Judge: BBC infringed Sir Cliff’s privacy rights without justification.

Sir Cliff Richard has won his High Court privacy case against the BBC over its coverage of a police raid on his home.

A judge delivered his ruling on the case on Wednesday morning. Sir Cliff has said he wanted damages at the "top end" of the scale.

The 77-year-old singer took legal action against BBC bosses over coverage of the South Yorkshire Police raid on his home in Sunningdale, Berkshire, in August 2014, following a child sex assault allegation.

Sir Cliff arrived at court in a grey people carrier to cheers and shouts of good luck from about a dozen fans. Dressed in a dark suit and spotted tie, he smiled his thanks and placed his hands together in greeting.

I'm glad. Of all the accused over the last couple of years I never thought he was guilty. I grew up with Cliff Richard, there was a point when my Mum was a girl when she thought it was inevitable she and Cliff would marry LOL... Anyhoo, great news, a slap in the fact for the police and the BBC who handled this whole thing appallingly.

He looked really emotional on the news,it must have been awful to have your privacy invaded like that.

He's looked awful over the last year or so, so thin and grey in the face. He says his life has been changed forever and I believe him.

The thing that annoys me with Britain's relationship with Cliff Richard is that people think he's "uncool". I remember that idiot Chris Evans saying he wasn't playing anymore Cliff tracks. But even if you don't like him, you have to acknowledge that he's had hit records in every decade in the 1950s. He's sold more records in the UK than Elvis, The Stones and David Bowie.

Conversely, when French rocker Johnny Holliday (a contemporary of Cliff's) died, the country lined the streets for his funeral. In the UK? If he's not current, he's nothing.

What annoys me is the blatant inconsistency of the BBC. They continually state that they don't report anything unless facts are verified and yet here they destroyed Cliff's reputation on a whim.

i don't see why the cost of the fine should be borne by the British public. It should come out of responsible executives pay packets

Chris Evans could only dream to be as successful as Cliff Richards, it was silly not to play his records, heads, I hope the BBC are proud of themselves...…….not

And that's why he deserves such a big payout, Parm. And the people who did this need to pay. No matter that there was no evidence, no matter than he complied with police completely, no matter that he was never even charged, let alone convicted... some people will always assume he was guilty.

It appertains to the whole elm guest house conspiracy. A conspiracy with no legs, no proof that has been challenged and discredited time and again... and yet people believe it still. Because they want to.

Some 'Sicko' people not only cannot stand the fact that Cliff is a committed Christian who has created no whiff of scandal but also detest his right NOT to broadcast his sexuality.

Adam Ant's 'Goody Two Shoes' lyrics says it all:

Goody two, goody two
Goody, goody two shoes
Goody two, goody two
Goody, goody two shoes
You don't drink, don't smoke
What do you do
You don't drink, don't smoke
What do you do
The subtle innuendos follow
There must be something inside

Fran Unsworth said the judgment would not just affect the corporation, but every media organisation's freedom to report on police investigations.
She said the resulting lack of scrutiny could "undermine the wider principle of the public's right to know" and would "put decision making in the hands of the police".]

I'd rather the decision was in the hands of the police, than in the hands of a newspaper or agency that is interested only in viewing figures and circulation.

Fame is a two way street I wonder is some unknown would get the same pay out as a multi millionaire

Some unknown wouldn't have been on the lunchtime news, his house being shown live by BBC helicopter.

Whereabouts in American is someone who hasn't been charged or even spoken to at that point, having their home raided by police, live on TV... an everyday occurrence? I'd be interested to know...

You are so right, Arista but don't forget that the award made to Cliff against South Yorkshire Police is 'Public Tax-Payers' money too.

None of it adds up to the £4million which is roughly the amount of Cliff's legal costs. Furthermore, I find it less offensive that they pay their fine with licence payers cash, than the hugely inflated salaries and bonuses splashed around in the BBC's upper echelons, usually to old school chums sipping champagne and leaning decidedly Left.

Am I being misunderstood on different threads today, Liv?

They cannot pay Cliff enough for what he has been through as far as I am concerned and I totally agree with you.

I was merely pointing out that both payments are Tax-Payers money.

Oh I wasn't disagreeing with you Kirk. They have no alternative but to pay him! All I meant was that, if they wanted to save some money to pay his expenses, they could do that by getting rid of some of their overpaid executives.

Like I might disagree with you… tut.....
