Minimum alcohol pricing in Scotland: How much booze will cost under new rules
Aftab Ali
This is how much alcohol will cost in Scotland under new minimum pricing rules
The big news story in the UK today is that Scotland is set to become the first country in the world to introduce minimum unit pricing for alcohol.
The country’s highest court gave its backing to the controversial measure in what ministers in Edinburgh have hailed as an “historic and far-reaching judgment.”
The move comes after figures showed there were 1,265 alcohol related deaths in Scotland in 2016 - a rise of 10% on the previous year.
Alcohol misuse results in about 670 hospital admissions and 24 deaths a week - with the Scottish Government saying death rates are almost 1.5 times higher now than they were in the early 1980s.
And it estimated that alcohol misuse costs Scotland some £3.6 billion a year - the equivalent of £900 for every adult.
With sales figures showing that, in 2016, 17% more alcohol was sold per person in Scotland than in England and Wales, we take a look at how the change will hit your pocket:
A 31cl bottle of Frosty Jack’s cider contains 22.5 units of alcohol. It currently costs £3.59, but will go up to £11.25.
A 150cl of Lambrini contains 11.3 units of alcohol. Currently costing £3, it will rise to at least £5.65.
A 70cl bottle of Tesco Imperial Vodka (37.5% ABV) contains 26 units. Priced at £11 at the moment, it will cost a minimum of £13.
A 568ml can of Tennent’s Lager under minimum pricing would have to cost at least £1.15.
Four 440ml cans of five per cent strength lager would cost at least £4.40.
A bottle of wine of 12% alcohol strength would cost at least £4.50.
A 70cl bottle of whisky could not be sold for less than £14.

It's a bit of a shame. The only people this will affect are poor people and people for whom money is tight. They're being penalised because some people can't drink responsibly. Of course, the rich people will carry on regardless.

I don't think it's a good way to tackle the issue. I just watched a video actually about how Iceland tackled a similar problem they had and succeeded. Iceland is such a brilliant country :flutter:

The northern countries in Europe have higher alcohol use that the south. It's thought to be because of the cold.
This new law in Scotland is probably going to result in booze cruises to places in the north of England.

Natural competition? The supermarkets are like the energy companies they all price fix.
Now they don't get to, as an ex addict I can see the pros and cons of this. However it's hard to envisage the future effects on issues such as domestic violence, child poverty, alcohol related death, crime, social disorder or productivity.

Scottish Government says this is linked to alcohol being 60% more affordable than in the 1980s, with wide ranging costs to public health.
Its current MUP proposal of a 50p per unit charge means four 440ml cans of five per cent strength lager would cost at least £4.40, a 12 per cent bottle of wine would be at least £4.50 and a 70cl bottle of whisky must cost at least £14.

The main drinks that suffer from this will be those that are overwhelmingly targeted at and drunk by alcoholics and underage or young drinkers so I don't see this as a bad thing really. Those prices are not exactly extortionate so it's not like moderate drinkers are being priced out by this.

I say put it up further but as a tax that goes straight into the NHS .
Also a "minimum" price of £14 for a 70cl bottle of whiskey?? :joker: If you're willing to drink £14 whiskey you might as well just spend £1.15 on a full litre. Of petrol. And just drink that.

Maybe that's exactly who are being looked it in relation to this, nobody is being penalised, the cost of alcohol is disproportionate to other consumables this will just bring it in line so where's the issue?
'the Alcohol (Minimum Pricing) (Scotland) Act 2012 was first passed by Scottish Government to address a health crisis responsible for 1,265 deaths in 2016, an increase of 10 per cent on the year before.
The Scottish Government says this is linked to alcohol being 60 per cent more affordable than in the 1980s, with wide ranging costs to public health.'
