Look up tonight! Mars will appear three times bigger in the night sky as the red planet orbits closer to Earth than it has for the last 15 years
Mars will be just 35.8 million miles (57.6 million kilometres) from Earth tonight
The red planet will appear bigger and brighter than usual in the night sky tonight
Mars is visible to the naked eye, but those with telescopes will get the best view
Known as 'perihelic opposition', the phenomenon occurs when Mars reaches its closest point to the sun at the same time as the Earth is lined-up between the two

We shelled out £400 on a telescope a couple of years ago and the only interesting thing I managed to see was Jupiter :hmph:. The solar system is so rubbish.

I can only see one star in the sky right now so I'm saying it's Mars

Very clear, loads of stars tonight, no moon though :suspect:
When Mars and Earth are close to each other, Mars appears very bright in our sky. It also makes it easier to see with telescopes or the naked eye. The Red Planet comes close enough for exceptional viewing only once or twice every 15 or 17 years.

No it wouldn't
Did you get your expensive kit out to view?
But then we would all live closer together Ammi and surely that can only be a good thing .
...hmmm yeah it could be a good thing.....but that depends if you Scottish people stick with us English people through the Brexit years to come and don’t go for that independence again...I believe the rules of that if you do..?...is you won’t be part of planet Earth anymore and you’ll have to go find your own new planet...which could only be a bad thing, surely TS.......
