Also not to try to already get into a retconning defense of Tamar Gheesling (lmao she got more jury votes than Dan did in TWO seasons, mind you!), she was totally extra but she was extra all the time? It's like how Sandra was loud as **** in Survivor, but she was always loud as **** so it was normalized and people accepted it and it made it easier for her to do more nuanced stuff behind the scenes. Tamar totally normalized how bat**** crazy she is and that just ended up making her pretty real and personable?

I'm sorry but Sandra wasn't queen-twitter personified :joker: In fact, she was just real and blunt af and even if put-on ever/at all, she was her own unique kind of extra & loud.

First to enter curse is broken!
First black winner!
First black woman winner!
Another woman winning over a man!
A unanimous vote!
During black history month!

This season is ****ing FAN FICTION and top five of all time. I'm laughing so hard and am in disbelief and am fanning myself, this is what dreams are made of

I'm surprised at the final two - Ricky was boring, and the shrieking banshee was annoying. Wish Dina had won :(

I sadly had to watch Kandi get voted out before going into a night shift. Was trying to stay spoiler free til the morning, but I just thought it'd feel pointless if Ricky ended winning. Soo very happy to hear that Tamar won, but now I'm kinding wishing I'd stayed spoiler free so that I could watch it in the morning lol.

Definitely one of the best seasons in a longgg time.

It's amazing that three people of colour have won in a row in North American BB (Paras, Kacey, and now Tamar) and I hope we continue to see them winning and it's a shame it took this long but I hope the argument can be put to bed now.

True. Why are people being looked at for their ethnicity? Really?

True. Why are people being looked at for their ethnicity? Really?

Because black people were always written off as players who could never win the game. When people like Danielle Reyes were the best players but never won makes you think that you, as a black person, you have no chance. But now a black person has won, they cannot be written off anymore and they will be able to believe that they are just as capable of winning as everyone else.

They didn’t win because the jury didn’t think they’d should win, it’s not to do with ethnicity in the way the jury vote. Calling somebody the best player is an opinion and not a fact so is irrelevant.
They are just as capable as winning as everyone else and never was anything stated otherwise.

Why is the thing you notice about the people that win is their ethnicity?

Cal.
14-02-2019, 05:01 PM
Tamar winning means the next black girl who walks into the house in the summer will be out on her arse in a week because ‘SHES JUST LIKE TAMAR’. Pity they couldn’t do this with all the plain white males who seem to sail through one after another :bored:.

Jason.
14-02-2019, 05:27 PM
True. Why are people being looked at for their ethnicity? Really?

Maybe because this show has a history of casting the same lazy trope of black woman to tick a box instead of casting ones that would make strong players and have a chance of winning, so a black woman going against the odds and winning is a milestone.

Why does it bother you so much?

JerseyWins
14-02-2019, 05:57 PM
Black people are against the odds on these shows not socially or because of racial factors or because of “which kind” they cast but because there are about 2-3 of them per season out of about 16? :joker:

Coincidence that once it’s a bit more evenly distributed a black woman wins? I think not

JerseyWins
14-02-2019, 06:00 PM
We see a fair amount more black winners on Survivor because there’s a fair amount more of them casted on a season-to-season basis. This is simple math and statistics

Not really though, we still only get about 2 black people per season on Survivor too. And the series where black/POC winners won were often as you said the seasons where there were more than 2 POCs (Earl being the biggest example - all the final 3 were black that season because there were about 2 white people in a cast of 19 )

Haven't really caught up on the past two episodes yet and ever since her disgusting treatment of Tom, I've grown to dislike her more and it'll be hard for me to be satisfied by this win I've been spoiled on.

But since we're on the subject of racial irony, in a season with a black female winner, it's funny that the straight white male Ryan was gradually completely irritating and mistrustful to the house to the point where he got the target when people with his humour normally sail to the end :joker:

I think the houseguests might have been told to do it like that just to avoid the confusion from last year when they got the placements wrong and we now just have to go with that Ariadna was 4th and Mark was 3rd which feels wrong considering Marissa said “I choose to evict Mark and Ari”

She's irritating and it's a shame she won, but she did win, so suck it up buttercup.

Why does anyone care that she's a black woman though? It's not 1950.

Because it's not hard to look at the news and see that racial equality isn't exactly There right now in the US even in 2019, so seeing some groundbreaking representation in the BBUS winners' circle is good and empowering.

What argument? Why is it any more amazing for a "POC" to win than anyone else? Do we still judge people based on race, in 2019?

Because we haven't had a black person win BBUS ever so it's a big deal, especially during Black History month.

Ricky the new Cody Calafiore for not taking Dina?

IDK if Dina would've even been the best opponent? She's crazy but people loved her and she probably would've gotten the Jonathan/Ryan/Joey block of votes at minimum, not to mention any other votes she picks up along the way just for being crazy but endearing and likable.

True. Why are people being looked at for their ethnicity? Really?

Because when white person after white person wins BBUS, it's slightly discouraging for any minority entering the house and looking to win. Representation absolutely matters and the fact that we've now had a string of three POC winners is one of the few legitimately great things I'll say about this how.

Because black people were always written off as players who could never win the game. When people like Danielle Reyes were the best players but never won makes you think that you, as a black person, you have no chance. But now a black person has won, they cannot be written off anymore and they will be able to believe that they are just as capable of winning as everyone else.

Eh, Danielle's loss was totally fair and deserved. For someone who had so much control, she willingly put herself into a scenario where she's the goat at F3 who loses either 9-1 or 10-0. Even with a sequestered jury there's still a solid 90+% chance that she loses.

They are just as capable as winning as everyone else and never was anything stated otherwise.

Why is the thing you notice about the people that win is their ethnicity?

For like the fourth time, because representation matters and having an attitude of "I don't see color " is actually very dangerous.

lolo was such a mess i was not expecting her to be like that :skull:

lmao sis Lolo has been acting like this all the way back to like 2011 at the very minimum, even before she was on TV. Girl is a disaster :joker:

Okay finally caught up and even though I had gone off Tamar, the finale reminded me of all the times and reasons I did enjoy her so she was a pretty deserving winner', far more than Ricky if we're just judging by final 2.

It's hard to say whether this or the first season was better. The first had more of an upbeat feel to it but it also sometimes jumped to this irritating vibe of everyone being happy and it being fake af and annoying, the two worst offenders of this of course being the final 2, and the second half really dulled once Shannon left. This season felt more down to earth and more likeable contestants, but it never really hit many highs for me. Overall though two pretty good seasons and still worth following.
