Looks awesome :D I just hope it's for XBox One as well...
I forget, is the "canon" gameplay Claire A - Leon B? Or vice-versa?

The first two were qunitessential horror survival games. Absolutely loved them, so I hope this one will be good. Hope there's lots of puzzles like in the originals.

She looks a bit better in game, I guess she is younger here (also this is on the RE Engine, so they've probably updated everyone's looks, at least she isnt as different as Chris Redfield was lol)

Yeah, she looks better in that picture tbh but she does look like she's been less developed than Leon at this point. It's just in motion she looks...strange...I can't explain it.

I agree. Looks like Claire is not done yet in the picture. She looks different than her last game.

What's the "canon" order, is it Claire A-Leon B?
user104658
11-01-2019, 11:01 PM
What's the "canon" order, is it Claire A-Leon B?
Claire A is canon because (spoiler I guess?)
In Resi 6, Sherry has fast healing due to being infected with a version of the G Virus, and she doesn't get infected in Claire B
Leon A or B could be considered canon as there's nothing in Resi 4 or 6 that contradicts either path. Although,
Leon B makes it explicit that Ada is still alive, as a "shadowy figure" (that is clearly Ada's silhouette) throws you a weapon during a boss fight in B. At the end of A he thinks she's dead, although it is possible she could have survived, but in Resi 4 he already knows that she's alive before they meet. But that could be something he learned later.
IIRC I actually preferred playing Claire-A-Leon-B though... but I think that's because I liked Leon's weapon loadout better, and B is harder.
I honestly played that game to death because for like 6 months after I got my PSX, the only games I owned for it were Resi 2 and Tekken 3 :joker:. The only game in the series I played more was 4.

Played it! Had several minor heart attacks, but got through! My thoughts:
I hope there's some kind of aim assist, I hate having to aim manually
They moved the Licker! I was on edge in the original corridor, especially near the hanging man
I nearly **** myself when the zombies could open doors
I wonder if the Crimson Heads are coming back
I wish I tried going out the front door, see if I could go and get the bowcaster ...

I will be sad if there is no auto aim, I find that with no auto aim I concerntrait on the controls more than the atmosphere of the game. Wouldn't even mind an auto aim that locks on the body and you can drift the aim to the head

Depending on how much you wanna know:
all the doors off the entrance hall start off as locked (unlike the original where you could explore) bar the one leading to the offices, which is right beside the front door. The black guy (the one who you meet wounded in the office originally) rescues you when you've finished that part for now (you get a plan to escape from a guy who dies). The corridor on the left certainly teases the presence of a Licker, with a mauled officer and another hanging from the ceiling, but like I said it's not there. Instead it's near the library.

The demo was sensational, I don't think it was scary (not a lot scares me anymore) but it's insanely tense. The atmosphere is fantastic.
I think like how they twisted the dog corridor in REmake, I love what they've done with the Licker here because I spent the last few minutes of the demo with shredded nerves as I didn't have a clue when to expect the licker to appear. I still don't have a clue and I can only imagine that it's true introduction will probably be one of the few occasions this game will succeed in making me jump out of my skin.

That's probably why they changed it up - Old People(tm) will be on edge because they don't know where the Licker is, and people who've not played the original or seen a Let's Play won't know a change has been made.

You know what I've realised what's quite interesting? They've not shown any gameplay of the opening yet, all the gameplay footage released has been of the police station and the sewer but basically nothing of the city. Given how intense the Police Station is, I'm really interested in seeing what that initial dash to the police station will be like.

I wonder if it will either be condensed, or have story added to those bits - it's a bit repetitive, there's more alleys and sidestreets than is needed. I wouldn't mind if it was shortened to initial dash to gun shop-street leading to crashed bus-street leading to police station.
(if anyone's not played it yet, do you fancy trying to see if you can go out the front door?)
Edit: just remembered I have a spare account. If anyone cares - you can go out the front door, but the courtyard only has locked doors, and the gates to the city are blocked by zombies.

