Looks like it could be decently watchable, it's Ryan Murphy so you know the first season will be good at least.

If you like this series you should watch the documentary movie "Paris is Burning" (1990) which is basically what this is based on.
Filmed in the mid-to-late 1980s, it chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the African-American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities involved in it. Some critics consider the film to be an invaluable documentary of the end of the "Golden Age" of New York City drag balls, and a thoughtful exploration of race, class, gender, and sexuality in America.

It's on YouTube and is pretty legendary:

Couldn't sleep so watched the last two episodes, amazing. Perfect finish. Very heartwarming.

I'd recommend this to everyone it's just brilliant, has everything. Dramatic, genuinely funny, flamboyant, emotional, extremely heart-wrenching at times and most importantly, extremely thought-provoking. Incredible cast too.

They need to release a soundtrack too because my God the music alone in this series has been awesome!

Season 2 has been confirmed btw.

Finished watching S2 - loved it. Very intrigued to see where S3 is going to go now...

So much change going on...

1. Angel & Papi's business venture, engagement and [hopefully, I presume] their wedding next season.
2. Is Damon going to be in S3 at all? Seemed pretty final to me that he's now leading a house in Paris and a "famous" dancer/choreographer.
3. The return/revenge or actually even "reformation" of Frederica? [Amazing character]
4. I want more Nurse Judy OUTSIDE of the hospital and involvement with Act Up.
5. Who's going to be the first AIDS-related death of the main crew? Blanca, Ricky or Pray? Or are more going to test positive maybe?
6. I want more Lulu in general - a backstory would be nice too. She's kind of the most "outsider" main cast member so more focus on her would be good. She's a funny character.
7. Blanca's new "kids" from the closing scenes - Quincy and Chilly - are they the new focus for the upcoming season?
8. Blanca's new love interest, the lifeguard - will that develop and what impact will her health have on it?
SO many possibilities!

A year and a half later and I'm finally there. Binged the first four episodes, cried over two of them (3/4, the Christmas episode - the red pumps <3 - and the one where the boys get tested)

I must admit I'm a little annoyed at Evan Peters being given top billing when his character is so inconsequential and serves nothing more than to remind this world of what they're being trodden down by. I appreciate his/Angel's relationship story but don't put him and his barely-there wife top of the god damn bill :oh: even if Billy Porter gets all the awards.

Blanca is maybe my favourite character of the past decade if that means anything. Such a warm and layered character. Oh and Dyllon Burnside :flutter:

I got up to the first episode of S2 and I was mildly annoyed by them randomly turning Elektra back into a villain just for a bit of plot shakeup. I know Dominique Jackson plays a villain fantastically but it just completely undid her S1 arc :( typical Murphy nonsense.

Ah well, the rest of it is still great.

Ammi
15-07-2020, 11:55 AM
...I wouldn’t say that she’s turned back, Shaun...she’s Elektra, a totally entitled QUEEN, so her arc is always going to shake at times and be quite bumpy......but that’s part of her charm also, she’s still very much on the arc, I would say...if she looked like she was reviving her full time villainess...?...Blanca would have her back in line with a swift click of her well polished nails...I love their friendship despite how different they are...

Ammi

..oh and another great positive with series 2...?...no Stan and whatshername, his wife...

Shaun
15-07-2020, 12:17 PM
:joker: yeah that's definitely a positive

I don't know, it sort of blindsided me and considering everything that happened between Blanca/Elektra in S1 - the transition, the constant affirmation of being her only mother / only daughter etc - it just felt unrealistic that she would snap and become a sworn enemy of her House because she wanted a nicer apartment.

Like I'm sure there'll be another redemption somewhere down the S2 line but as a start-off point it felt like a big "... ok ignore her becoming rounded and rootable at the end of the first season" disclaimer

Ammi
15-07-2020, 12:46 PM
...awwww, I think Elektra more than any other character fits that Hector Xtravaganza quote from the series, so well.../well her whole relationship with Blanca....

