View Full Version : How good is your handwriting?

And are you happy with your handwriting?...

My handwriting is squarely OK. I've played with different styles over the year, but I am trying to pick up lettering and calligraphy. I think though I have some habits I may need to break first to make the process a lot easier.

..no I’m not happy at all....my handwriting is awful...but I think it also reflects that life tends to be a rush, for me anyway... so I’m always feeling in a rush when I’m writing....it can be more neat when I have more time...actually, we spoke recently about journal writing, Maru...and I have to say, a positive about that was that it gave me more time to ‘kick back’ as it were...but then my head and thoughts weren’t clear thinking, so my handwriting was still awful.....I had to rush stuff onto the page, while I still had them in my head because often those things became completely lost with treatments etc...

...anyways, my mum always had the most beautiful handwriting...I was totally in awe of it....she can’t and doesn’t write now because she has dementia plus something equivalent to Parkinson’s disease, so she’s too ‘shaky’ to write and keep a pen or pencil steady...my dad also actually had lovely handwriting, it was quite calligraphy-ish in its style...so I come from a fine heritage of great handwriting and am a bit of a black sheep with that.....actually my eldest brother has beautiful handwriting as well...beautiful in that it’s very pretty in style but not very readable though...

I like mine but it's probably objectively 'not very good'.

OK. Can be very good if i take the time, but I tend to scribble what I mean. Still readable though, not like ****ing doctors where it just literally looks like a 2 year old has got hold of a crayon to write your medical report. **** knows how other staff read them

Nice and neat

Messy handwriting is actually a massive pet peeve of mine. It can also be dangerous if you work in healthcare

Also Maru, Americas seem to be taught a type of cursive script (which is lovely) at least all my American cousins seem to write in the same vein, not sure how you are taught at school..

Chicken-scribble, yet still totally legible, if that makes sense. It's easy enough to read, but not pretty to look at :joker:. I very rarely write anything more than a few scribbled notes by hand these days anyway.

I put 'ok' because most of the time I try and make it look good, but I have to try because naturally it's quite messy. I'm left handed though so I have an excuse :hee:

So, I was writing in my diary just now... and I thought oh yeah I was going to make a thread about handwriting. Then I recalled having a vague memory of maybe starting a thread and then just finally remembered I totally forgot all about opening this... :laugh2: Whoops! I need to start subscribing to threads I think

..no I’m not happy at all....my handwriting is awful...but I think it also reflects that life tends to be a rush, for me anyway... so I’m always feeling in a rush when I’m writing....it can be more neat when I have more time...actually, we spoke recently about journal writing, Maru...and I have to say, a positive about that was that it gave me more time to ‘kick back’ as it were...but then my head and thoughts weren’t clear thinking, so my handwriting was still awful.....I had to rush stuff onto the page, while I still had them in my head because often those things became completely lost with treatments etc...

I'd love to see your handwriting  I think that it says a lot about a person...

I'm having that same problem atm with my journal where I write too fast. It makes it harder to scan through as time goes on. I have a major advantage with typing, but I still prefer to write because I feel like my thoughts work better pen to paper... especially with note-taking.

Have you thought about carrying around a notepad for keeping random thoughts. I'd thought about getting a small voice recorder for taking down my thought as I'm always getting ideas at the worst possible moment... maybe when my mind is least active?

Did you notice any difference in your handwriting after your recovery started? My maternal side carries a form of Dystonia, similar to Parkinsons... and yeah, handwriting is a bit unpredictable from that side, so hard to compare to most of my family members. My grandmother has beautiful script... I'm thinking I will take my calligraphy set over one day (or maybe next Xmas) and help her with sending out cards...

Also Maru, Americas seem to be taught a type of cursive script (which is lovely) at least all my American cousins seem to write in the same vein, not sure how you are taught at school..

Is cursive not taught in the UK? They used to teach it here in 3rd grade in all primary schools, but some have started to drop or have already dropped I guess because wordprocessing is being taught much earlier? I'm not sure the reasoning. I only know that some schools have started to drop it from their curriculum. I actually prefer it for writing notes to someone to add a personal touch... I can write faster in script, but it does take up more room on the page... (edit) Some grades had us write papers and other classwork in script, but by high school a lot of teachers wanted print for some reason (the rest was a choice, so was a mix for me)

This is what my fast notes look like, it's not bad just looks relaxed. Still quite legible. Some teachers will be sticklers though for things like the missing ascenders on the r, but meh whatever. Are you a creative type? There's an organic quality to your writing style.

I write like a child with a broken hand.

https://i.imgur.com/4WgCWdq.jpg?1

Are you an overwriter? (hand writes above the line, looks kinda like a hook) My husband writes very similar to this. His pen grip looks like someone who writes with their left hand, but actually he is right handed. He's been trying to correct it as he's having to fill a notebook up with notes from his lawbook, etc.. and he's only allowed one mistake per page. It's been like slow torture

Maru

Here are some of my samples... switched between attempting to be pristine versus fast-writing style... I think I have a few styles actually and maybe I write according to mood... I seem to change it up sometimes in my journal. Some armchair therapist want to help me with understanding that?
