View Full Version : Have you ever had a false memory?

So I was watching YouTube last night and they were talking about the mandela effect where people thought he died in the 1980s when in reality he died in 2013 so just wondering whether anyone here has had a false memory before?

I'm skeptical about the Star Wars one, I've never heard of people remembering it as "Like, I am your father"... In fact most people surely just quote / remember the "I am your father" part?

My wife is from the "Mandela died in prison!" universe though, she says she remembers learning about it in primary school clear as day... And both of her parents insist they actually remember it happening in the 80's .

I have memories of being happy. But I have never ever been happy in my life.

I know he died long before the 80s, but I think people tend to mix Mandela up with Gandhi in a "didn't he die a very long time ago and we learned about him in history?" kind of way.

Like it was (supposedly) a huge news story, the injustice of him dying before being released, etc.

From a guy with a similar-sounding name to Luke, there are at least 300 people in my area who remember "Luke, I am your father"

Did I just enter the twilight zone :umm2: :conf: , why do people have a false memory of Mandela dying in prison in the 80's ?? .

My friend has false memories that he swears are true even if others were there and know that something else happened. He thinks others have bad memory even if it's two or more of us that were also there telling him that didn't happen. :skull:

Many people have the exact same memory, and nobody can really explain why (apart from conspiracy theorists) there are other examples like it - where thousands of people distinctly remember the exact same thig that never happened

:puzzled: But that makes no sense , I'm guessing this is older people that have this memory?? . Really bizarre and I've never heard of it . I wonder what their brain did when it got to 2013 when Mandela ACTUALLY died then ?? very peculiar .

It doesnt make sense at all! But I have no idea, I wasn't around in the 80s.

But that Youtube video did make a point about the Snow White quote not being "mirror mirror on the wall", the Monopoly man never wearing a monocle, and Pikachu from Pokemon never having a black tip at the end of his tail, so I guess I've had a load of these Mandela-effect-typed memories too! I just cant get my head around me being wrong either, cos I can picture it all so clearly!

Some people are wrong about a lot of things... some of those are very easily explained away. I remember there being talk of Mother Theresa being given a sainthood while she was alive too, it doesn't mean she was that was just when the discussion began about it across the world.
There was a report released in relation to Tiananmen sq recently, he was ran over, many people were... :(

Mispronunciations aren't false memories either, if your parents read a story say about karren the cat and your friend has the same book but your mum pronounces it 'car''ren' and hers 'ka' 'ren' yours isn't a false memory is it?
It's a similar concept.

I have only had one such experience, and that's with smarties... are orange smarties orange chocolate? some say yes and some no the makers say no.

BUT THEY ARE LYING!

I still don't see it as a 'false memory' you just got something wrong and so did some other people :/

'Challenger exploded in 86, oh, I thought it was 84? yep so did I ...no, it was 86, oh. ok'

But Challenger did launch three times in 84, maybe the memories were of one of these launches?

My one is ****ing "Tom Toms", the ketchup-filled chicken nuggets that got banned because the filling got so hot and spurted out at people. I remember them clearly, and remember the advert for them clearly, but pretty much no one else except my sister remembers them... and google knows nothing about them either. But I'm sure I brought this up a couple of years ago, and someone else remembered them too :joker:.

I mean, its more of a phenomenom, that several thousand people share the same false memory of something. Like people dont incorrectly remember the monopoly guy wearing a yellow suit, but several thousand remember him wearing a monocle.. why?

I think it means an actual vivid memory you have of something, that even after discovering it's false you can't believe it as you remember differently.

Like us going to a party 2 years ago and I vividly remember you wearing a blue dress. I saw it and I remember it. Then you show me a photo and you were actually wearing a white dress. False memory. :smug:

No they were real! We had them at my gran's house loads of times over the space of a couple of years, AND I remember the advert (it was a racially questionable thing with a tribe sitting round a fire chanting "Tom-Toms ... Tom-Toms... Tom-Toms... Tom-toms Tom-toms TOM-TOMS-TOM-TOMS" faster and faster.)

Plus no one could have dreamt the horrible burns caused by steaming hot ketchup bursting out of a small ball of processed chicken.

Well yes but it's not a false memory it's just a memory of seeing the fan art wouldn't it.

I thought false memories were more personal, like people who remember being abused but weren't :/

No I doubt many people are vividly remembering fan art from their childhood and throughout their life.

False memories and the mandela effect are a bit different though, the OP brought up both, I think most of the thread has been people talking about different things to each other haha.