“Blood does not family make. Those are relatives. Family are those with whom you share your good, bad, and ugly, and still love one another in the end. Those are the ones you select.”

...Elektra so gloriously is the good, the bad and the ugly......but she’s never going to leave that arc because she’s essentially a good person, who needs her family...maybe more than anyone else does...she’s never going to be Miss Congeniality or that Dairy Queen......but she’s extremely lovable and always more good than bad/ugly and that always shines through...:flutter:..

Shaun
15-07-2020, 12:56 PM
Yeah I get that, and I know the community was, under all of the shade and the barbs, united... but considering in S1 she was chastised for not attending Act-Up protests and didn't really open up to anyone but Blanca, it still felt inorganic for her to react so violently and lash out. But then I suppose, given her circumstances, newly transitioned, abandoned by her boyfriend, everyone around her being fickle friends (those 2 gays who seem to switch houses every week :joker:) it was natural to lash out.

I suppose without much historical knowledge of the houses and what they really got up to (this is all obviously a Hollywood reimagining of the scene, and glossing over some dubious shenanigans - although I believe S2 does touch on a plot point that is infamous in the Ball scene with Dorian Corey's mummified body) it's all hard to understand what was familial and sorority, and what was "you're in a different house than me? you're ugly and cheap"

Ammi
16-07-2020, 06:59 AM
...I finished series 2 last night and have loved both series from the very top to the very toe......it’s funny with Elektra because it’s Blanca who is always portrayed as ‘the heart’...but I really think that she had very deep feelings for her guy...because she’s Elektra, she could have never loved someone who wasn’t rich, obviously.....and who couldn’t give her the luxury that she so desired but I still think she felt love also because she too has heart and loved him for who he was as well as what he gave in material ways...?...Whereas it became brutally obvious that he didn’t feel that depth with her, or indeed any depth at all...her genitalia was all there was, it was everything to him...Elektra as a person didn’t exist to him so I think the impact on her was huge with the reality and when he rejected her because becoming a woman was so much a part of who she was and who she needed him to see also...but in that community, so many were either loved or loathed, simply because of genitalia...

...anyways, in a time when we’re not able to express and demonstrate and celebrate family and friends in the same way as we’ve known all of our lives...when there have been so many restrictions...when illness and death has been so lonely for so many with no one to hold a hand...?..this has just been lovely and very meaningful for me...a 10/10 series.....

Yeah he's great.

I will say my one main gripe with the show - and it's not his fault, and I don't want to discredit his performance - is that it's a pretty cruel ****ing irony that in a show about the ball scene, and predominantly created and centred around trans women, absolutely none of the trans actors are regularly submitted or even nominated for major awards (I'm sure MJ Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson, etc. have won smaller awards, but I'm talking the Emmys and Golden Globes here).

Because whilst I'm moved by Porter at times, I think the star of the show is MJ Rodriguez, hands down. Greatness from Indya Moore, Dominique, Angelica Ross, and guest appearances like Peppermint and Trace Lysette, as well)

Ammi

...it strange, someone just mentioned Pose on my wall...that they missed it...it really is a series that has the characters become such a part of you that there should be a category is therapy group to get you through the first few days...it’s so uplifting because of the sense of family but obviously, heartbreaking as well because of the time it’s set in and the rejections the characters have gone through and continue to go through in their lives...this with Big Little Lies would have some of my all time favourite characters in them...I love Pray Tell and I absolutely adore Blanca and Elektra, they’re so totally different...and yet, somehow they’re not so different , either...I feel envious, Jake...that you’re watching this for the first time...the journey is emotional but it’s also beautiful, filled with the most incredible people.....

