It's the Daily Mail that's focusing on this sis rather than the fact that the Scottish NHS got praised as by far the best in the UK recently in a report!!

...just going off topic with the flag...I was thinking a bit the other day about our National Anthem...obviously should be mostly to represent a nation as people but it’s very Me, me, me more with the queen over the nation itself...I really don’t like it at all actually, nothing about it...some country anthems can feel very emotional in their content, especially in events where the country is being represented../..sporting events...for me, nothing about ours stirs emotion at all...

Agree entirely! and what's wrong with the Scottish flag, the queen isn't only represented by the union flag is she?
It's not a slight on her madge not to hoist the union flag at all.

That's no surprise to me, the DM is trash.

Scotland has its own parliament, an SNP government in place.
What is wrong anyway with this if she is.

I have great admiration for Nicola Sturgeon and I do think the SNP is doing good I'm govt.
If I lived in Scotland I'd be happy to keep Nicola as first Minister for sure.

Scotland voted no. They are still part of the UK. Nicola doesn't want to fly the flag though.... fine. We don't want to pay them more per head of capita than any other country in the UK. See how she likes that.

...hmm no, it’s just the anthem itself as an isolated thing/the tune/the lyrics etc I’m not keen on, Alf ...not patriotism that I’m lacking as such...I don’t find it as emotional as some others and for me an anthem should convey emotion ideally...I also don’t think a sovereignty is a nation’s representative in the present day in the same as it was back in the day of the penning of anthems..so a little too much about the queen herself, rather than our nation...I’m all for a great and patriotic anthem, just not really liking this particular one as much as I would like to...I’d just probably like to think about looking to change to a new Anthem is what I guess I’m trying to say...something more representative of the nation of today...maybe get Simon Cowell to look at that one to see if he could help there...

And every year at the rugby we have to listen to that dreadful old dirge... Flower of Scotland, which is about crushing the English - EIGHT HUNDRED YEARS AGO! You'd think you'd all be getting over it by now, Trumpet.

...sorry Alf I think we’re at a little bit cross purposes here......the me, me, me wasn’t meant to indicate her being a selfish person in character...just more of an expression I used...she personally had no hand in the writing of the words of the anthem...apologies if my posts are a bit off in explaining stuff atm and quite confusing or misguiding etc...

It's a flag.

The vote was to stay part of the UK,how is democracy being flouted by this flag.
Is Scotland now not in the UK because this flag is on display. The
No,of course not.

This is however the Scottish parliament not the UK government parliament.
Were she insisting only the Scottish flag was on display at Westminster, you may have a point.
As it is what on earth is wrong with her plan.

It's for the Queens birthday and the Queen goes there, fly something to indicate she's there.
Whatever Birthday it is.
Why ask ONLY me Cherie anyway, others on this thread agree with Nicola too,you know.

It's a flag which represents the United Kingdom of which the Queen is the Head so not flying it on her Birthday is a snub to democracy

Rejecting Monarchy is snubbing Democracy? but they're two separate and diametrically opposed political philosophies. Hereditary rule (monarchy) is the opposite of democracy.

What does supporting a united Scotland and England have to do with The Queen / Monarchy? Why do you assume that anyone who supports the union of the two countries much automatically support the monarchy? They are two completely separate issues.

[edit] You also seem to be assuming that those who support the union do not support devolution, which is also false; the large majority of Scottish people fully support current and continuing devolution within the union.

Look you can't have it both ways the Queen is head of the Union, Scotland is not independent, fly your flag where ever you want but refusing to do it for the Queens Birthday is basically saying we are not part of the Union, Nicola is such a sore loser

How is not flying a flag for a (in your words) figurehead's birthday in any way saying "we are not part of the Union"?

That Scotland is an individual country that happens to be part of an economic union, rather than a vassal state that is subordinate to England? And maybe specifically in relation to the Queen's birthday... an opposition to the celebration of hereditary rule which, again, also has absolutely nothing to do with the function of the UK.

So when the EU come calling Nicola wouldn't fly the EU flag, even though Scotland is an individual country that happens to be part of an economic union, Nicola would be running that flag up the pole herself  and as for "happens to be part of an economic union" its a union that benefits Scotland greatly thanks to the English taxpayer, maybe you guys should reject the extra cash as well, rather than this "token" rebellion

It seems the Scottish daily Mail has published an apology to Nicola on this.

Apparently it was a decision taken by former First Minister Alex Salmond not her.
