Watched the first two eps so far, it's a cute show, didn't think I'd like it but I'm quite into it! Eric is hilarious <3

Also I KNEW I recognised the girl with the neck brace from ep 2:

Just watched the first two (or three? idk) episodes and it's pretty great. Reminds me a little of shows like Beautiful People, My Mad Fat Diary, Derry Girls etc - genuinely funny portrayals of teenagers that don't rely on the same old cheap #ladbanter. Definitely not that realistic lol but great all the same.

Categorically the best Netflix comedy of all time.

I was going to say 'show' but Daredevil/Jessica Jones exist.

I finished episode 5. I adored the episode about abortion, the character Sarah was  wanted to hug her, and wanted the pro-life campaigners to come around to a new way of thinking but that would've been too idealised  LOVE Lily, Eric, the swing band teacher (forever Gerald from Peep Show), Ola, Otis' mum, the caravan park owner and ofc Maeve. Jackson (and his family) is great as well.

Finished it

A few clumsy endings that made me worry they didn't think they'd get a second season and tried to wrap everything up. My heart aches for Maeve but it swells for Aimee

But Eric/Adam just made no sense really and I'm not sure I appreciate the idea that victims of gay bullying would or should just be so easily wooed by said bully's sudden coming out. I know bullies~have~hidden~depths~ but I do think it's a bit of a cliche, this idea of "he's picking on you because he likes you ;)" and just...idk it doesn't sit with me.

Also... military schools without the teen's consent (he's 17, not underage)... not still a thing, are they? :suspect:

Lily continued to be brilliant.

Spoilers Ahead

I finished this last night and ended up LOVING it. I was confused at the beginning because I had no idea what decade it was set in, and it felt like an unrealistic Americanised version of a British high school. The pessimist in me eye-rolled at the silliness earlier in the season, but that's mostly down to me being a bit of a snob and not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did.

The abortion episode was the turning point from liking the series to loving it. I thought it was really powerful and well done, and also executed a nice development regarding Maeve and Otis' relationship. Also, really ended up adoring (and binging...which is something I actually rarely do) the second half of the season. The Jackson-Maeve-Otis-Ola love square was well constructed and interesting. Glad they introduced Ola, so Otis didn't have his tongue wagging at Maeve all the time. idk whether the show intends for the viewer to want Maeve and Otis together, but I actually ended up liking Maeve and Jackson's (the Billy Ocean rendition was TOO cute) and Otis and Ola's relationships more. Especially after Otis done ****ed up with Eric in episode 5 because of his infatuation with Maeve.

The show did a good job handling teenage issues, especially regarding sex, which a lot of shows are afraid to delve into as much as this one did (perfect as Netflix show, too, since they do diversity so well). Made me feel really nostalgic and brought me back to how I felt about being gay at school, taboos in terms of sexual activities, and being around friends who are sexually active and feeling "behind" as it was put in the final episode. Also, really ended up liking the visuals in terms of the cinematography, costumes and title shots at the beginning of every episode, though. ALSO, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH :flutter: The dance to The Origin of Love at the dance was great. Was refreshing to watch a coming of age show where the producers got the taste and nuances of character so accurate.

In terms of the other characters, I honestly found Eric annoying at first but grew to love him. Adam was interesting, but I don't really like where they took his character with Eric. It felt too cliché, although it was nice to see a softer side to Adam at the very end. The actor playing Adam was also really good. The mean group were awful, but they were intended to be so they served a purpose. Eric punching the other gay guy was a highlight. Maeve's brother was hot af but such an arsehole. Loved exploring Jackson's family dynamic. Otis' mum was so gloriously annoying and liked her relationship with Jakub. Nobody beats these two icons, though:

Finished Season 2, I absolutely loved it and really enjoyed the freshness of the new characters, in particular Viv! Only new character (of significance) that I wasn't really keen on was Isaac.

The one thing that still annoys me about this show though is:
The Adam & Eric storyline. It's just so forced and does not fit at all. The whole reasoning for Eric being more compatible with Adam because his mum thinks he's more of himself around him just seems BS to me? Like I didn't notice any difference in behaviour between him with Adam and him with Rahim, other than him not liking musicals and laughing about dick posters??? I-

I liked the twist at the end of the finale, as it'll be interesting to see what happens with it next season.

I love this show so much, I slept on it ages ago because I watched it and as soon as it started there was a sex scene and my mum and dad were literally in the living room watching Dickinson's real deals

I binged series 1 and 2 in 3 days and absolutely adored it, Aimee was my favourite, she made me scream several times with her comments. Genuinely excited for another series as I think series 2 was actually as good as series 1 if not a bit better tbh and that ending...phew!

my only issue is Eric and Adam. Rahim was so much better for Eric imo and I hated how Eric treated him in the end of season 2.

Toy Soldier

I think the idea is that we'll see a drastically different Adam next season now that he's out (and even has friends :omgno: ) and I actually think his journey is one of the more interesting ones in the show. He managed to show tiny glimpses of the "real person stuck in the angry, depressed shell" in the last couple of episodes and I'm interested to see if the actor can pull off a realistic transformation.