One thing I never really understood is why Leon and Claire (and Chris, Jill etc.) never catch the basic T-virus and turn into zombies when they are all bitten HUNDREDS of times during Resi 0 - 3 + Code Veronica and everyone else who gets bitten turns .
It makes more sense in Resi 4/5 and the non-normal-zombie sections of 6 where the infection is parasitic and needs to be somewhat deliberately delivered... but yeah... Leon and Claire should have been shambling about within a couple of hours :joker:
TBH It's a shame they didn't do a Resi 1 "full Resi4+ style" over-the-shoulder remake before this... it would have been awesome to eventually have all of them from 0 - 6 in the same style. Though I'm not sure if Zero, Nemesis or Code Veronica would have the popularity to justify a remake I guess :(. Nemesis was OK but didn't have the atmosphere of 1 and 2, and CV and Zero were a bit niche.
Anyway, just grabbing the demo on Steam just now :hee:. I'll probably play the full game on PS4 though. I've started enjoying PSN trophies for literally no reason :umm2:.

Haha, not so far! Though I wouldn't be surprised if the outside for the demo is just a "placeholder".

Come to think of it I never finished 6 because I got frustrated with the ammo situation :umm2:. I finished Chris, part of Leon and played a tiny bit of... err... the other guy. I can't even remember the name!
I have it on Steam bought in a random sale I think, might CheatEngine in a tonne of ammo and plough through it quickly. I also didn't finish 7 :umm2:... I honestly wasn't the biggest fan of the switch to first person.

I have heard a rumour that the game may start at the gas station where Leon meets Claire instead of after they crash the car but I'm not sure how reliable that is.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how the opening is handled.

It wouldn't make for a good gameplay experience, I suppose if you wanted to try to apply logic to the virus, you could say that if you don't actually die to the zombie bites that it won't turn you. The only time you see people instantly become monsters is when they tend to get injected after all, most of the zombies you see have been partly devoured.
I think another RE1 remake would be a bit much especially after the relatively recent remaster of REmake. I definitely think that Nemesis is popular enough for a remake, especially considering that RE2 is slated to do insanely well.
Given how Mr. X works in this game, the technology is already there to make Nemesis work as a persistent threat as well.
I think Zero can rot tbh, I hated that game. Code Veronica is excellent and I think it stands a decent chance when RE2 sells well.

REmake wasnt great though IMO. It was fine on the GameCube but the latest release felt like... a not-very-good port of a GameCube game. Because that's what it was.
I honestly can't see Nemesis or CV doing as well as 2 to be honest... They're decent enough games but neither have the same sort of iconic locations and set pieces as 1 and 2 (and 4, and even 5 in its own way).

I can't even remember any setpieces from the third one ... wasn't there a hospital?
Exactly! I remember a warehouse... and some back alleys. There was a fair bit outdoors. But it wasn't the mansion, or the police station / underground lab, or the (flawless IMO) village-castle-island transition of Resi 4. Re-treading the same areas several times is a big part of the Resi experience in my opinion, the locations become as important as the characters and you know them inside out. It lost that completely in 3 and also in 6, and to an extent 5, as you were constantly moving on. Though I think it was partially remedied in 5 as it had a chapter select feature right from the off, and heavily encouraged re-playing areas several times. I remember farming the "Licker corridor" for days, must have killed thousands of the poor buggers, I don't know if I'll even find them any more after herding them like gem-dropping cattle. The firepower in Resi 5 was hilariously OP.

REmake is easily the best traditional RE game and I think it's held up over the years. I don't think it's aged badly at all. It was excellent on release and it's still pretty great now. It took everything that made the original a classic and amped it up and they weren't scared to change things up either. REmake is a perfect remake.
Nemesis certainly has the potential to do well, RE2 is most likely going to be a massive success and it's likely going to result in people wanting more classic Resident Evil and Capcom is likely to listen. With Nemesis, it's less about the separate locations and more about the fact that you could finally explore Raccoon City as one of the few common complaints about RE2 was that you were only out in the city for a brief time before. Not only that but Nemesis was the first true persistent enemy that the game ever had and the only real thing standing in the way of a Nemesis remake is that Mr. X in RE2R kinda cannabilises that idea (although I suppose he was kind of the proto-Nemesis to begin with). Still, the thought of Nemesis charging after you in a RE2R style game is terrifying.
Code Veronica is more niche but the fact that it is a direct sequel to RE2 makes it more likely that it could be remade following RE2's release.
Tom4784

I started a game on the original RE2 earlier, got to the Police Basement so I'm not far off finishing the police station, I believe. I've enjoyed it so far, it's been years since I played it last and it'll be fun to see how different the remake will be from the original when I've refreshed my memory of the original.

