Bradley Cooper’s Triumphant A Star is Born is an Instant Classic
Occasionally you see a movie and immediately know it's up there with the all-time greats. Now is one of those rare times.

It’s one of those rare movies that grabs you from the opening shot and then just gets better and better with each passing scene; within the first few minutes, you know you’re in the hands of a born filmmaker and can just sit back with the trust that your faith will be rewarded – which it is, many times over.

The result is a film with the breadth of an epic ensemble piece and the intimacy and undiluted emotional impact of a character study by Bergman or Cassavetes. And it’s not just a movie of multiple points of view – it’s a movie of multiple subjects and even multiple styles and genres, all of which are kept in perfect tonal balance by Cooper.

The undeniable standout is Lady Gaga, whose performance here goes far beyond what we typically think of as great acting and moves into the territory of, say, Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence. The role requires her to play every note on the emotional scale from the depths of despair to the joyous exuberance, and Gaga is flawless in every scene. Her work proves the cliché about the specific becoming universal, as she plays each moment in surprising, unique ways and makes bold choices no other actress would conceive of, yet gives each of those moments a profound and affecting sense of recognition for the audience – every triumph and every heartbreak feels utterly honest and relatable, and it all builds to one of the most emotionally shattering finales I’ve ever encountered in a movie.

Poor Bradley Cooper he can do better.

I'm not suprised she has moved to acting after her music career has gone south though.

Lets be real she was awful in Hotel and the stars of that series were Dennis O'Hare and Kathy Bares. Lady GaGa was awful and clearly won just because she was a pop star. She was shockingly bad and her seasons were cringey.

Nominations /wins mean very little.. I mean Adina Poter has been nominatted for an Emmy. out of all the AHS cast.. she can't act for **** and don't try and justify that she can [I have liked her characters but they're all one note] :eyes:

I think Bradley Cooper is great though, shame about the leading female though. Zendaya / Amanda Seyfried would have been great choices and would have propelled the film so much further. They'd probably cost more though.

ahhhh so after the premiere this evening the film has been met with RAVE reviews

The Guardian, 5 out of 5 stars:
Cooper directs and co-stars in this outrageously watchable and colossally enjoyable new version, supercharged with dilithium crystals of pure melodrama. He appears opposite a sensationally good Lady Gaga, whose ability to be part ordinary person, part extraterrestrial celebrity empress functions at the highest level at all times.—Peter Bradshaw https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/aug/31/a-star-is-born-review-lady-gaga-bradley-cooper

The Telegraph, 5 out of 5 stars:
Gaga's big final number, performed almost entirely in a single-take close-up, gives the film the knee-weakening send-off it earns. This is a musical for lovers and loathers of the genre alike: deluxe studio entertainment like they used to make.—Robbie Collin https://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/0/star-born-review-lady-gaga-electrifies-hollywood-musical-ages/

Variety, positive:
Lady Gaga, in her fetching and accomplished movie-star debut, as Ally, an ingenuous, fresh-faced singer-songwriter who becomes his lover and stage partner before rocketing on her own into the new pop stratosphere. Cooper directed the movie himself, working from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Will Fetters, and to say that he does a good job would be to understate his accomplishment.—Owen Gleiberman https://variety.com/2018/film/reviews/a-star-is-born-review-lady-gaga-bradley-cooper-1202922858/

The Wrap, positive:
Cooper and Lady Gaga are dynamite together; this is a story that lives and dies by the central relationship and the instant chemistry that must blossom between them, and these two have it in spades. The musical numbers take immediately catchy songs and present them in an electrifying way.—Alonso Duralde https://www.thewrap.com/a-star-is-born-film-review-bradley-cooper-lady-gaga-2018/

TIME, positive:
A Star Is Born is just on the right side of tasteful, which is to say it’s slightly on the wrong side: It could stand to be more nutso in its expression of grand human emotions and dismal human failures. But it works anyway: You come away feeling something for these people, flawed individuals who are trying to hold their cracked pieces of self together—or to mend the cracks of those they love.—Stephanie Zacharek http://time.com/5382763/a-star-is-born-review/

