Sam Smith has come out as non-binary saying he feels "like a woman sometimes" and has considered having a sex change.
He was speaking to actress Jameela Jamil about fame, body image and confidence.
"I've always had a little bit of a war going within my body and my mind," Sam said in the interview.
"I do think like a woman sometimes, in my head. Sometimes I've questioned 'Do I want a sex change?'
"It's something I still think about, like, 'Do I want to?'"
Many non-binary people don't identify as either male or female and use the pronouns they or them instead of he or she.

Sam says listening to conversations about being non-binary made him realise that was how he identified.
"I'm not male or female, I think I flow somewhere in between. It's all on the spectrum," he says.
He added that he had always resented being "feminine in many ways" and describes being non-binary as being "your own special creation".

What does this mean? What does 'thinking like a woman' entail? I must question the hypocrisy of some of these people who long to be accepted but so happily feed into gender-based stereotypes.

But.... but.... that's the opposite of non-binary.
Non-binary identify as NEITHER and don't subscribe to male/female pronouns/sterotypes/expectations etc. He quite clearly states several time he feels like a woman/female???

To be fair he says he SOMETIMES feels like a woman and sometimes a man but in theory, flitting between the two would be very much "binary"... Just both of the binary pair. He's gender-quantum? Hmmm.

My thoughts too Mock! He's been irrelevant for quite some time now, and is just using this to stay in the press.
I am literally so pro-gender expression, but suddenly Sam Smith made me feel transphobic.
I'm hoping it's just bc it's him, bc I kinda understand what he's saying.

The whole idea of 'feeling like a man/woman' thing seems to be a general mistake people make when talking about trans people, but the truth is, being trans is about wanting to feel more like ourselves. Be that male or female, most of us don't want attention, we don't want to be different, we just want to live our lives as who we truly are.

Sam Smith changes pronouns to they/them
Sam Smith has asked fans to use the pronouns "they/them", not "he/him", after coming out as non-binary.
The pop star wrote on Instagram: "After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I've decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out."
The singer added: "I've been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think."
Six months ago, Smith said they did not feel male or female, but "I flow somewhere in between".
On Friday, the 27-year-old said they had been "surrounded by people that support me in this decision".
They wrote: "I understand there will be many mistakes and mis-gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you."
The singer went on to say: "I am at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non binary but I can't wait for the day that I am. So for now I just want to be VISIBLE and open."
At last week's GQ Men of the Year Awards, Smith walked the red carpet wearing high heels, posting: "I'd never ever ever be able to be myself like this in front of the industry or anyone."

Good for them I guess but given their history, I can't help but think they're using it as a gimmick to stay relevant which is an aggravating thought since doing so undermines the struggle for so many people.
I'll believe people are entitled to their beliefs but I've never really believed non-binary to be a thing. It's just the desire to smash gender stereotypes and roles (which is a great thing) wrapped up in a pretentious package. Be androgynous as you like, wear what you want, reject what society expects of you, I'm all for that but I've always had a bit of an issue with treating non-binary as it's own gender because surely it's the opposite? It's not a gender, it's the pure rejection of gender as a concept.

in a nutshell
I knew a biological girl at uni who identified as a boy, which was fine because they kinda looked like one anyway, but then decided to be genderless and would get pissed when people didnt say 'them' etc and would rant about the struggles of non-binery people and I just kinda lost interest and didnt bother with that person again.. I think they were just a very unhappy lost person

My question is how would you know that they were non binary in order to address them in the correct way. Will they have to inform any new person they meet immediately, seems a whole load of hassle, personally doesn't bother me what people identify as but I can see issue with this of people being labelled bigots because there is no way of knowing the person is identifying as non binary unless its the first thing that comes out of their mouth when they meet you, obviously its okay for Sam Smith because he is relatively famous but what about poor Bloggs in the street

I think it's a load of rubbish .
Sam Smith is male & he's been called HE & HIM all the time & all of a sudden he wants to feel special & wants a new label. I'm not calling him something different .
How exactly can you call an individual "they" & "them" , it's ridiculous you only say that if it's a group of people or something.
And I've noticed some of these "non binary" people pick & choose when to be offended.
Sam Smith can say he feels like a woman or is in touch with his feminine side etc ,but he is still a man .
If someone wants to identify as a table or bench ,what do we call them ?? :bored: .

I think this "non binary" thing is a trending label for a lot of people and it's used for the sake of it , if you called them male or female they probably wouldn't even care until they decide to suddenly be offended to make a silly point :bored:
I think it's just confusing things further with the whole gender neutral & unisex thing getting mixed in . And people already get misgendered , so if they don't want to be identified as either then that just muddles it up even more

Meh. I think anyone has the right to be referred to however they want, in principle. I think they/them poses a slight problem because those pronouns already have a specific meaning for collective/plural... So also using it to refer to someone individually unnecessarily complicates things? In normal usage if you hear they/them you assume that multiple people are the subject of the statement .

I'm not calling an individual "they" or "them" it sounds stupid . And I will continue to call Sam Smith HE & HIM .
I've heard people call non binary people "they " & "them" & it sounds like bad grammar or as if it's about a group of people as in plural .
The use of the singular 'they' dates back to 14th century English, but go off I guess

Yes ‘they’ or ‘them’ is a plural, minefield for anyone learning a language especially when you can’t identify by just looking at the person
There was a guy in Sunday politics today who referred to Sam Smith as a hero, then he backtracked to say well he couldn’t actually call them that because that inferred they were male, so even the woke people have issues with it

You could also argue that the word "Hero" get's thrown around , when the original meaning of the word was someone who's done something outstanding ,brave and usually risked their life for others in a selfless way.
Then with the whole sexism thing, people tried to call Female role models "heroine" ,but i don't think we always need to be soo specific about male & female pronouns when it comes to that as a female can still be called a hero i would say .
So i just think of Sam smith as an attention seeker who's clinging to another label :bored: .