Played & enjoyed it but I am ANNOYED. It took forever to get the game started (black-screening on the menu) and then I played like 15 minutes and it crashed... and when I restarted it, the game had reset to the start but it still only gave me the remaining 15 minutes :hmph:. I got up to getting the Spade (I think?) key and being radio'd to come back to the entrance as the injured cop "had something to show me", but my time ran out before I actually got there.
Dunno if it's just issues with the demo or if the PC version is going to be glitchy overall. Planning to get for PS4 anyway so not a huge issue I guesssss.

I hadn't found any of the keys, you got further than me!It was just randomly sitting on a desk upstairs. But it's just for opening one of the other doors back to the main area. There's also an add-on pouch in the same area that increases your inventory by 50% which would have been pretty handy... If I'd had more than 90 seconds of the demo left :joker:
user104658
19-01-2019, 05:13 PM
Also confession: I couldn't get the script for unlimited demo time to work, but while I was on cheat engine I tinkered a bit and got the handgun ammo to lock at 12 (so unlimited ammo and never had to reload, it would go down to 11 for a split second then reset to 12) because I wanted to get as far as possible with my mere 15 minutes without worrying about ammo :joker:. Some of the zombies take an unreasonable number of headshots to kill?? I wonder if guns will be upgradeable like Resi 4 onwards... I don't remember it taking 9+ shots to down a basic zombie in the original Resi 2. There also doesn't seem to be a melee attack (no Resi 4 roundhouse kick or Resi 5 falcon-punch :( ) and the knives are degradable so using an entire clip to kill one zombie seems unreasonable...
I also played a little bit of Resi 4 earlier and got a refresher of Leon becoming a ninja. You can only start on normal and I've beaten that game like 10 times on Pro :joker:. But yes... The initial enemies take at most three bullets (or a bullet, a kick and a stab to save ammo).

:joker: The IGN reviewer played Leon A then Claire A and based his original review on that... saying that it was really disappointing that the two characters had almost identical paths through the game :umm2:. They had to retract part of the review and upped the score (from 8.8 to 9.0)...

I was on the original RE2 a few days back, only had time to complete Claire's campaign but it was enough to refresh my memory of the old game.
Also, it's apparently been revealed that (not spoilers for the game itself but for the enemies you face).
The crows and spiders have been removed which has a lot of purists pissing themselves in rage but I don't think it's that big of an issue. They both felt they were included in the original for budgetary reasons in the old game since they had such a minor presence. Seeing the spiders would have been cool and unsettling but I don't miss the crows one bit.
They probably should have brought back the manspider concepts that got scrapped from the original game, a zombie with spider appendages would be terrifying.

I was actually thinking when I played the demo of this, that I would love a remake of DC and DC2 in "modern Resi" over-the-shoulder style, and then a follow up "proper" DC3 as the series basically ended with DC2 (on a cliffhanger, no less).

However I have just had it dawn on me that "Dino Crisis" is a ridiculous name for a game :joker:.
...though... Resident Evil lowkey is too, it's just iconic now. But let's face it, if it was today they would just have stuck with Biohazard for the western release.

Granted, both names are a bit silly. Maybe "Cretaceous Crisis" would work, as twerps who think they're being clever like to point out most of the archosaurs in Jurassic Park are actually from the Cretaceous period :p

I've played the first hour or so, mostly just scoured the place for items. It's excellent so far although the beginning is a bit disappointing in it's briefness, you're basically deposited right outside the police station but it's only a small problem really.
The licker is also stressing me out. After seeing it in the window but not hearing and seeing it again since has me peering around every corner all like.

I came across the first licker earlier.
I was surprised how lowkey it's entrance was, might have been more of a fright if I didn't spot it on the ceiling before it scooped the body up though.
I've managed to get a decent chunk further I think, I've beaten Birkin for the first time, met Ada and Ben, powered up the basement, returned to the police station and now I'm on the hunt for the last electric box to get into Ben's cell and grab the keycard. I've not encountered Mr. X yet but judging by Ben's scene, he's not far off.
Oh, I had to kill Marvin too </3 poor Marvin, at least he got a bigger role this time around.
I'm REALLY enjoying it. I'm gonna keep blasting away at it and hopefully complete Leon's campaign over the weekend in time for Kingdom Hearts 3, after which I'll go back and do the rest of the campaigns.

Yup, they were actually blind in the original too, you could walk past them when you encountered them outside of ambushes but most people didn't realise that.
There is a problem in places where they appear alongside zombies though since they'll react to zombie sounds.

I've completed Leon's campaign, I really loved it. Is it too early to seriously consider this to be a GOTY contender? I only had two issues with the game and that was the first Mr. X chase as it went on far too long and it had the effect of tainting his appearances beyond that and Ada's section which I found to be an utter ball ache due to the Hacking Tool being a terrible mechanic. That being said, neither of those issues really dampened the game for me very much, I'm really excited to play Claire's campaign but I'm gonna take a break in order to play through Kingdom Hearts 3 (and hopefully forget the finer points of the game in the mean time so I can rediscover it all again).
RE2 is easily a 9.5 for me (would have been an easy 10 if not for the aforementioned two annoying parts). This is what a remake should be.

Tom4784
27-01-2019, 12:23 PM
I thought I was being clever during that first chase, I ran into the library, ran up the stairs and stood by one of the doors so I could see him coming up the stairs so I could loop him, back then I didn't know there was a ladder and I turned around just in time for him to sucker punch me. I honestly screeched.
It's a shame he becomes such a joke after a few minutes though, the part when he's active in the police station goes on too long and it robs him of his power after a while because I just ended up seeing him again and again and I just rolled my eyes instead of being scared of him like I was when I first encountered him. Instead of being a persistent threat, they should have made him so he has set piece chases.
I hope they learn from X's mistakes when it comes to the inevitable RE3 remake. X was a good concept but the execution on his first appearance ruins him.

So he appears in A? That's kind of lame in itself because part of what made it so good in the original was that you really got to know the station inside out at a more chill pace on the A playthroughs and then it was a major spanner in the works on the B playthroughs.

That's still the case in a sense as he doesn't appear until later on. Minor spoilers I guess?
He doesn't appear in A until after you've returned to the station from the basement so you'll have explored most of the station by that point. It's not like B in the original game when he appears almost immediately (although Ive heard that's the case with the Remake's B campaigns).

I think they'll fast track it in all honesty, from what I've heard, RE2's gonna be a juggernaut in terms of sales and Capcom loves to double down on a good thing. I do think that X as he is in this game was probably them experimenting with how to make Nemesis work in a potential remake.
RE3 Remake will either be a swan song for the PS4 (with an inevitable Definitive edition for next gen consoles) OR a launch title for the next generation.

I imagine the development cycle will be much shorter than RE2 remake anyway, as they'll just use the RE2 Remake variation of the RE engine for it with few (if any) changes. RE2 Remake has had a fairly lengthy development but a lot of that was because they were still developing the bare bones of the system, and it's clearly had some quite heavy modifications made between RE7 and this.
I personally just hope they do RE8 onwards with this variation and not the RE7 first person mode... wasn't really a fan at all :(. Resi just doesn't belong as a first person game.

I prefer third person and was vehemently opposed to RE7's first person perspective since I thought Capcom was just trying to turn the franchise into Amnesia or Outlast but I ended up adoring RE7. For all it's differences and changes, it was the most classic styled RE game in years.
If Capcom develops RE3 Remake for the current gen consoles then I don't doubt that they'll probably develop RE8 alongside it for next gen.

