[The new take on the classic human-shaped biscuit will wave goodbye to its usual "man" moniker when it arrives in September.]

The first to do it
So clever Money making idea

How longer before we lose the word ginger.

Oh god who cares

So bored of these kinds of threads constantly trying to detract from real issues that minorities face from bigots

And further to that before anyone even starts, nobody complained about it being a gingerbread MAN this is something the COOP have done entirely off of their own initiative

Dear sir, you can think this idea is pointless and silly without detracting from real issues.

Don't see the problem with this really..tbf gingerbread men are just gingerbread people anyway, have never seen a dick on one or anything anyway, so no clear sex. So, meh.

I hate the Co-op. My local one is sooooo depressing I only go there if there really is no other choice. Their stuff is expensive and I've never been in a Co-op that didn't smell faintly.

It's a shame that it's getting to the point where no one can say man or woman, without someone getting upset. I mean, probably 0.001% of their customers may have gender/identity issues, so let's cater for that extreme minority and **** the rest of you.

Sheriff asked how much longer we can use the word 'ginger'. I'd say, forever. Old people, fat people and ginger people are the last groups of people it's okay to ridicule so long as they're white and have no gender issues.

Yeah co-ops today are vastly overpriced. Mind, ours does a deal where you get like 6 frozen things (usually fish/meat x2, some kind of potato product x2, a few frozen veg and some icecream..) for a fiver which is pretty decent. Everything else though...like medium baguette for 2 quid?! **** off

Edit. Actually thinking a bit more about this, my 6 year old has asked for 'gingerbread girls' a fair few times, maybe the co-op has picked up on stuff like that? IDK. I just buy gingerbread men and tell her they are gingerbread girls and shes none the wiser, tends to ask why they aren't wearing dresses which brings on the whole 'girls don't have to wear dreses, you only have dresses as you ask for them constantly and you have loads of trousers, so these gingerbread girls are wearing trousers!' spiel..which is tiring tbh over and over. Stereotypes have a lot to answer for D:

I have never ever seen gingerbread women.

These days I tend to get one of the 'decorate your own' boxes in morrisons and let them make their own gingerbread person...that way they can do what they like with it and there isn't moaning (except when one uses all the ****ing sprinkles  )

As I pointed out the other day ,the only group of people you are allowed to insult are straight white people

...gingerbread people/persons are not a new thing so the Co Op are a bit behind with that but I guess it’s just as much about the naming of them as well which they are asking the public to become a part of...this is a bit like the ugly duckling thing...it isn’t a race, it’s chocolate..?...this isn’t a gender it’s a biscuit...

...but personally I haven’t heard them described as gingerbread men for a long time...they’re biscuits, they don’t have a gender...

I always call them gingerbread men.

This made me think of jelly babies. My Dad always used to say, he preferred boy jelly babies because you got a bit extra.

Our local independent bakery sells loads of them the kids call them gingerbread men when they ask for them and that's what the staff call them as well.

There's no suggestion in the article they're responding to a complaint.

Sounds more like they're jumping on the "in trend" for some publicity.

perhaps a novel concept, but why not simply call it gingerbread, because that's what it is

I mean, this whole idea is inherently dumb and just being used to pander, however by doing so, they’re creating an issue that doesn’t exist, I’ve never seen or heard of anyone complaining about the rights of gingerbread women, it’s ridiculous

Well, it's more likely to be for the attention/promotion as they know it's a "thing".

I'd be very surprised if they had a genuine concern for customers with gender issues taking offence.

Who has been harmed because a gingerbread biscuit was described as male? That that's now somehow wrong? Talk about first world problems. I want a biscuit but I don't want one that's been misgendered.

How do other countries cope with their languages making some of their words male, some female and some neutral? Shouldn't we just change all words to neutral?

Omg I didn't even think of that. The French must be pulling their hair out.

Either that or it's only Brits that moan about such inconsequential things.

Eh, who cares.

Let people vote with their wallets - if people get their knickers in a twist over it and purposely buy gingerbread men elsewhere, then Co-Op will lose business. If people agree with the move, they'll sell more. Or (the most likely option) no-one normal would much notice, and the wrappers would be discarded without a second thought whatever was printed on them.

do you know omen lgbtq rights group that’s complained about this? any lgbtq+ activists? honestly this problem never existed because even if there is a group of people who found ginger bread men offensive they’ve must’ve gone straight to the co-op about it because this is a first i’ve heard about this

The Co op probably did it as a stunt to improve gingerbread man sales because does anyone actually buy those things?
