I'm intrigued but they're calling Venom an anti-hero... He's not! Deadpool is an anti-hero, Venom was a straight up villain.

It's not the CGI I'm worried about, it's the plot.
Venom has forever and always been a pure villain and they're trying to make him out as being an "anti-hero" here. Not gonna end well.

Looks more interesting to me than the Thor/Iron Man stuff which hasn't interested me in ages.

Venom's been an anti-hero since the 90's.
It looks okay, I don't like Tom Hardy though.

The fact that not a single review has been released for the film doesn't fill me with hope either.
The anti-hero genre is so much more interesting than the hero genre and im gonna be annoyed if this ends up being shiy

Sony needs to extend the deal it has with Marvel to all of the Sony owned characters. It's looking like they don't know what they are doing. The whole 'dated' rationality just shows that they haven't learned from Amazing Spiderman 2 which felt like it was pulled out of the 90's.
Let Marvel handle the creative side and just co-produce the films, that's what Sony needs to do.

Maybe Sony wants their movies to do well on their own merit without resorting to underhand tactics like Warner Bros (a company which is now part owner of Rotten Tomatoes).

Well you’d think a film with such a large budget they’d want to guarantee a return, if it was a smaller budget it wouldn’t really matter I suppose  guess buying reviews is just a stupid rumour!
Not really sure what Warner Bros has to do with this :conf2: nor what them being an owner implies, reviews are submitted by independent reviewers to RT, RT is just like MC where numerous reviews are noted :conf2:

What is any of this based off apart from your hatred of Lady Gaga?
Rotten Tomatoes gathers critical reviews from other places and delivers a percentage based on the review scores, it's not really something that can be abused unless you're trying to make out that Warner Bros (but let's be real, you're referring to Lady Gaga here) somehow has bought reviews from pretty much every professional reviewer out there that has given ASIB a good review?
As I said before, very few people care about audience scores since they won't affect whether someone chooses to see a film so Venom or Gaga fans trashing each others' films doesn't really matter.
It's fine to hate something but when you're spinning obsessive stories to discredit it then that's when things get worrying.

Someone in DS has just posted a review:

"Just seen Venom...
And actually, it was far better than I thought it would be. It probably helped that it was only 90 minutes long and in these days of 2hr superhero opus', its brevity was welcome.
Main thoughts.. The film move pretty swiftly, from Brock's downfall to (kind of) redemption when he's consumed by the "parasite", and it's these internalised conversations between Eddie and Venom that are the film's strong points. On the action front, there are two main set pieces; the street chase scene and a confrontation with a SWAT team, which features some great visual flourishes (smokes & lighting used to good effect).
The plot is serviceable enough with clearly drawn good / bad guys and, a narrative suggesting a bigger threat than Venom was at stake. Riz Ahmed as the chief baddie was fine, I had no real issues with him. More out of place was Michelle Williams as Brock's love interest. There is violence, but most of this is off screen or too quick to register. A 15 certificate is appropriate.
The end smack-down was similar to the CGI slugfest seen in The Incredible Hulk (Ed Norton), but thankfully there was better stuff beforehand, so I could forgive this oft seen climax. The obligatory (read) annoying appearance of Stan Lee elicited the usual groan from me (takes you out of the movie. Give it up already Stan!), but overall I quite enjoyed this version of Venom. If anything, at least it should bury the abdominal take on the character from Spider-Man 3.
Though I was initially annoyed with Hardy's affected, rasping voice, I gave in and just went with it. Given his "loser" status, it seemed a decent enough fit. With the mid-credit scene, a sequel seems on the cards and I don't think I'd mind this.
Whilst it's no classic Spider-Man 2, Venom is nowhere near as bad as the likes of Fant4Stic or The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Rating - 4/5. Definitely worth a watch."

Bad news that it’s PG13.. was hoping it would really be gruesome.
It's rated 15 in the UK. Usually US PG13 gets 12A.
VENOM is a US sci-fi action fantasy in which alien organisms are brought back to Earth.
Threat
There are a number of sequences in which people are threatened and attacked by the alien organisms, or by people into whose bodies the aliens have entered.
Horror sequences include the alien organisms entering people's bodies, causing their limbs to distort and their bones to crack. There is sight of injury detail, including protruding bones.
Violence
Stronger moments of violence include people being impaled by the alien organisms, sometimes with bloody detail, and people being eaten by the aliens. There is also moderate action violence throughout, including heavy punches, kicks and other blows as well as use of tasers.
There is also infrequent strong language ('******'), alongside milder bad language (eg 'pussy', '****'). There are sequences in which live animals appear to be eaten but no animals were harmed in the making of the film.

https://comicbook.com/marvel/2018/10/06/venom-opening-weekend-box-office/
Venom is headed for a record-breaking opening weekend win at the box office.
Venom is projected to earn approximately $80 million in its opening weekend at the box office following a record-breaking preview night. A Star Is Born, the Lady Gaga film that fans on the internet turned into a nemesis for Venom, will come in second with about $45 million in its opening weekend.
Both films are blowing past initial projections. Those projections had Venom pegged for $60 million tops. Venom will easily become the biggest October box office opening of all time, flying past previous record-holder Gravity, which opened to $55.8 million in 2013.
Venom stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, the journalist who bonds to an alien symbiote to become the Spider-Man villain and then antihero called Venom. Tough Venom’s origin is tied tightly to Spidey in the Marvel Comics universe, Sony is using Venom as a launchpad for its own universe of films focused on Spider-Man supporting characters such as Morbius, Black Cat, Silver Sable, and Nightwatch.
Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and was made with a $100 million budget.
Venom has received mostly negative reviews from critics, managing only a 32 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, but fans have been much more positive on the film, awarding it an 88 percent audience score.

It's fairly easy to get a big opening as a superhero film, the real test will be whether it can hold on to that audience in the next frame. Being a flash in the pan doesn't mean much.

Seen this tonight, thought the first half was piss but the second half was very good so I give this an overall rating of ALRIGHT, I'd watch a sequel
Nancy.
08-10-2018, 02:43 PM
Saw it yesterday and quite enjoyed it. It does drag in certain parts, but as a whole it's a fun little action flick - and one's that's quite humourous too. The chase/ fight scenes with Riot were brill. Tom Hardy was amazing as usual.
Of course it isn't the best Marvel movie, but at the same time it's not awful like the "critics" would have you believe. Either see it or don't. It's up to you.
Tom4784
08-10-2018, 03:05 PM
I've come back from seeing it. It was okay, a solid 6/10.
The inevitable second film has potential to be great but this one is all over the place. The first half is trash and badly written and the second part is more enjoyable but the film doesn't know what it wants to be. It's part body horror, part sci-fi, part superhero film, part buddy cop film and it's just okay in all it's forms.
Feels a bit dated too, it felt like a film that should have come out 10 years ago.
It also feels kinda toothless too, they really should have pursued an R-rating in America since it would have given the film free reign to be the film it wanted to be. I hope they are smart enough to do that in the sequel as you can't really do Carnage justice without the violence.

How are the effects? I was watching Spiderman: Homecoming again earlier and noted (as I did in the cinema) that the Sony effects are noticeably different (and inferior) to DisneyMarvel effects. It's especially glaring in the scenes with Iron Man, I guess because we're very familiar with Iron Man in the MCU, but I also noticed it with Spidey himself this time - I guess after having seen him more extensively under Disney in Infinity War. The CGI for him is just a bit... unnatural / not human seeming?
