The jewellery is portraying a black person not a white person with a black face though, how is that offensive

This is what I thought. I think the Daily Mail might have got it wrong though, apparently Blackamoor jewelry does have racist connotations (because they're linked to slavery) but I don't think it has anything to do with 'blackface'. I'd never heard of it either though so I could be wrong, that's just what I found from googling it just now.

Oh actually the Daily Mail doesn't seem to have mentioned blackface either  It's just you LT :hee:

And the point that it is a representation of colonialist attitudes in imperialist Britain.
'Though full-lipped and somewhat broad-nosed, the African's facial features are partly Europeanized. Possibly based on a real individual, the London-based African model known as Wilson, the depersonalized figure calls to mind Van Ost's ‘Blackamoor’ and his kneeling position, which, as Kirk Savage and others have pointed out, denotes servility and deference.55 This was no doubt a reassuring and soothing theme at a time when fears of slave rebellion were widespread'

I don't know what her intention was but it's a strange brooch.
Even if it was of a white person...
Funny thing to wear...

How can a JEWELRY wear blackface? it's an object. If it was made black, than it's black.

Noone's complaining about blackface to be fair, the thread title really does need changing as it's very misleading (I'm assuming that LT saw 'Blackamoor' - the company name, and perhaps misread it as 'blackface'?) I cant find any reference to anyone complaining about blackface.
The jewelry does have racist connotations for other reasons though and that's what the complaints are about. Personally I'd never heard of Blackamoor jewelery and I wouldn't have realised it was considered racist by some people, is it that widely known? I think it's reasonable to assume she just didn't know about it.

There isn't a single reference to it being related to blackface in any article I can find on it. If it's your opinion that it looks like it's blackface then fair enough but the thread title should at least reflect what the actual controversy is about since it's a 'news' section, rather than an opinion that is separate to that, otherwise people will be mislead into thinking the story is about something that it isn't, (which is exactly what has happened).
You've capitalised 'BLACKFACE' in the title even though it has nothing to do with the story, if it wasn't a mistake then I don't see how it can be anything other than clickbait.

Usually if you make a thread I’ll take everything with a pinch of salt, because as this and other threads have shown, you’ll do anything for a reply :hee:

I think the fundamental misunderstanding here is that an actual black person's face = "blackface". To clarify for LT; blackface is, specifically, a NON black person "blacking up" their face to imitate... Actual black people don't have "blackface" :umm2:
As for the "unfortunate" jewellery choice - it would take A LOT of convincing for me to believe that she didn't know exactly what she was doing :idc:

its not a racial thing, its more of class thing with the royal's, you have to understand that white upper class families don't marry for love, they marry to keep there wealth, keep the wealth keep the land, they have been doing that for hundreds of years and its kept them rich, but there parents of that class system don't show any real emotion to there children, look at princess Diana,Churchill,Prince Philip, and we hear what there parents where like, and Harry marrying for love is really rare in that class of structure, and there is some anger because why can he marry for love but I couldn't, and then there is the blue blood thing, and Meghan does not have enough of it to be accepted in the royal family,

I'm more concerned by her flashlight hat.
The question really is whether it is her standard brooch or whether she put it on specially for the occasion. If it was specially for the occasion, what message was she intending to send

She probably put it on to match her jumper.:shrug:So you're saying she's thick and ignorant, rather than passive aggressively xenophobic. Well... Certainly plausible I suppose!
