British pub chain JD Wetherspoon has deleted all of its social media profiles, with chairman Tim Martin citing the "current bad publicity surrounding social media, including the trolling of MPs and others" as one of the reasons behind the move.
He added that recent concerns regarding the misuse of personal data following the Facebook scandal and the addictive nature of social media, had influenced its decision.
The outspoken pub boss said he did not believe that closing down the Twitter and Facebook accounts, which had 44,000 and 100,000 followers, respectively, would have any affect on the business "whatsoever".

Good for Spoons and i think more companies will follow
pointless non-core activity
Given his vocal Brexit stance, Tim Martin wanting his company to go back to the Dark Ages isn't a massive surprise

Yeah but he has the wrong opinion about a country's involvement in a trade agreement, so he's obviously nasty and evil.

He's an idiot if he doesn't think ignoring Social Media won't affect his business. Most companies don't create profiles on those sites for funsies, they do it because they have a proven positive affect on businesses when used well.
He just sounds like a remnant of a bygone era screaming at the tide of change and expecting it to stop.
it's a business decision, who honestly gives a fig. A pub chain as a business doesn't need social media to succeed.

"It's becoming increasingly obvious that people spend too much time on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, and struggle to control the compulsion.
Thank goodness Wetherspoon don't provide anything which causes people to waste time, and may struggle to control their need for.

Surely they will be out of pocket? People are not gonna pop in each morning to see if they have any special offers

Cheap booze, horsemeat and tattered carpets is all weatherspoons needs

Aren't there usually boards outside? Anyway, it's not like anything there is particularly expensive; if I went in there thinking there was a deal on chilli nachos and beer, but it was actually tomorrow and full price today, I wouldn't be too out of pocket. Either way the drinks and their cooking would give me a hangover and dire rear.

I doubt social media helps businesses like Wetherspoon very much, or at all.

My guess is they've had more negative than positive feedback via social media.

Wetherspoons = accepting a copy n paste atmosphere in exchange for cheaper drinks. That's all the advertising they have ever needed or will ever need... They're always going to be relatively busy because people will always go there to load up on cheap doubles before heading on to the nicer bars that charge £8 for the same thing

Exactly they don't need to bother with social media, it doesn't matter if it is positive or negative
although they will continue to use the app where you can order food and drinks from your table.

Basically this, a business that doesn't promote themselves on the Internet (especially on Social Media) will find it harder to get their name out to the general public nowadays as people will just go with the latest trends off Social Media.

Yeah, everyone I knew discovered Wetherspoons when its cheap food was trending on Twitter.
