The local government of Rotterdam has decided to name all new streets in the city after women and minorities after complaints by some local politicians that the current names are too male and too white.

The Dutch city’s government announced that it would be accepting the proposal to make the city’s street names more “diverse” a year after the initiative was put forth by left-wing party Democrats 66 (D66), the GreenLeft, and the Labour party, Dutch newspaper Telegraaf reports.

Councillor Nadia Arsieni, of the D66 party, was the one to initially recommend the proposal and said she was happy the local government had accepted it saying, “A sample showed that a large number of the streets were named after men of Western origin. That does not fit in the Rotterdam of today.”

Yes, awful decision, if we changed every street and road name that doesn't fit in with how things are today where would we be

What's wrong with being too male and too White? Why is that seen as something bad that needs to be changed?

you see quite happy with the idea of changing the names of streets that have been so named for centuries? I can see Oxford Street being renamed to Diane Abbot Way if this thing gathers legs :skull:

i can perfectly understand being more creative with new street names, but renaming old ones is just stupidity.

I'm honestly indifferent to the whole thing, it's a street name. However street names change all the time and if they were to do this in England it wouldn't be the first big renaming scheme (see mid 19th and early 20th century)

Generally street names in the main remain the same and if they are changed it is generally due to some information about some history about the street coming forward not that the street name is not diverse! Cities are expanding all the time and the new sections should of course reflect the evolution of the City

I suggest they ask the people who live there, who have grown up there, whether they want their place names changed to fit in with a minority group. Why is it so toxic for the host country to enjoy and continue with its own culture because presumably, that was one of the things that attracted the newcomers. If not, everywhere is going to be like the East End of London... with almost the whole indigenous community having moved out to a neighbouring county.
