

When Skyward Sword got a 10/10, Breath of the Wild is most certainly a 10
(Despite the fact I hammered the **** out of BotW, I didn't like something about it... and I can't place my finger on it, which is odd since I think it's my favourite Zelda. That said I've only finished about 6 Zelda games overall)

Nah lol, I need even more than 5 in that one but some you have to go back to later on
It’s really annoying me though, those large unbreakable silver boxes in each kingdom and I don’t have a clue what you’re supposed to do with them

Honestly I LIVE for it. Mario's so used to really cartoony and colourful graphics and it's such a relief to see that they got a nice balance of that. The levels don't look gritty, and they're such a departure from the usual levels of Mario while remaining familiar
I just finished the game. The ending song is  (as is the ending... and the game of course. Super Mario Odyssey is the prime example of post-game content done right!)
I just gotta collect another 600 or so Moons :)
Bumping because I got all the moons  and ALSO the new (free!!) DLC coming out next month

This has such a Sonic Adventure 1/Dreamcast-y vibe to it. But yeah I want a SwitchMy in-laws bought my daughter one for Christmas (well... My father in law works for an online retailer and had a tonne of "staff points" built up so they bought it with those) :hee:... My wife was like "No no no that's far too much!" but I was like "ERR NO IT'S FINE" so now I basically have a switch because she's only interested in it for crap like 1-2-switch when she has friends round, otherwise she's exclusively into Minecraft on PS4 and Roblox on PC. Almost entirely Roblox.
So yeah. My in-laws bought my daughter a switch for me to play single player games and me and my wife to play Mario Kart [emoji23].
Should I get Mario though? I can't decide if I think it looks good or... Stupid... And I don't trust that the reviews aren't over inflated "because it's Mario!!!".

like there’s no difficulty whatsoever
it’s definitely one of the most overrated games i’ve ever played
i’d give it a 7/10

If you ask me? It's a must buy. Easily the best 3D Mario, filled with lovely little throwbacks, an amazing soundtrack, and stunning visuals. The story's pretty basic, obviously, but I find that the comedy was on point, which is usually lacking in 3D Mario's
It's also got a MASSIVE post-game which was great to see. Makes up for the short story
If you're a completionist, it's rewarding imo. I only found that it became a little bit of a chore to start hunting down the last few moons when I got down to about 5 left in each world, but you still feel like you've accomplished something by doing it. And then there's the regional coins, and the coins themselves, which actually serve a purpose
As Scott said though, the game is quite easy. Like, the last level is hard, but it's NOTHING compared to SM3DW's Champion's Road.
Also, it's pretty short for a 3D Mario. I remember 3D World and 64 taking me a good while to 100%, while in Odyssey, I 100%ed it pretty quickly. That may be because they took out the lives system and you aren't taken back to the hub everytime you get a star/complete a level, but idk
I think the idea is that it's meant to be short for speedrunners, while also boasting a lot of content to keep you occupied? Idk I'm glad I bought it but I feel sorta biased, not so much because I like Mario, but more so because I feel rewarded for the experience. 9/10 for me

Roblox, your daughter is so cute  Also, Minecraft PC Edition ftmw
I'm basically waiting for the Switch to get it's second model. They always have the first version of their portables and then the next version is slimmed down, has much better battery life and just generally much better etc
Unless they go the console route and they don't update it for some reason o_O... I don't think Nintendo usually releases additional versions of their consoles, unless it's like a new paintjob or something

It feels designed for in-the-room multiplayer like the GameCube and Switch. I think even the upcoming Pokemon is rumoured to be more of a full sit down story-driven experience than the usual pick-up-and-play style. My daughter actually forgotten that it could even undock, and was baffled when I said to take it up to her room when she had a friend over to play 12switch :joker:.
