At the conclusion of Wednesday’s Survivor: David vs. Goliath finale/reunion show, Jeff Probst showed a teaser for next season of the reality franchise, Survivor: Edge of Extinction, which will premiere Feb. 20 on CBS.

So what exactly is the Edge of Extinction? Probst is not ready to reveal too much, but he did tell us this: “The inspiration for next season came from our desire to see if we can take the show even deeper. One thing that has become apparent over the last several years is that the yearning for adventure in our lives is a real thing. Survivor already provides an amazing format for game play. So, what would happen if we added another challenge to the experience? A question that simply asks… How badly do you want this?”

The teaser revealed that four former players will be returning for another shot at the million dollars. Entertainment Weekly was on location for filming back in June and spoke to the entire cast before the game started. Here are the four returning players and what they had to say about why they decided to head back onto the island.

AUBRY BRACCO

“Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment, but I love Survivor. I felt like Survivor: Game Changers was not the second chance that I wanted to have. I was very much blindfolded from the beginning. It was just trying to sense what was happening, just beneath the surface, the whole game, for me, and I’m ready to play the Survivor game I want to play, a little wiser.”

“Women, they give birth. Then they get amnesia, and they forget how hard labor was. It gets them to do it again. But I remember every horrible detail about my first Survivor experience. “I felt it in my heart, prayed about it, all the other people in my life that I told that I was contemplating doing this said that they saw good things, they felt good energy, good vibes. Most importantly, I felt like I had unfinished business. I feel really good about the situation I’m in, the mental state I’m in, my physical state. This game it pushes you, it challenges you in ways you never even thought possible. I have one more challenge to prove, and that’s that I am the Sole Survivor.”

In addition to the four returning players, the teaser for Survivor: Edge of Extinction also revealed two of the new contestants competing for the million-dollar-prize: Rick Devens, who is a 33-year-old morning news anchor on WGXA in Macon, Georgia, and Wendy Diaz, a 25-year-old swap meet vendor from Los Angeles.

Coming off a season with an almost universally-loved cast, Probst thinks this next group of contestants will receive high marks as well. “I love this next group of players,” says the host. “We were looking for specific types of stories and we found them. I think the audience is going to enjoy the ride. We’re continuing to live up to our promise to our fans. As long as you keep watching, we’ll keep trying new things.”

On that last point, Probst is cagey but teases that there could be yet another big twist to Survivor in season 38. “Edge of Extinction will add another dimension to the game. I’m very excited for fans to see it!”

They will have their chance on Feb. 20.

Casting Process Changes
There have been a few changes to how the casting process works this year. As most of you already know, long-time Survivor casting director Lynne Spiegel Spillman was let go earlier this year, with seasons thirty-seven and thirty-eight being the final casts she oversaw. Spillman was replaced by Jesse Tannenbaum, who first joined Survivor as a casting associate in 2016 and has also worked in the casting department for shows such as Big Brother and The Amazing Race.

It's not just the personnel that have had a makeover. The process itself has had an update. In the past, applicants would send in their audition videos and have them reviewed by the various casting associates. If a casting associate liked a particular video, they would get in touch with the applicant and begin the process. This process would usually involve the applicant filling out various forms (personal info, medical history, etc.) and making alterations to their audition video based on feedback. The casting associate would then pitch that applicant to the casting director (formerly Lynne), and a decision would be made whether or not to bring that person to finals in Los Angeles.

However, this year, applicants must not only be pitched to the casting director, but if they continue past that stage, they must take part in separate video interviews (Skype or FaceTime) with host/exec producer Jeff Probst and fellow exec producer Matt Van Wagenen. Previously, applicants didn't meet or have any interaction with Probst or the producers until finals. Now, Probst and Wagenen have a much more hands-on approach early in the casting process, in an effort to make sure only the best applicants are brought to LA for finals week.
Season 39
As of November 23, two rounds of casting finals have taken place in LA for season 39. The first round took place the last week of September and the second round happened in early November. There is said to be one final round scheduled for December - rumoured to be filling spots for certain "archetypes" which are missing. All of these finals are for new players, not returnees.

UPDATE: 01/02/19: The Extinction Island twist will not be revealed to the entire cast up front. A player will only become aware of the twist once they are voted out. The players remaining in the game will not find out about Extinction Island until the merge when Jeff Probst brings out the eliminated castaways for their first opportunity to win their way back into the game. Think back to the Outcasts twist in Survivor: Pearl Islands to get a sense of how this might work. The winner of the challenge will reenter the game and join the merged tribe. The losers can choose to continue living on Extinction Island or quit.

I was watching this premiere a bit half-assed and at times distracted IRL at first... So I re-watched now and it was slightly better (like still not all that much happening, but a few more quality/funny moments I missed or overlooked). One general big thing is I actually like Reem quite a bit more than I was thinking... for one, the amount of times she says "dude" and "bro" as an older lady lmao :laugh2: and two... I totally missed the scene where she's holding a machete up while telling David she knows her name's being thrown around :laugh3: (although David totally MADE this moment more than she did tbh "hey would you put the machete down" :joker:).

Anyway, I didn't originally think she was annoying or anything but just not a character that appealed to me for the most part... however there's more highlights there than I thought on second watch.

True, I guess I should've spent more time talking about people like Chris and Julia and Aurora and Victoria but hindsight is 20/20.
I'm not saying Keith showed himself (or at least from what we saw) as being stronger, but I think it was more about what Reem did than what the others didn't do. Reem pissed everybody off by moving their clothes around. Her age wasn't relevant, it was her behaviour.

There was nothing funny about it though. :unsure: And I definitely wouldn't say Kelley is someone who tries to get airtime... at all. Especially in comparison to some of the favourites on here.

Every little thing Kelley did/said was picked on in here... literally. Can't wait for more episodes where she's the star yet again. :love::dance:
