comedian bill cosby has been sentenced to three to 10 years in state prison for sexual assault.
Cosby, 81, has also been categorised as a sexually violent predator, meaning he must undergo counselling for life and be listed on the sex offender registry.
The actor declined to make a statement when a judge gave him the opportunity.
At a retrial in april, cosby was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault for drugging and molesting andrea constand in 2004.
Judge steven o'neill has also denied cosby's request for bail pending appeal.
After delivering the sentence, judge o'neill said: "mr cosby you took her beautiful healthy young spirit and crushed it."
he told ms constand he "heard the very clear impact" the assault had on her life.
Ahead of the sentence, the judge designated cosby a sexually violent predator, despite the defence's argument that cosby's age and blindness mean he is not a threat.
Tuesday's classification means he will need to register with state police and notify any community he lives in of his sex offender status, as well as undergo mandatory counselling for life.
Neighbours, childcare centres and schools will have be notified of the whereabouts of the entertainer once known as america's dad.
The actor's defence team had argued the state's sex offender law was too severe given cosby's age and the fact that he is legally blind.

Very strong words from the judge, sexually violent predator and then give a very soft sentence.

I wouldn't think they would parole him after 3... but they might for medical reasons...

To be fair he'll likely be dead in 5 anyway. But yeah if he was a younger man, 3 years for that would be a joke.

I think because of his age he should be made to pay financially to his victim.

I know but I suppose it's the principle of it, he's got away with it his whole life, he shouldn't be just let off easy because he's old now

If my understanding is right, that could still be pursued by the victim but would be a civil case for financial compensation separate to (but obviously bolstered by) the criminal prosecution.

Oh yes, medical reasons. I remember when a former Chairman of Guinness was freed from prison because he had Alzheimers. And to this day, he's the only person ever to have recovered from the disease. Now he says he never had the disease at all and yet they've not dragged him back to the pokey. Funny that.
It's all got to do with how much justice you can afford. And I say that as a lawyer.

i feel sad for his wife Camille and his children
honestly what he did was wrong, he is in jail now so justice has been served, i would say no more media attention for him or his family
he also lost his son, who got murdered in 1997 which was also tragic for the family
i have watched many episodes of The Cosby Show, he Always came over as a gentle, sweet man so finding out now what he had done just shocked me

I remember the same sympathy for an old Nazi who got sent to jail after a long life, into his 90s, with his freedom and his family.... Some people thought they should just leave the poor old fella. I don't understand this attitude.

It's actually worse when they're old because they got to live their lives and get away with it

i only have mixed feelings about this, because before i found about this i never really saw him as a evil man, but just a nice, funny guy and comedy icon for america
now i feel shocked about how he could've sexually assaulted that many women, child abuse as well i did read that either
i am like, you can't really Always recognize a sexual predator immediately, this proves that for me
what he had done is unforgivable, same about Kevin Spacey what he had done also ruined his career for life for example
same goes for Harvey Weinstein

Of course, the difference between Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey is that Spacey has never been charged with anything, it's all hearsay that's ruined his career.

Kevin Spacey admitted it I thought? They couldn't charge him because too much time had passed

*bearing in mind Rapp was 14 at the time......
Spacey responded to Rapp’s allegations by issuing a statement on Twitter in which he said he owed Rapp “the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.”
