Swedes are voting in a general election on Sunday that promises to be very close and that could see the far-right take on a key role in shaping the next government.

If the polls are correct, neither of the two main political groups — the center-left bloc that includes the ruling Social Democrats; and the four-party center-right opposition known as the Alliance — will win a majority.

According to an amalgamation of opinion polls, the Social Democrats of Prime Minister Stefan Löfven will win 25 percent of the vote, with the Moderates on 17 percent. The big winners are likely to be the far-right Sweden Democrats, on course to win around 20 percent of the vote — up from around 13 percent at the last election.

But while striking a deal with the Sweden Democrats — who have made migration and law and order the key planks of their election campaign — would give either bloc a majority, both have ruled out working with a party that has its roots in the neo-Nazi movement. Löfven has called the Sweden Democrats “a neo-fascist single-issue party which respects neither people’s differences nor Sweden’s democratic institutions.”

Migration on the agenda

While the rise of the SD predates Europe’s immigration crisis of 2015, its support has risen in the wake of it.

Along with Germany, Sweden was at the forefront of welcoming asylum seekers from Syria and other war zones — it took in 163,000 asylum seekers in 2015 alone. Sweden has since tightened its laws on how long asylum seekers can stay in the country and made it tougher for family members to join them, but SD has maintained its call for further restrictions.

SD supporters say the country’s public services are being overwhelmed and they buy Åkesson’s description of immigrants as little more than a drain on the system. He wants virtually all immigration halted and a much more rapid return of failed asylum seekers to their country of origin.

If the headline calls them far-right, then that pretty much guarantees they're not far-right.

As in they grew out of bona-fide Swedish fascist groups and were originally a white supremacist nationalist organisation. They officially "discarded" those links a decade or so ago, but many of their members and high profile faces were a part of those groups. Also note that this was long before the migrant crisis. So the core membership have a neo-fascist past and are unlikely to have changed; all that has changed is that they've capitalised on the migrant crisis to gain traction.

They denounced that aspect years ago, they are a bona fide right wing party who speak for a lot of Swedes and should do well.

The Sweden Democrats believe that the current Swedish immigration and integration policies have been a failure. They oppose integration because they believe that integration involves "meeting in the middle" and do not think that the indigenous Swedish people should have to bear the burden of what they see as a reckless immigration policy. SD feels that the current situation, with a large number of immigrants living in cultural enclaves, is not beneficial for the country. They argue that the immigrants themselves are rootless, that there have been rising antagonistic tensions between various population groups (socially, ethnically, religiously and culturally), and the immigration in itself, SD says, has caused social and economic strains on the country.

They denounced that aspect years ago, they are a bona fide right wing party who speak for a lot of Swedes and should do well.Officially denounced it. Most of their bigwigs are exactly the same people who were involved back then, and you'd have to be a certain sort of gullible to genuinely believe that these individuals have "changed".

Extremist parties masquerading under more moderate policies in order to get into power, and sneak in their extremist rhetoric through the back door in a palatable form.

Sure
but the Power brought in so many migrants (2015)
so many now not in work, at this time

So every crime or rape
is magnified.

More likely they're just anti Globalist establishment.

Are they going into the premises of a magazine and gunning down the workers in cold blood? Are they grooming and raping thousands of women and children, in gangs? Are they blowing up innocent people at pop concerts and on tube trains?

If the answer is no, then they're small fry and I wouldn't worry too much. They sound quite civilised compered to some living amongst us?

Yes but the hard left wing party is set to make the biggest gains

Shows the sad polarisation of politics with the hard right and hard left making gainsIt does, and it's especially concerning given the fact that in the increasingly-automated world of the future, slightly-left-of-centre politics are really the only sensible option.

According to the first exit poll, S+MP+V (centre left to left) get 41.0% and M+C+L+KD (centre right) get 40.1%. I think Sweden has PR so I doubt any would be able to make a majority...

This is what you get when the prime minister asks Swedes to "open their hearts" to refugees... and then lets in hundreds of thousands of people. No one wants their culture flooded by other cultures and that's pretty much what's happening all over Europe. I'm sure everyone realises we have a duty to real refugees and I don't have a problem with migrants who come here through UN camps. But we have no duty to economic migrants however they arrive here. Because this free-for-all has continued, and anyone questioning it is automatically looked on as a racist and their opinion shut down... you get the rise of the Right.

It's terrifying... but it's not unexpected.
