Surprised I couldn’t find a thread about this already.

This Republican rep for Florida has basically just said that passing a law banning the right to bear arms because the Florida shooting survivors are calling for it iis the equivalent to passing a law banning homework.

Sorry but as someone who works in education, I was so annoyed to hear this and I’ve seen it retweeted heaps of times on twitter these last few days :fist:

Thoughts on this?

Personally I don't believe in Homework as the Teachers should be good enough to keep their children entertained and educated, but I can understand the debate there.

I honestly don't get the debate with Gun Laws, allowing a lunatic with a criminal record to be able to go into their local Gun store and buy a Gun without much regulation is not just insane, but is basically the American Government encouraging innocent civilians to get shot to death. If they really care about their people they would regulate who can own a Gun or not, and certainly not compare to something as trivial as Homework.

The law is that folks with felonies and domestic violence convictions aren't legally allowed to own a gun. The agencies are not reporting to the ATF database, which is what all background checks run through. For example, the Air Force didn't report the convictions relating to the Sutherland Springs shooter. I'm not sure what the rationale is behind the debate... in the case of most shootings, there are major failures in terms of applying laws on the books, much less with reporting to the database, so the solution is probably to apply the laws that we already have and to pass red flag laws that would give the courts ability to allow law enforcement to remove the weapons from their home should there be a reason to with evidence presented by family, friends or others (even a simple suicide attempt)

Air Force admits it failed to send Sutherland Springs gunman’s records to feds

..surely all the ‘kids’ are saying though is that you didn’t keep us safe did you with your ‘adult laws’ on gun control...your laws contributed to our deaths...so now she’s saying, well hang on...we make the rules because ‘kids’ don’t dictate these things...even though our ‘rules’ haven’t worked, you haven’t been safe...if she wants to equate it to homework policies etc and trivialise it...then it’s the kids..(..the ones who are ‘at risk’...)...who would be rightfully saying...well we did all of the homework within your rules and we still failed our exams...so let’s try this another way so we can all ensure passes next time...the ‘kids are telling you to’...because the kids are the ones who not being kept safe and not feeling safe...so yes, listen to them you silly lady...