US Weekly, 3 out of 4 stars:
A Star Is Born tries very, very hard to be the most emotional movie of 2018. I’m not convinced it wins on that front, but I can say it gets the prize for most hysterical melodrama. Take it as a compliment.—Mara Reinstein https://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/lady-gaga-dazzles-in-a-star-is-born-early-review/

Entertainment Weekly, B+:
Gaga's serious-actress transformation for her first major film role will undoubtedly lead the conversation, and she deserves praise for her restrained, human-scale performance as a singer whose real-girl vulnerability feels miles away from the glittery meat-dress delirium of her own stage persona.—Leah Greenblatt https://ew.com/movies/2018/08/31/a-star-is-born-review/

I personally haven’t seen any promotion for the BR, ASIB has Oscar buzz whereas I haven’t seen anything in terms of predictions for BR either  https://awardswatch.com/2018/08/31/frontrunner-friday-venice-and-telluride-give-us-glimpses-of-oscar-gold-favourite-first-man-roma-destroyer-star-is-born-boy-erased/ the only thing mentioned is Rami for Leading Male, whereas ASIB has picture, director, actor and actress and it’s pretty much the same on other websites too, there’s no mention of BR, ASIBs opening weekend predictions have now moved to $35million - $55 million and it’s predicted to do $135m domestically, I think if people want to see both films they will anyway but being released first just means word of mouth is gonna have more impact for ASIB anyway

Tom4784
02-09-2018, 09:04 PM
It's a matter of knowing how the Academy works though, ASIB is an old favourite for the academy which will benefit it but I dunno, I think BH will end up pipping it in the noms in the end. It's got crossover appeal whilst dealing with Academy friendly subject matter.

I think the only chance ASIB has is if it really does go the distance in terms of audience popularity but I don't really see that happening, the trailers for both were released at similar times iirc and I think BH generally trended more and got more views. I'm seeing both but I think, looking at both films, BH is going to do better at the awards although I do predict that Gaga will get a fair few noms, judging by the critics reactions to her. I predict she'll have at least a Golden Globe by the time awards' season ends. Potentially an Oscar too but that depends on the other competition.

Smithy
02-09-2018, 09:10 PM
Don’t you mean ANOTHER golden globe :fan:

I mean either way I’d be happy with nominations, I wouldn’t expect her to win an Oscar for her first film, Glen Close is currently fave anyway, but she might snatch one for the soundtrack considering everyone knows she was robbed last time and she has a pretty good relationship with the academy after her previous performances.

Eh as long as the film performs well and is well received (so already halfway there) I’m happy :hee:

It's because of Directors Guild of America rules he gets credited. I think the usual rule is - when a film has multiple directors - that the person who directs more than 50% of the film gets sole credit.

Variety are predicting that ASIB could snatch up to 10 nominations for the films AND potential walk away with the big 5 (Director, Actor, Actress, Picture AND screenplay)

For that and many more reasons (like a field that isn’t as competitive as usual), the lead actor Oscar race might be over and done with. Cooper is that good as the kind-hearted but haunted Jackson Maine, and the screenplay — from Cooper, Will Fetters, and Oscar winner Eric Roth — finely tunes his story, serving the character far better than any previous version of the tale has for Fredric March and James Mason’s Norman Maine, or Kris Kristofferson’s John Norman Howard.

That you can get two paragraphs into spelling out the virtues of this film before even mentioning Lady Gaga is a testament to its density. She is, of course, sensational in her first starring role — an absolute natural. And when her version of the discovered talent, here called Ally, first steps onto a stage early in the film to perform one of her own songs for the first time — already a highlight from its positioning in the trailer alone — I’ve rarely seen so arresting a moment in cinema

So. Yes. “A Star Is Born” (2018) is an across-the-board Oscar contender. More than that, and assuming this is even still possible in the modern era, it has the muscle to achieve what only three films in movie history ever have: Win all five major Academy Awards (picture, director, actor, actress, and screenplay). It’s that kind of accomplishment, and even more, it makes you realize what this well-worn, Oscar-winning material was capable of all along.