I just finished the penultimate episode of S2 and it definitely follows the typical Ryan Murphy tropes at times

That scene between Blanca and Frederica in the nail salon could have been pulled straight out of The Politician or AHS Coven

Still love it though

Shaun
26-01-2021, 03:25 AM
I last watched the episode where Frederica randomly turns on Blanca and boards up the salon just after spending time at her AIDS cabaret and it's just... why? It doesn't make any sense, other than "we've paid Patti LuPone to sing, ****, just hope they don't notice her lack of character direction". Such a poor addition to the cast, similar to how that blond AHS twink and his marriage was irrelevant and irritating during S1.

I can understand the "business discrimination" angle for a plotline, but to just dangle it to a celebrity cameo that doesn't really sell the role well in amongst her random theatricality is just Murphyism at its finest.

LaLaLand
26-01-2021, 05:31 AM
IIRC Frederica is basically just a nod to Leona Helmsley, or “The Queen of Mean” as she was known.

Ah really! So that's a 3 year jump from the end of S2 (May '91)... Worried. :bawling:

How many are HIV+ at the end of S2?

Blanca (has progressed to AIDS), Pray and Ricky..? Have I missed anyone?

Smithy
05-02-2021, 05:21 PM
Right I’m posting blind in her and not reading anything yall have said bc I’ve only just finished S1

I loved everything about it, it was funny, heartwarming, touching, emotional, incredible, amazing, never been done before etc etc

BUT my one issue with the show is that, the actress for Electra... just isn’t very good? When she’s being fierce she’s perfect, but did anyone else just find that when she had emotional scenes, like in the hospital with Blanca, or when she was apologising to her children, it’s just came across as really wooden? :(

Shaun
05-02-2021, 07:04 PM
I think it's more the character than anything else, she's uncomfortable with displaying emotion and is incredibly cold and distant (because of the rejection she's experienced, presumably).

She has some great scenes and displays a lot of emotional versatility in S2... I can't remember her being particularly wooden in S1 but I do remember finding the character bizarre at times in her motivations (complete changes of mood and pleasantry in relationships with Blanca, other characters)

Ammi
06-02-2021, 03:31 PM
...yeah as Shaun said, I would say that Dominique played Elektra’s character to be someone who has very guarded and uneasy emotions due to past life and past hurts...I read that she suffered depression when she was playing Elektra because of Elektra’s ‘fierceness’ ....and worried that she might be much hated/seen as that fierce person herself /confused with the character...

...although I completely adore Blanca, Elektra for me is probably the most complicated one because of her extreme vulnerabilities as well...that determination and need to be her true self, regardless of any personal cost...and not because of her lifestyle etc...but because she obviously did invest huge emotions as well and in reality was often quite hopeless in revealing and laying open those emotions...

Smithy
28-02-2021, 07:15 PM
Just finished S2, I think Electra was a lot better but I also think she played less of a part and her storylines were almost the comedic relief of the season - I SCREAMED when she yelped at the graduation party when Damen and Pray were arguing

Also BAWLED for like 90% of Candy’s funeral, I wasn’t *that* keen on her character beforehand, but her talking to everyone saying she was free etc just had me sobbing :bawling:

Very happy that Blanca didn’t die in the finale, at the start of the ep I thought that was what was going to happen :worry:

aUmUQeucVgI

Set to the tune of Aretha Franklin’s “A Deeper Love”, the season 3 trailer gives fans an exciting glimpse of what’s to come – including a possible wedding for Papi (Angel Bismark Curiel) and Angel (Indya Moore).

The third season jumps ahead to 1994, with Blanca (Mj Rodriguez) reflecting on the incredible progress her family has made over the years.

Meanwhile Pray Tell (played by Billy Porter) is looking towards an uncertain future and reflecting on his legacy as he grapples with HIV.

“I knew this disease would eat me alive, but I’m not going out without a fight,” he vows.

With the AIDS crisis intensifying, Blanca is now working shifts as a nurse in a hospital – but that doesn’t mean she’s left the ballroom behind.

“It’s about our legacy,” she declares while sat around a table, trying to convince her family to return to the ballroom scene. “We rose from the bottom and we became stars. When we walk together we make a statement.”
