View Full Version : India's Supreme Court legalises Gay Sex

In a historic decision, India's Supreme Court has ruled that gay sex is no longer a criminal offence.

The ruling overturns a 2013 judgement that upheld a colonial-era law, known as section 377, under which gay sex is categorised as an "unnatural offence".

The court has now ruled discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is a fundamental violation of rights.

Campaigners outside the court cheered and some broke down in tears as the ruling was handed down.

Although public opinion in India's biggest cities has been in favour of scrapping the law, there remains strong opposition among religious groups and in conservative rural communities.

Thank ****. I mean, it's shameful that it took them so long, but I'm glad they finally did it.

Well there's also a few Christian ones that still need to wake up.

Good for India although it's sad it's taken so long. Still, progress is good.

There’s whole continents that haven’t woken. Not just “a few countries.”

Oh yeah... and sections of Judaism too. There are misguided, ignorant and ill-informed people all over. But changing a country like India's law like this is massive... and just I can't see Saudi Arabia following suit.

Almost all religion consider homsexuality an abomination although there are large parts of all those religions that support gay rights too. Seems a bit strange to pick on Islam when all religion is guilty of the same crimes in that regard, it's also flawed reasoning to place the blame squarely at the blame of all of Islam when the issue is more commonly down to those in power enforcing the more backwards elements of the religion is keep hold of power.

Plenty of other countries of other faiths could easily be led down the same path by their own religion, it's better to take issues with those in power than with the religion itself. All religion is vast and full of differing opinions, to paint in broad strokes is to paint an image of half truths.

If they can do it in India then why can’t they legalise it here in Singapore as well?!

Anyways congrats to them, a huge step forward... :)

My opinion, govt has no place in the bedroom anyway... it's not like institutions don't have more pressing matters to focus on... always seemed like a non-issue for me...
