Amnesty International has a “toxic work culture” with widespread bullying, public humiliation, nepotism, discrimination and overwork, according to a report.

The independent review — commissioned after two staff suicides last year — found a bitter “us versus them” split between employees and management that was causing “significant damage” to the human rights organisation.

The review team said Amnesty was in a “state of emergency” that threatened the credibility of its work.

Many workers told of 'discrimination on the basis of race and gender and in which women, staff of colour, and LGBTQI [people] were targeted or treated unfairly'.

The report added: 'There were multiple reports of managers belittling staff in meetings, deliberately excluding certain staff from reporting, or making demeaning, menacing comments like, "You’re s***!" or, "You should quit! If you stay in this position, your life will be a misery."

'Others discussed this issue more generally, reporting that bullying and public humiliation were routinely used by management at all levels.

Charities are notoriously hard to work for because lots of people above you think themselves so good, so understanding, so virtuous, so heartrendingly concerned... anyone who they believe isn't as good and virtuous as them is worthless.