And of course, more rave reviews after the film premiered in Toronto earlier this week

Bradley Cooper has that all figured out as he makes his directorial debut directing himself in a highly effective update that he also co-wrote. As the alcoholic country rocker Jackson Maine, he plays a romantic lead for the current era, irresistibly impulsive but also deeply vulnerable and kind of sweet. And his ace-in-the-hole is Lady Gaga proving that behind all those outlandish costumes there is not only a voice but also an actress who can bring real down-home strength to the role of the rising Ally, the singer-songwriter Jack discovers performing La Vie en Rose in a drag bar.

4/4

A remarkably assured directorial debut from Bradley Cooper who turns in a career-defining performance opposite a promising Lady Gaga. A remake that captures the tone and spirit of prior films, A Star Is Born still blazes its own heartfelt, authentic path.

A Star Is Born may be a remake, may even have had a tricky birth, but Cooper and Lady Gaga make the material feel fresh, urgent and full of soul. A film both for the ages and for 2018. And when the final emotional punch is thrown, you’ll be left reeling at the originality and heart on display.
5/5

If you are a human being who worries that you are dead inside, that you may have no emotions left to give, that your soul has been crushed so many times that there’s no way a single tear could be shed in the name of cinema – yet, you’re not exactly sure and you need one final test – then Bradley Cooper’s iteration of A Star is Born (which screened on Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival) is your last litmus test. If you do not cry during this movie, then, yes, you might be dead inside.

A Star is Born is not just the movie you hoped it would be from the dynamic trailer, it’s much better. It’s an expertly shot, phenomenal film that now puts Bradley Cooper on the “elite director” list. Not too shabby for the third lead from Yes Man.

9.5/10

I speak the truth, she has probably paid these reviewers. I have seen with my own eyes that she is a terrible actress. Also many times critics have got things very wrong.

Yep! paid the reviewers, every single one of them I bet! The people who have given her standing ovations at premieres and Q&As probably paid the GP who’ll go and see the film! She’ll probably end up contributing her own wealth to make the gross of the film look bigger than it is too! I imagine she’ll buy he nominations and awards too!!!!

She definelty bought herself into being cast, it wasn't talent that got her the role. She probably showed a bit of leg to the paedo/sexual harassing producers. Some of the producers of this film are terrible and so I'm sure the film will be just as bad

Baiting who? Are you secret a producer of the film or a cast member because I didn't know that?
It's a thread about the film with two of the main actors in the title. I am discussing the film/cast/producers

Also not everything is 'factually incorrect', you can't prove a lot of what I said to not be true.. So what you have posted is actually 'factually incorrect'.

Ok

1. Producers didn’t want to give Gaga the role they said she had to audition like other people FACT
2. Bradley did a screen test at her house for an audition, when producers saw it only then were they comfortable with her being cast. FACT
3. There is no “paedo/sexual harassing paedos” involved in the making of this film as confirmed by the PGA. FACT
4. You don’t know anything about the producers of the film you’re just basing it on what you’ve seen re a producer legally obligated to credit because it’s the remake of this film. FACT
5. Keep posting because you’re only making yourself look more foolish. FACT

Yeah...That doesn't really happen in Hollywood, especially for prestige films like this.

The whole 'showing a bit of leg' line makes very little sense. The producer in question has been confirmed to basically have nothing to do with this film outside of a contractual obligation to appear in the credits. Honestly, do some research before you write such fiction.

I mean Kirsten Stewart had sex with the hollywood producer Rupert Sanders to get a role for 'Snowman and the Huntsman' so it does happen occasionally actually. I suggest you do some research yourself :wavey:

Regardless he is still a producer of the film and is credited and so my point stands with not wanting to watch a film he has had at least any input in.

Well, that just shows that you know very little about the process of making a film if you think a no-name first time film director has the power to dictate over casting directors and the studio who plays their lead. Maybe if Rupert Sanders had a proven track record, it would have been different and he'd have a say but before Snow White he was an advert director that would have no real say on anything other than directing the actual film itself. He's basically a rent-a-director. It's cute that you tried it but you obviously don't know the first thing you're talking about.

It's quite a sexist pattern emerging here of you accusing actresses you're not fond of sleeping their way into roles. You wouldn't accuse men of doing the same.