I also loved Resident Evil 7 HOWEVER it didn't feel like a resident evil game. That's not to say I didn't love it, I replayed it multiple times and would love it as a stand alone game. I miss the resident evil franchise however, and that just didn't feel like a resident evil game to me... I wouldn't mind if they had that format as a spin off of games

I have to disagree completely, it was quintessential Resident Evil, item and ammo management, an emphasis on horror, puzzle solving and exploration and avoiding enemies as opposed to gunning down everything in your path.
The only deviation from the classic formula was the first person perspective and the lack of zombies.

Potentially although all the characters included so far also happen to have models in the game already.
Apparently there's been some models datamined for Ethan from RE7 and that game's version of Chris so they could be unlockable characters in it.

I'm on my third playthrough now. I did both characters' normal campaigns first since I wanted to see what they both were like before trying out the second runs and so now I'm playing through Leon's second campaign and I'm just about to go to the lab.
I'll never get S rank and I'm not too fussed about trying because I don't like speedrunning. I prefer the slow and steady approach.
I do like how, in the second campaigns, there's a lot more callbacks to the original RE2 in terms of enemy placements and references and such.

Am I the only one who doesn't find poor Mr X threatening at all? I don't know if it's because of overpaying Resi 4 to death and being overly familiar with some of the game mechanics that still seem to be in place (e.g. simply walking backwards will 90% of the time cause enemies lunging forward to fail to hit of grab you) but Mr X has yet to kill me...
I also think playing this on PC with keyboard and mouse makes some things too easy, e.g. Dogs. They're fast but they die easily, and while I can imagine their speed makes them worse on console, they're just no match for mouse-aiming. I don't think one has managed to get anywhere near me :umm2:
In fact I've only died once in the game and it was in Leon A just after moving the book cases, 3f balcony main hall, ran up to the corner not paying attention already on yellow health and didn't notice two plain ol' zombies were stood there and they ate me :joker:

I never found Mr X himself that threatening, most of my problems with him came from running into corridors crawling with lickers but once you learn the map and know which areas to avoid he's pretty easy to escape.

This is exactly why I did it lol. I played Claire A again immediately after finishing her so I didn't "waste" a playthrough. Now I just have Leon B to finish the game and can go at a lot slower pace now the enemy threat is a lot less, it's also nice just to get some payback on enemies I let off on other runs

Mr. X is intimidating at first, he's potentially the scariest thing they've ever put in a RE game at first simply because you don't know the rules of how he works. I remember running through the police station to get away from him, almost screaming my head off at the unexpected horde of lickers and hiding in the dark room with my shotgun aimed at the door because I didn't know if Mr. X could enter save rooms or not.
When you know how he works though, it's just a matter of ensuring that you've cleared a route between the lever you need from the west wing to the library and then back to the basement.
user104658

His reappearance in the lab is slightly pointless too since you just bolt straight out the door and over to the west wing, and (as far as I can tell?) he doesn't follow you there and just reappears for the boss fight.

But what is really bugging me now is that Claire could BLATANTLY climb over that gate :suspect:. And they would clearly be much safer / morw efficient working as a team.
Though I guess in the original they actually meet up inside the station really early on and actually CHOOSE to split up :joker:
In all seriousness though this is a criticism I have of the game :worry:... From what I remember of the original, the two characters had quite a bit more contact? I'm sure they had radios and kept in touch at key points.
They feel very separate in the remake and I think that is detrimental to the character development... I get that they probably removed the radio contact to make it feel like a more isolated experience, but IMO they should have kept it in.

I don't think you even particularly need to clear a route though, there aren't many areas where you can't just kite him round a room?
You can but it's generally a good idea to clear out pathways you'll use often anyway. I always clear out the Library since it's the best place to run him round and the pathways to the Chief's office/ the save room by the basement depending if I'm using Leon or Claire.
By that point I can usually clear out enough enemies without getting myself into a bad position since I'll have a box full of gunpowder and reserve ammo anyway.

I thought the gate scene was cute tbh, yeah it's got logical holes in it but Resident Evil has always been a horror film presented as a game, the protagonists have to make dumb choices.
It's a bit strange how little contact Claire and Leon have throughout the game though, we carry around that Radio that Marvin gives us only for it to never be used again after he calls us back to the main hall that one time.
