Behind the legacy of America's blackface
Blackface has a history of perpetuating offensive and racist stereotypes of African Americans dating back more than 200 years in the United States.

On social media, many criticised the design for invoking such stereotypes.

Luxury fashion brand Gucci has withdrawn a woollen jumper from sale after the item was criticised for "resembling blackface."

The black "balaclava jumper" covered the lower half of the face and featured a red cut-out around the mouth.

The item prompted a backlash on social media by users who claimed the design was offensive.

In a statement, Gucci apologised for any offence caused and said it would be removed from sale.

The brand said it would turn the incident "into a powerful learning moment for the Gucci team" and was committed to increasing diversity

More to the point though, why is it insulting the way people look?.

Do you find black faces and red lipstick offensive?

the advert was designed for controversy. They could have chosen any colour other than black for the ad and didnt. That says it all

Firstly, you’re not funny and secondly it’s insulting black people in general. Some might not be offended by it but I can see why a lot of people don’t like it. I’m sure you’re aware of what a minstrel show is

The minstrel show, or minstrelsy, was an American form of entertainment developed in the early 19th century. Each show consisted of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music performances that depicted people specifically of African descent. The shows were performed by white people in make-up or blackface for the purpose of playing the role of black people. There were also some African-American performers and all-black minstrel groups that formed and toured under the direction of white people. Minstrel shows lampooned black people as dim-witted,[1] lazy,[1] buffoonish,[1][2] superstitious, and happy-go-lucky.[1]

I'm well aware of the minstrels yes..both the black and the white ones.

I am not trying to be funny but I just don't get the offence, it's like saying black people are ugly if you find that offensive...now black people are probably the most beautiful humans on earth, big strong teeth, wide smiles etc.....

So my theory is people who are offended by this are also offended by black faces.

Firstly...It’s sh1t...awful...ghastly.

But honestly to get upset about it is just silly. It looks nothing like a persons skin or a minstrel and it’s only covering the bottom of the face.
People just love being offended by bollocks these days.

They could have just changed the colour of it though if black’s a banned colour to use now.

In colder climes like parts of North America this type of garment can be very useful to keep you from getting frostbite

but cheaper alternatives are available and probably in better wool

Ah there's a difference between a ski mask and this thing in the OP with the big red lips etc but anyway I have no doubt Gucci knew exactly what they were doing anyway

So let me get this straight... it's not actually meant to be blackface, it doesn't cover the whole face... so is actually completely different from that... but just in case someone, somewhere, might have an issue with it, we're banning it.

FFS, make it a different colour if people are so touchy. Because while people are wasting energy on this non-story, there are real injustices going on in the world.

You could be right.Alot of brands are wise to the fact that they can use the snowflake generation as a marketing resource.Light the blue touch paper and wait for the publicity.
As for ski masks. It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if someone called them blackface or some other nonsense.

Bit of a waste of money though, to make something to then have it removed from the shelves...and the old saying any publicity is good publicity just don't wash these days...specially not when it's an accusation of racism.

I just don't believe a company like Gucci would have no employee working there who might have said "ummm lets just think about this for a second" can you just imagine all the people who clicked into their site to see the item and then while they were there decided to have a quick look around? It's free advertising

these things always go to test groups of the general public before release. There is no doubt they knew exactly what reaction it would get

Absolutely, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd actually had a meeting to think up what they could do that would cause an outrage like that

The colour is what makes me believe Gucci knew exactly what they wanted it to look like. Nothing more than a bit of attention seeking and free advertising for them.