He's a producer in name only due to a contract obligation because he produced one of the earlier ASIB films. You do not know better or more about this situation than the Producers' Guild so don't try it. If you're ignoring the context then you have no point because your point is built on a purposeful lack of context that gets completely destroyed when you factor in the truth of the situation.

ASIB didn’t win at TIFF (which in the long run is a really good thing), Green Books did (idk either!) but anyway La La La experienced the same sort of huge praising and when it went on to win TIFF, people started to hate on the film and it caused a bit of a backlash, plus Spotlight, Moonlight, and The Shape of Water are the past 3 BP winners, all played TIFF, and none of them placed in the top 3 either, so if anything it’s quite promising that it didn’t win :hee:

The cinema was full, but me and my friends were the youngest there, the place was packed with groups of middle aged women(a scream), the last 15/20 minutes are phenomenal, my best friend was balling throughout - and she said she was holding back and was going to have a proper cry when she gets home :laugh2:

The final song is incredible, completes the trio of movie ballads - My Heart Will Go On, I Will Always Love You and I'll Never Love Again https://atrl.net/uploads/emoticons/jonny5.gif

how good is the soundtrack?

Amazing, i wasn’t overly keen on Bradley’s songs (even though he sounds great on them)

There’s 3 really pop songs too that the gays will love (Hair, Body, Face/Why did you do that/Heal Me) my faves are I’ll Never Love Again (this song is gonna be her My Heart Will Go On/I will always love you) Is that alright? (Which isn’t even in the bloody film, only plays over the credits :fist:) and Always remember us this way

I listened to Heal Me, Why Did You Do That, Hair Body Face and Is That Alright? before hand, the first three don’t get performed in full and don’t really add much to the film and then I listened to ITA bc gags posted the teaser and it sounded amazing/I doubt my friends would have let me sit through the credits to listen to the whole song.

I’d say you could listen to the whole soundtrack beforehand but save Always Remember Us This Way/both versions of Ill Never Love Again for the film

Just come back from seeing it. It is very worthy of the hype. Lady Gaga's incredible, Bradley Cooper does a very good job although his choice in how he speaks inhibits his performance I think, he's always grumbling and it's quite difficult to make out what he's saying half the time. Still it's a strong performance and I expect they'll both be nominated for an Oscar in a few months time although it'll only be Gaga that walks away with one I think.

I heard that the film was quite emotional and, for me, it really didn't become emotional until the last few minutes but when it got me, it got me.

Spoilers for the end.
The film felt overly long in places but it made the weird decision to not cover Ally's reaction to Jack's suicide or the immediate aftermath and I think that robbed the film of a lot of it's emotional punch... Until the last song that is, I could legitimately hear people sobbing in the cinema.

It's a 10/10 tbh. My only criticism is that it's a bit long in the wrong places but still, it's not a huge drawback.

Defintely agree with this, I found it quite hard to understand Jackson’s brother at times too, and he wasn’t even playing drunk :o

From what I’ve heard the latter part of the film happens quickly in the other films too in relation to *that* so I think it was a conscious choice.

The atmosphere in the cinema was amazing, I’ve never been in a showing before where you could here a pin drop at the credits and I guess it’s just a testament to how enthralled everyone was in the final performance

So the real GaGa is moreso Joanne / Star Is Born GaGa? Tbh this is the best music she has produced with BTW coming in second I feel like she will be like an iconic ballad singer like Celine and Mariah if she continues with this I don’t know if she should go back to pop because it feels like a wasted voice.

Well not necessarily, bc she still wrote those songs, I just imagine they mean less to her (in a sense that it wasn’t really saying much) as apposed to songs like Born This Way/Edge of Glory/Million Reasons where she got to say what she wanted to say

But I defitnely agree with that, she’s up their as one of THE best vocalists of this generation

I saw ASIB this evening, and I'm just blown away.

I totally agree with what Nadia Sawalha's husband said: 'the best films begin for you the moment you leave the cinema'. I can't stop crying.

This film has so many beautiful layers to its plot, and everything about it is executed perfectly. This truly is an 'important' film for people to see, I think. Honestly, the last scene/song with the flashback killed me, and still does. And all this without me even considering how much I adore Lady Gaga...

