How do you know if she's a racist or not? You don't know her.
And BTW I can't stand them either, but I can see she was joking by her reaction on the transcript.

Saying a racist word doesn't make you racist, if it was intended to be an insult, then yes, it would be racism, this was just a case of stupidity on her part, and I'm sure she'll suffer disproportionately for it.

"In discussing what she had said, Charley and Nicky agreed that they were not personally offended".
Exactly why would Nicky have been offended? Are her adoptive parents black?

So I can't be offended if someone calls a gay friend of mine a 'f*ggot'? You can be offended by something even if it doesn't directly affect you!!!!!

Oh please don't be silly.
It wasn't racially motivated, they were dancing... she made a comment, ok it wasn't the best word to use live on national telly but it happened. Charley wasn't offended, and with her being black i feel she should have had the final say.
That being said, I’m not condoning her behavior and feel maybe BB acted swiftly and efficiently for the good of the shows reputation.

It wasn't racist at all. She was just repeating some sort of 'lingo' she will have heard as a term of endearment.
I'm glad someone can say this word without a shred of malice, it's just a shame ignorant people can't understand the difference between 'racism' and 'linguistics'.

Emily was naively stupid rather than racially malicious having just read the transcript.....I'm no racist and wouldn't tolerate it........I think she should have been warned and not evicted as Charley and Nicky were surprised but not offended.....I'm Irish descent and I wouldn't take offence at someone calling me a 'Paddy'......Jade Goody was vindictive, malicious, cruel etc and greatly offended yet she got no reprisals in the house (obviously she got her just desserts outside)......But now Emily will forever more be known as the girl evicted for racial behaviour, which if you have an open mind she was not......But some will latch on to the slightest comment no matter how it was .said and make it the worst scenario imaginable......Black people will know real racist comments from naivety and stupity.....They should have asked Charley, Nicky and shabnam their thoughts on it and also asked them what punishment they thought appropriate including eviction........Just my thoughts :cloud:

You can't call people who may be offended by the word "ignorant". People are different. You may not be offended, but somebody else may be. It does not necessarily make them ignorant.

god people were latching on to the Indie comment....now look what they have......
I'm still pissed off that Charley is allowed to say the offensive word "because it was about herself" and not be treated the same way.
what A load of Bullllllllll
the word is either offensive or not....so if 2 people use it...no matter which context it's in they should both be treated the same way.

Emily is a not racist. She was neither mad, or threatening Charley, they were all having a joke. Emily said it as a joke, and it was accepted as a joke. It would only be racist if a black person, Charley, took it as an offence. Which she clearly didn't, because she called herself one. It's used everywhere today anyway, if it's racist then half of the world are racists.

Being offended by something doesn't give you justification to brand someone a 'racist'.

Thats waht i mean. the word N****r is used in nearly every rap song and is said everywhere. if people dont find it offensive in songs.... if you say it as a joke and no one is bothered there is really not much problem. its up to charley really if she took offense,

Hardly half the world. And anyway, the point is that it's not acceptable whoever says it loosely, and C4 being watched by so many needs to address this. You can't use an argument saying 'oh such and such does it, so I did it' - that's hardly a basis for an argument; it's what you'd call a 'tu quoque' argument. The point is that it shouldn't be said so loosely, and the fact that was on national TV drew more attention it.
Anyway, since it's early days, I'd just rather more housemates came in and stuff so we can move on.

I kind of stretched the half the world bit lmao.
But still, you see the word in all these rap songs, people call each other it, it's used a lot where I live, yet no one takes offence or finds it horrible.

It's just different peoples' levels of tolerance. There though the context may well be different, and it's not said in front of so many who could be offended.
And I'm glad it's not half the world, I wouldn't be able to live in it otherwise.

Nor ignorant. Though, people who are merely offended were never accused of being ignorant.
I'll reiterate my point. People who call Emily 'racist', are ignorant.

Erm.... when i heard it on the radio i thought a new black guy came in and she said it to charley about him thats why i was so shocked....
But now i dont think its as bad because she said it jokingly but it is still very wrong to even use the word.

Of course not. The evidence shows that Emily is secure enough in her views to use a controversial word in jest because she intended no malice. Were she a true 'racist', she would have endeavored to avoid that word at all costs, infront of all those cameras and in lieu of the CBB race row, I'm sure.

I think most people agree that it was a 'bad decision' to use the word.
I also think most people have the intelligence not to simplify it as racism when they know the correct conext in which it was said.

I never said she was racist. I disagreed with the point that you said people who say she is racist are ignorant. Everyone does not have the same views as you. Some people do not find it racist, but some people do. Just different views, not ignorance.
