It's clear he doesn't why else would he make such stupid comments. The surprising thing is he is a businessman so surely not unintelligent and he has advisers who could explain it. So it makes you wonder. Is it all playing politics at the expense of the world?
In terms of me requiring him to be knowledgeable on a subject, global warming wouldn't even make my top 50. 4 years of him in power will make zero difference to the environment. There are a lot more immediate concerns

He doesn't understand global warming, but a lot of people - deniers and advocates - confuse weather with climate.
In early December there were unusually-high temperatures in California (90 degrees) and a lot people were commenting that was a result of global warming. Another example I remember is Leonardo Di Caprio saying during his Oscar acceptance-speech that global warming meant they had to move filming because it was too warm.
Also, here in this country, whenever there is an extreme weather event it often gets linked to global warming.
The trouble is that it is complicated science that proves global warming, and most people aren't going to read up on, or understand, that, so they have to take it on trust, basically.

There is inertia.
The amount of changes that the USA could make in 4 years are trivial. If they have already purchased environmentally friendlier plant and machinery, they arent going to replace it with less friendly equivalents in that time, why would they. Car manufacturers aren't going to relax their standards etc. etc.
To reply to a previous poster, it is ignorance to think that climate change can be affected in the time Trump is in power. He could well have a catastrophic effect, but it won't be in ignoring global warming commitments.

For me it's his willful spreading of false information that's the problem rather than his lack of knowledge, I don't really expect him to know much about anything  but he'll have enough people around him who are knowledgeable for him to give correct information on things like this if he wants to try and communicate it out to the people that follow him.
I think as well that although any physical impact he might have regarding climate change in 4 years would be minute, there's the psychological effect he has on his supporters who may take some of the things he says as fact that could have much longer lasting implications. He really does need to be more careful with the information he's putting out there.

You think my opinion on him or what he tweets is negated because you happen to believe that his stance on global warming is a joke? No it doesn't work like that sorry LT. He's the President of the US and if he's going to tweet misinformation to his supporters then he's going to get criticized for it. And he's a known climate change denier so I'm not sure why you're so convinced he was joking anyway. Has he come out and said that? Or is this just coming from you?

When I skidded over in the ice the other day, I grumbled that we could have done with a bit of global warming. But then I'm always making stupid jokes/sarky comments, and I'm not the President of the USA...
