Misery
IT (2017)
Stand By Me
Not only are these the best adaptations... they're pretty much the only good adaptations full stop :joker:.
The Shining is a good movie in its own right but it doesn't capture the book at all. So I struggle to call it an adaptation.
The Stand TV movie is good for what it is but the production is cheap as chips and it's dated badly, and also, it's my favourite King novel and it's so packed full of material that it would take a several-full-seasons-long TV series to actually do it justice. There's a season's worth of material for practically every character in the book... and there are a tonne of characters. I don't think a "great" adaptation CAN be done... it would need a huge commitment and a decent budget.
I personally also have a soft spot for the TV adaptation of IT, as I think there are several aspects it does far better than the new movie. Not least... for most of the running time, IT is a sinister and creepy background presence, far more subtle than in the movie, which goes for a few too many "jump" and "chase" scares. For example, the giant head bursting out of the projector images is NOWHERE NEAR as effective as the same scene in the TV adaptation (they're looking at still pictures and suddenly notice that Pennywise is moving in the pictures and looking at them). Again though, suffers from dated production values, where movies like Green Mile, Shawshank and Stand By Me are timeless.
Most of the other movies haven't aged well to the point of being bad, or just weren't good to begin with.
Jason.

Salems Lot was the first horror I ever saw and traumatised me......especially as my brother climbed out of his bedroom to scratch on my window after we watched it.
The Green Mile sticks closest to the book.
Carrie (original) was a great movie.
Shawshank
Misery, great film although some.differences to the book namely the hobbling scene

The TV adaptation of The Shining is brilliant. It's much more true to the book than the movie.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shining_(miniseries)
It is a much better adaptation and closer to the book, and nails the Jack character unlike... well... Jack. Again though it suffers from the basic problem of being "pre-2000's TV" - that is to say, TV shows just didn't get the sort of budget (and therefore production and acting quality) that they do today.

Love OG Carrie, it's just so messed up it's brilliant.
Carrie the remake wasn't bad either, again much truer to the book (where she wreaks havoc all the way home and basically sets the whole town on fire).

:omgno: The Green Mile is a brilliant film. Kirk is right; Green Mile and Shawshank both easily transcend the rating of "Great Stephen King film" into just straight up "great film".
I do also love how all of his works are interconnected, e.g. the concept of the "Shine", which both father and son have in The Shining (obviously) but also loads of other characters, like John Cofey (seems to have it more strongly than any other character), Mother Abigail in The Stand (and arguably, most if not all of the plague survivors to varying extent), Stan in IT, etc.

What are your opinions on 1408, Thinner, Carrie, The Mist and Christine?
I've only seen 1408 once, I found it watchable but that's it really. Christine is the same, a fun enough watch but not more. The sorts of films you watch once. Thinner isn't very good, and I'm personally not a huge Carrie fan either...
I haven't actually seen The Mist

Apparently Amazon has picked up The Dark Tower TV show which could be great ***i******* they go in a completely different direction to last year's movie, and do it properly. The Tower is the thing that ties together King's "Universe" and it deserves to be treated well :fist:.

Actually that pretty much sums up the difference between the two IT adaptations :joker:.
And it's a shame because the kid actors are actually all great .
Carrie, The Shining and Misery are the trinity.
