It's been a while since this was announced but we're finally getting some more information so I figured it's worth having a thread to add more as it comes.
Jack Thorne will helm the series and he seems pretty intent on adapting it faithfully so hopefully this won't run into the same problems as the Golden Compass movie with certain themes being watered down
Dafne Keen has been cast to play the lead role of Lyra and Lin-Manuel Miranda is apparently to play Lee Scoresby, and Tom Hooper will be directing.
Also, the first series will have 8 episodes adapting Northern Lights (looks like some people thought it was 8 episodes for the entire trilogy which thankfully is untrue)

I loved Northern Lights (and I'm a few chapters into The Subtle Knife atm and it's off to a good start) so if this is done well it could be a great show. It's good that HDM is getting another chance for a screen adaptation after the way the movie flopped.

Is it a co-production with a US studio? Lin-Manuel Miranda is quite a big signing for a BBC show.

I've not heard of either of those performers, but a quick google of each seems promising!
I love the books, so I hope this is a good adaption! I didn't even mind the movie adaption tbh.

Yeah it's being produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema. Whether Lin-Manuel Miranda has actually joined or is merely in negotiations seems to vary depending on the report atm.
I can't wait to see who's playing Mrs Coulter tbh.

I watched it when it was in cinemas (just over a decade ago now ) and liked it but I hadn't read the book at that point but I've always been aware that the movie apparently sanitised the more anti religious subject matter. Since I've now read Northern Lights I need to rewatch so I can compare it properly, but I already know I'll be annoyed by them completely cutting off the book's ending just because they wanted to save it to open the sequel that never happened.

He's not actually part of Bad Wolf is he? It was founded by Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner.

Clarke Peters, Ruth Wilson and James McAvoy cast as the Jordan College Master, Mrs Coulter and Lord Asriel!
Interesting choice for Asriel, not how I picture him but a great name to have attached to the cast and I've always liked him so I'm intrigued so see his portrayal.
I've been waiting for Mrs Coulter's casting since she's such a brilliant character. Not too familiar with Ruth Wilson but I can definitely see her as Coulter and by all accounts she's a great actress.
And I loved Clarke Peters in Person of Interest so very happy with his casting.

New press release with more casting announcements
Dafne Keen takes on the lead role of Lyra, the young protagonist of the story who lives in Jordan College, Oxford. Placed there at the request of her Uncle, Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) she lives a sheltered life amongst the scholars and college staff while under the watchful protection of The Master (Clarke Peters) and Librarian Scholar Charles (Ian Gelder).
When the glamorous and mesmeric Mrs Coulter (Ruth Wilson) enters Lyra’s life she embarks upon a dangerous journey of discovery from Oxford to London. Here she meets Father MacPhail (Will Keen), Lord Boreal (Ariyon Bakare) and journalist Adele Starminster (Georgina Campbell) at a glittering society party where she first hears about the sinister General Oblation Board.
Lyra is subsequently thrown into the nomadic world of the boat dwelling Gyptians - Ma Costa (Anne-Marie Duff), Farder Coram (James Cosmo), John Faa (Lucian Msamati), Raymond Van Geritt (Mat Fraser), Jack Verhoeven (Geoff Bell) and Benjamin de Ruyter (Simon Manyonda) who take her North in her quest.
Once in the North she meets charismatic aeronaut and adventurer Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda) who joins them on their epic journey and who becomes one of Lyra’s closest allies.
Talented young actors joining the cast include Lewin Lloyd as Roger Parslow, Daniel Frogson as Tony Costa, Tyler Howitt as Billy Costa and Archie Barnes as Pantalaimon.

Same, can't wait to get a look at the daemons and panserbjorne.
I don't recall the Master of Jordan College being that prominent in Northern Lights beyond trying to kill Lord Asriel / giving Lyra the alethiometer so I'm wondering if they've expanded his role given Clarke Peters apparently being one of the top billed cast members.

Maybe it's just because of how popular Three Billboards was, so they're playing him up for the trailers?
I guess it also depends on how the story is paced - if Lyra is still in Jordan/Oxford for two or three episodes, he might just be "around" ?

