Will.

So since I’ve started working I’ve been getting taxed quite a bit
My net income is £2400 over 3 months however I have been taxed £500 in total (£1900), surely this is far too much?

I think you should talk to your boss about it, some people do get taxed so much but in April you can get it all back if you have been overpaying.
Will.
29-11-2017, 11:12 PM
This month I earnt £930 however £220 was taken away in tax so I only received £710.

Well you've been taxed about 20% of your earnings, which is the standard rate, but you'll get a tasty rebate if it's too much, or if you don't end up earning enough to pay tax (£10k) so it's all good.
Will.
29-11-2017, 11:17 PM
Yeah it’s £550 in total I’ve been taxed over 3 months.
Last month I only earnt £500 but they still took a further £100 away in tax. :skull:

They probably have the wrong Tax Code for you so you will get it back.

Yeah probably
So if I don’t earn over £11500 by next April I’ll get her back?

£100 is 20% of £500, so you're paying the standard tax rate. Does your contract have the possibility/flexibility for full time work? If so, you probably have the standard tax code.

Yes, 5th April 2018 is when the next tax year ends and you will have to fill in a something to claim it back
are you doing the same hours each week and what are you on hourly?

You shouldn't have to fill anything out I used to get cheques sent to me randomly in the post.

I'll clarify - the money she was sent was for "April to April", but I think they just didn't get round to telling her about it until November.

How are you earning nearly a grand a month on like 5 quid an hour ?
Well you've been taxed about 20% of your earnings, which is the standard rate, but you'll get a tasty rebate if it's too much, or if you don't end up earning enough to pay tax (£10k) so it's all good.
20% isn't the standard rate that's basic rate ie emergency tax.
Phone the tax office Will and tell them you've been placed on an emergency tax code.

20% isn't the standard rate that's basic rate ie emergency tax, 12% is the standard rate.
Phone the tax office Will and tell them you've been placed on an emergency tax code.
Band (https://www.gov.uk/income-tax-rates)- Basic rate
Taxable income - £11,501 to £45,000
Tax rate - 20%
...
...
Basic rate has always been emergency tax though
Either way that's after personal allowance, Will hasn't made anywhere near the personal allowance so he shouldn't have been taxed at all.
And 2400 he should have paid no more than a couple of hundred quid tops
...
If you have been issued with a BR tax code, then you will not receive a Personal Allowance and you will be taxed at the 20% basic rate.
That's Emergency tax.

I agree with those who tell you that you've been put on an emergency code which often happens when you start a new job.
You don't pay tax for the first £11,500 of your gross annual income, so you will have a nice return coming to you.
Go to this website and call the number on the page I've linked. Just make sure you have your NI number to hand. https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/income-tax-enquiries-for-individuals-pensioners-and-employees

I know, but like I said upthread, if he doesn't end up making £11.5k in the tax year, it will be rebated, so it's all good.
You actually used to get the return on the wage (I always loved those months ) but last time I had trouble with my tax code, hmrc told me they don't do that now and it's sent out in April when the tax year ends.
I know, but like I said upthread, if he doesn't end up making £11.5k in the tax year, it will be rebated, so it's all good.
He still needs to contact the tax office though to get a proper tax code not an emergency one.

Will did your last employer not give you a P45 to hand to your next employer ? this is how your new employer knows what your tax code should be, if you have no P45 any employer will automatically put you on emergency tax. If you do have one then hand it to the new employer and you will get an automatic refund through your pay packet. If not its a long wait from Inland Revenue.

funnily enough Will you dont get taylor made individual taxation :joker:
YOu get taxed as normal like you will earn over the basic thresh hold and then at the end of the tax year when they divvy up you may get a rebate
its the standard thing but call the tax office and they will explain

Nobody pays tax up to £11.5k so if he's earning 12k a year, he will only pay tax on £500 a year. If he's earning £20k a year he will only pay tax on £8.5k of his gross income. If he's earning £11.5k a year he won't pay tax.
He will be rebated regardless of what he's earning because he's presently paying tax on his entire gross salary.

that's fine if HMRC actually take any notice of P45s being issued I had to ring them up when my tax code didnt change after two months, wait for 40 minutes to be told, oh yes we do have the new figures, they just didn't bother to apply them. :umm2:
Will your payslip should have the tax code 1150 and literally you should not be paying any tax if you earn less than 11,500 a year, anything earned above that is taxed at 20% unless you earn more than 45,000 which I don't think you do :hee: you will get a nice lump sum just after Christmas...you might need to contact them to sort it though

You're definitely on BR (emergency tax code) so you're paying a flat 20% on all earnings. You'll either get a rebate at the end of the year or you'll get it back in monthly chunks via PAYE if you get it sorted quickly. Personally, I would recommend getting it sorted before the new tax year rolls round (beginning of April). You'll get it back either way, but it's more straightforward if it's all one tax year.
Note that depending on your earnings, you will still pay a bit of National Insurance before 11.5k, so it's not all take home pay. On exactly £11.5k income you will pay zero income tax but approx. £30/month N.I.

Oh, and if you're not on a zero hour contract you're probably opted into a sh***y pension scheme.

Thanks everyone
It says my tax code is 0T
I won’t be earning over 11500 by April. I’m earning around 700-900 a month.
And what’s confusing is this month I earned £930 and If you times that by 12 you don’t even get 11500.

Yeah that's basically the same thing as BR. 0T means zero personal allowance, so you're paying 20%. Get it fixed and you will get it back :hee:.
Like I said though you will still pay National Insurance (12% of earnings over £157 a week) though... which on £930 a month would be roughly £7 a week (£30 a month) and you might pay a little into a bull**** pension scheme but that will be a very small amount.
Will.
30-11-2017, 09:48 AM
Yeah I’m also getting national insurance taken off but that’s just like £30 a month