Not here for the Isaac/Maeve storyline to be honest.

https://i.imgur.com/2QoNSml.jpg

Yawn. And it feels far too flimsy.

"Did you get my voicemail?"
"No... what voicemail?"
"Oh strange. Well, I left a voicemail and said..."

Like ... Who listens to their voicemail/expects anyone to listen to their voicemail? He'd just think she didn't get it?

ALSO it's 2020 and we're supposed to believe that Maeve doesn't have a fingerprint/pattern/code lock on her phone. Pff.

Eric: This is a real hurdle in our relationship :/

Eric storyline is dumb as **** but all the other characters were either fun (Otis/Ola/JEAN/Lily) or heartwrenching (Aimee/Maeve/Jackson) and we also got to see Anwar's ass so I'd say this has been an overall success

I finished the second season, I liked it and thought it was generally better than the first but one thing bothered me to no end.

It's so unrealistic that Maeve wouldn't have a passcode or a fingerprint locking her phone. It really bothered me that Wheechair Penn Badgley just managed to delete the message out of pure plot contrivance.

This is really bloody good, it might be one of my favourite shows...ever?

I’m angry at the ending though...

I feel like this show has turned me into a 15 year old girl shipping a fictitious romance but come on, man - enough with near-misses and cliffhangers and spoiled opportunities, just give the audience what they want with Otis and Maeve. You (the writers) can drag things out for too long :(

That storyline is the main reason I ended up binging this in four days :skull: I’m not happy...

p.s. god I miss sixth form

It’s frustrating because he’s clearly only been written in to act as another roadblock and facilitate *that* ending. At least the Ola “cliffhanger” from S1 was believable, and helped to develop Otis as a character, this just seems...unnecessary. Unfortunately he’s no doubt going to be around for a while, and I expect S3 will focus on him/Maeve. Sigh.

Also, you could see what was coming a mile off as soon as she put her phone down. A huge eye roll moment :bored:

It's so good, right? When I first heard of it I was sure it would be the same as all of the other high school drama shows but it's so different and enthralling!

It really is amazing! It’s FUNNY, sweet, cleverly written, feminist and nostalgic, with well-rounded and three dimensional characters

And it tackles important stories too. Aside from all the sweet Otis/Maeve scenes (of which there are many), the best and most poignant ones have to be the “it’s my vagina” assembly in S1 to the “we’re all getting the bus” one in S2

The problem with the phone thing is that it's clearly going to involve unrealistic writing... He'll assume she got the message and be sad she's ignored it, and decide she's not interested.

But... In reals... People miss voicemail all the time. He'd assume maybe she hadnt heard it and at least say tentatively "....... Did you get my message?" and she would say "no what message?" and that whole plot point would be moot.

Haha I actually find S3 the worst of the lot.
They built up Ruby and Otis which I really liked and was I actually thinking they had the balls to make them endgame as opposed to Otis and Maeve which at this stage is boring as ****. I genuinely feel Otis and Ruby have more chemistry. Ruby REALLY opened up as a character with the introduction of her dad and that.
Then after they break up the writers just forget Ruby exists??
Maeve was the best written character in season 1 and even season 2 but this season I found her awful boring? I was really digging Ruby this season :(
They ****ed up Eric this season, the fact he cheated on Raheem who was a comfortable gay man, for Adam who is not comfortable but is becoming comfortable with Adam this season..he then proceeds to cheat on Adam and blame HIM because HE isn't comfortable with being gay?? Aw they ruined Eric. I'm sort of shipping Adam and Raheem?
That whole fake out on Jean dying was like okay..then the fact that jakub isn't the baby daddy? Too soap opera-y for me
Anyways I have a few more issues I have with this season that will come back to me but those are the main three I didn't like.
Still tho, Fcuk the pain away scene was 10/10

I feel like the Eric storyline was a little problematic? I dunno. I don't want to speak for the gays or anything, but it seemed that the whole "he wants to be out and comfortably gay" thing was actually not what it was all about ... what he wanted was to be "on the scene", essentially living up to the stereotypical image that exists of gay men being, for want of a gentler way to put it, promiscuous partying ****boys. It had very little to do with how comfortable Adam is in being gay - he's just not the type of person who is EVER going to want to put on an orange suit and dance the night away in a club. He wants to train his little doggo, snuggle up with a boyfriend on the couch and have some hot chocolate. It came across not as Eric being mad that he's not "out enough" - but that he thinks he's "the wrong kind of gay" :umm2:.

I agree about Ruby to an extent, I don't think her and Otis made a particularly good pairing BUT they basically did half a season of character development (rounding her out into a real character, introducing her dad and the clear issues there, etc.) and then they just ... cut it short and turned her back into a caricature. A strange choice.

I fully agree about the baby-daddy twist, not a fan, that storyline was fine and had plenty more steam in it as it was with him as the dad. It didn't need that twist .
