British artist's unique 'tidal' art gallery at Maldives resort is destroyed by police with pickaxes after it is deemed 'offensive to Islam'

The gallery opened at the Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi in July featuring semi-submerged sculptures
They were designed by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor and the artwork was known as the 'Coralarium'
But outgoing Maldives president Abdulla Yameen ruled that the unusual sculptures were 'offensive to Islam'
The day before a presidential election, which he lost, he ordered police to destroy the tidal gallery

Police armed with pickaxes and power tools have destroyed the world's first tidal gallery at a holiday resort in the Maldives after it was deemed 'offensive to Islam'.

The gallery, at the Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi, which opened in July, featured semi-submerged exhibits that disappeared and reappeared as the tide went in and out.

But Abdulla Yameen, the outgoing president of the tourist nation, home to 340,000 Sunni Muslims, ordered the sculptures to be demolished. Islam, the official religion in the Maldives, bans the depiction of idols, and the work provoked some criticism from clerics even though the statues have no religious symbols or meaning. :skull:

Airports too. Subjected to it twice at Dubai airport at about 6am when trying to get a bit of shut-eye. It went on and on ...

Or if you don't like the customs in another country, you have the option to not visit.

I find this really sad, it reminds me of the Nazis' destruction of art and heritage that wasn't aligned with their ideals.

This 100%

and when I go away and listen to the call to prayer I think it's beautiful. To drink a nice glass of red, watching the sun go down and having it on in the background instead of sweet bloody caroline

It’s a way to show cultural dominance and try and wipe out traces of other cultures.

Pretty much yeah - destroy anything from another culture, loudly blare out something that sounds like a footballer cleaning out their nose.

Very sad... but vandalizing/destruction of property is an issue with pretty much any public art... oh hey lemme tag my hate group on this mural... or destroy this statue b/c Hitler... and just more mundane reasoning...

I looked up what a "Call to prayer" sounds like... and found this gem in the comments section... I have to share it...

Somebody clearly took a course in how to convert Millennials ... but they forgot the Apple heathens  Lots of Millenials really love Apple products so they need to update their prophet's image with this key info...

Anyway, I think the prayer is beautiful... if it's the singing version... but I think it can't be worse than being woken up by roosters and a pack of goat/sheep waiting for morning meal like on my family's property... I have neighbors that are keeping roosters illegally and so occasionally there is the angry thread on Nextdoor and offers of free meat...

i dont have a problem with call to prayer, let me be clear, their country, their religion. I just wasn't aware before I went, that it would wake me up with such a start, being so loud, in the very early hours of the morning