I think it did :joker: to be fair the animated version of Lord of the Rings changed Saruman to Aruman, so he wouldn't be confused with Sauron. But that makes more sense, as they are both talked about more than to, and when someone's being referred to with a similar name, I guess it could be easier to get confused. Whereas Iorek and Iofur are pretty much only namechecked once we've met them, so heyho

One thing which the film did really well was the way the daemon's transformed and the transition of the dust particles when they did. In this it seems like in one scene Pan is a ferret and then in another scene he's something else.
Can I make a polite request that anybody who’s read the books says the stuff that hasn’t been in the tv series in spoilers? I’d love to remain completely unspoiled as this goes on.

Loooved episode 2!
I have to say I love how they're expanding on certain elements and characters from the books while still remaining faithful to the core story. They're striking the perfect balance between staying true but also providing new things for book readers. I'm enjoying the increased presence of Boreal, MacPhail, Roger and the Master and how seamlessly the extra content fits into the established events of Northern Lights.
The golden monkey attacking Pan was as uncomfortable to watch as I hoped it would be. And Ruth's Mrs Coulter is still blowing me away. So so perfect.

I was initially slightly disappointed when they revealed Grumman = John Parry already. I was mindblown when I got to that in the books and was looking forward to viewers who haven't read them reacting to the reveal. But that said, introducing John and Will Parry early (if not physically) is a really cool way to adapt the story and build up future storylines. The way they've expanded on the characters from the books has been one of my favourite things about this adaptation.
My favourite scene from the episode has to be Mrs Coulter and her daemon's synchronised attack on Benjamin and his demon / his suicide and that striking image of his daemon evaporating in front of the monkey. So cool all round.

As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're ****ing dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little ****. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your ****ing tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will **** fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're ****ing dead, kiddo
Quick question, why is Pan different sizes in different scenes?
It's not that he's different sizes, but rather he can change his form as Lyra is still a young child. Daemons only settle into one form when their human reaches adolescence.

Loved the latest episode. So good to finally see Iorek, Lee, Hester and Kaisa. Can't wait for Serafina to arrive now :clap1: The panserbjorne look so good, these production values are cinematic :flutter:
The scene of Lyra and Pan watching the northern lights  I love anything wintry and Arctic based so I'm glad we've reached the heavily North based portion of the book now
I feel so sad for the golden monkey :( Although Mrs Coulter's cruelty towards him (which I don't remember being in the books?) is a great way to illustrate her self loathing and flesh her out even more.
I have a feeling episode is gonna be a particularly good one. It's called The Lost Boy which is the chapter of the book where Lyra finds Tony Makarios after he's been severed from his daemon and dies. The show has given Billy Costa's daemon the same name as Tony's in the book and he hasn't appeared himself so I'm guessing Billy will die next week
(book spoilers in the tags)

Well last episode was devastating as I expected! Anne Marie Duff was phenomenal in Billy's death scene :worship: There's a fair bit of anger over the omission of him clutching a dead fish in place of his missing daemon and as much as I wish they included that, I thought the episode was still brilliant.
Really surprised by the official introduction of Will  I wasn't massively interested in his scenes this episode just because the main storyline was so engrossing but I'm really intrigued by his early introduction. It works well too because what we see with him and his mother would have been happening while Northern Lights was taking place anyway.
Serafina finally arriving too :worship: She was great. Not 100% on them giving her short hair but the rest of her character design and Ruta's portrayal were perfect.
Bolvangar at the end was suitably sinister, can't wait to see more of it tonight.

Also I'd have no idea David Suchet voices Kaisa if I didn't already know. He's such a bloody versatile actor

So I've been neglecting posting about this for the last few episodes since I've been so awol but the finale was phenomenal  Genuinely one of my favourite episodes of TV I've ever seen.
Where they might not have reached the full potential of certain big scenes from the book over the course of the season, Roger and Salcilia's deaths actually managed to be worse (in a good way) in the TV series. Even though I knew it was coming that scene still managed to genuinely disturb me. Salcilia's "Roger, I don't want to leave you" hit me especially hard.
But the whole episode was just brilliant. The character work, the emotion, the gorgeous visuals, everything. :worship: Oh and Dafne Keen was so so good in her last scene!

Yeah the whole show was great. I liked that Will was introduced in the first season, I guess his storyline was happening more or less in sync with Lyra's, and them crossing over to Citt at about the same time makes sense.

So I'm loving season 2. Mary communicating with the angels last week gave me chills.
Pretty sure the voice in that scene was Sophie Okonedo as Xaphania, who also did the opening narration for this episode and the season opener. Continuing the tradition of introducing certain characters earlier than the books did, one of my favourite things about this adaptation.