I have absolutely no doubt that this is comfortably one of the top few things Gaga has done in her career. Her performance was flawless, and I haven't felt this strongly about her since I finally fell in love with her when Joanne came out.

I have never cried in the cinema before and ASIB really did that :bawling: I had no idea ASIB would turn out this...massive?

A beautiful film, and one that everyone should see.

..I’m not sure why but I didn’t really invest in Jack so much...maybe because it felt like Bradley Cooper in the role seemed quite influenced by Kris Kristofferson..but I was so invested in Ally from the very first scene.....GaGa was incredible, she was perfection..and La Vien Rose has always been one of my favourite songs and she sung it beautifully...

...I did fight tears back quite a few times...not very successfully ...but by the end I felt I was made of stone, no tears left.....maybe it was because of stuff said on here that I had prepared and strengthened myself for the song... then outside the door and on the way to the car, I was in pieces and trying to hide my face...as the tears wouldn’t stop...I obviously knew the ending as well...but I’ll Never Love Again and Ally singing it and then the flashback to them both singing it together....ughhhhhh....

And I am SO happy Shallow is in the top 5, and INLA could absolutely smash with some promotion. Her first UK number 1 in seven ****ing years is coming :flutter:

This wasn't meant to bait btw, I just don't think chart positions matter all that much, and in a week or two ASIB will overtake and probably remain for a while.

Phew ASIB has now entered IMDB top 250

207. A Star Is Born (8.1)
https://www.imdb.com/chart/top?ref_=tt_awd

IMDb only considers votes from regular voters (the film has an overall rating of 8.5), so stans aren’t to blame for this, just the good old GP :clap1:

The REAL reviews I guess you might say?

Didn't think id end up going to see this in the cinema because I thought Gav would hate it but surprisingly he said he actually like Lady GaGa and thinks she's really talented, so might go see it during the week

A Star Is Born posted a sensational second weekend hold, repeating its £3.1m opening with a 0% drop. Including midweek takings and previews, the film has moved to £9.6m.

While the film has been boosted by strong word-of-mouth and critical reaction, one further explanation for that result is that the UK’s third biggest multiplex chain, Vue Cinemas, didn’t play the film in its opening weekend due to a disagreement over bookings terms. However, that dispute was resolved at the end of last week, and the film played in all 89 Vue sites this weekend. In total, the film played in 612 cinemas this weekend, in contrast with 537 in its opening session.

:clap1:

Bradley Cooper Got Tutored By Eddie Vedder For His Role In The New ‘A Star Is Born’ Remake

https://liveforlivemusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Screen-Shot-2018-10-03-at-2.29.32-PM-740x390.png

On Friday, October 5th, the latest reboot of Hollywood classic A Star Is Born will hit theaters nationwide. The new update stars real-life pop superstar Lady Gaga and four-time Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper, who also made his directorial debut and on the film. In the new remake of A Star Is Born, Cooper plays a heavy-drinking, aging musician who discovers and falls in love with a budding young singer-songwriter (Gaga) and spirals out of control as her rising star begins to eclipse his own. In order to capture the essence of a middle-aged rock star onscreen, Cooper consulted with someone very familiar with that sort of character: Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder.

As Bradley Cooper explains in a video interview with Yahoo Entertainment, “I went up to Seattle and spent four or five days with him and I asked him 9,000 questions. And he gave me minor, little things that only musicians know about what to do, just aesthetically and the inner workings. … He was wonderful.” Cooper also joked that Vedder initially warned against him making another A Star Is Born remake. “He thought it was crazy I was going to do this movie,” Cooper laughed. “He was like, ‘What? Bro, don’t do that.’”

That hesitance from Vedder is understandable. In 1937, at the dawn of the Technicolor era in film, the showbiz romantic drama stole the hearts of audiences everywhere with its tale of an aspiring young actress’s fraught path toward Hollywood success starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. An oft-referenced piece of timeless American cinema, A Star Is Born has been remade periodically, including an updated interpretation starring Judy Garland and James Mason (1954) and a rock musical version featuring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson (1976). Cooper’s remake will mark the fourth version of the film to be released.
