View Full Version : Troye Sivan wonders: 'if I'd be more commercially successful if I wasn’t gay'

Troye Sivan has discussed the relationship between his sexuality and his commercial success to date as a pop star in a new interview.
Speaking on a podcast, the Youth singer said: ‘Part of me wonders sometimes if I would be more commercially successful if I wasn’t gay or not as “in your face gay”.
The star has scored two top 10 albums in the US – 2015’s Blue Neighbourhood and 2018’s Bloom. His EPs – 2014’s TRXYE and 2015’s Wild – also went top 10.
Troye made the comments on British singer and 2001 Pop Idol winner Will Young’s Homo Sapiens podcast.
‘We don’t have a queer Taylor Swift’
On it, Troye says: ‘I have a great management team and great label, and I haven’t had this conversation with anyone else in fear because I hate it, hate it, hate it when pop stars sound bitter, or blame any sort of lack of success on anything other than for themselves. I don’t want to come across like I’m saying that at all, but this just feels like a safe space where we can have an open conversation.’
He furthermore continued: ‘Part of me wonders sometimes if I would be more commercially successful if I wasn’t gay or not as “in your face gay”. I think we’re in a really interesting time in music right now where we are seeing more and more queer artists pop up, but we don’t have a queer Taylor Swift, we don’t have a queer Rihanna, or a queer Beyoncé.
‘It’s not there yet I don’t think, though it feels very exciting to be where we are, I still feel like there’s a really tall mountain to climb. Sometimes it can be frustrating because I’m giving my all and not having some humongous radio smash all over the world.’
‘Is the world actually ready?’
He also added: ‘100% could just be on the music, maybe the music just isn’t good enough, maybe the world is obsessed with hip hop right now and I’m making the furthest thing from hip hop. It could be a myriad other things, but a part of me wonders sometimes, is the world actually ready right now for what I’m trying to be?’

You’re a basic white twink that’s only famous because daddy is rich and bought you studio time and a record deal, if you were straight you’d have even less success because not even the gays would be checking for you

I thought he was more successful because Tyler Oakley is gay myself.

What I don't get is why gay people demand equality yet always bring up the gay card if anything isn't going their way...this cretin is the worst I've seen today, so far.

Dam so much hate, and pettiness. Take a step back from your keyboards and take a long hard look at yourselves.
Troye has released so many great songs and had made huge success with his music so step on back.

Why?
It's only really used by weirdo activists who think they're "reclaiming a slur", when to the majority of people it still is a slur. I don't get why some people add it to the end of LGBT, when it just means gay. There's no need for it!

This! Also has he never heard of Elton John or Freddie Mercury? Bitch please! And why do we need a gay Taylor Swift? Oh because he wants to be earning hundreds of millions instead of just a few millions.

Yeah, but, Queer is a cultural term, and that's a fact! There is queer music, queer literature, queer art, even, y'know, queer porn!

This! I’m reading Queer Theory atm!
It doesn’t really matter it’s still used as a slur...
As far as I’m concerned ‘queer’ is pretty much synonymous with LGBT
I know him as "that gay singer" and know none of his songs so really he should be thankful he's a twink!

it’s the same bull**** as ‘well if women want equality then they should...’ like as if equality is something that has to be earned rather than already given. it’s a stupid argument

Wow, just imagine how big they'd have gotten if the public thought they went to the fishmongers instead of the cheese market. They'd be internationally and intergenerationally loved and admired or something.
You’re very out of touch with your community if you don’t understand the word ‘queer’.
I'm okay with that, does the "gay community" even have a need anymore? Gays aren't a downtrodden underclass anymore lol. I feel more community with that tattooed weirdo I see on rock music night at the pub, than I do most of the gays from my local gaybar.

To be honest, in his specific instance, i dont think he’d be half as famous if he was straight. His fanbase came from YouTube and most of them probs would’ve cared less about a young effeminate straight kid.

hahaha, I don't think I'm particularly unique or "one of the good ones", everyone is different - I'm different to you, you're different to Ant, etc. I was just illustrating how I see the "gay community" as a little redundant.

The allegations made by Jesse describe a terrible event, and I hope those behind it get what's coming to them. But to say that's representative of the West as a whole is as silly as someone who says "The mozlum's r taken over" when they walk past a halal shop.

I've not seen that in day to day life, nor has anyone in my family or friends.

To say we aren’t a ‘downtrodden underclass’ is an extremely crude over-simplification. I have no idea what your experiences have been, but to say that there’s no need for a pro-LGBT movement is highly ignorant. And anyway, even if we did achieve equality, that doesn’t mean the community needn’t exist.
If you don’t want to identify with the community, fine, but don’t drag them down.
brat.

Why bring up the fact I'm on the right? That has nothing to do with anything, least of all gayness; even (most!) right wing politics are either indifferent or supportive toward homos.
