Ordinary people trying to get to work so they can pay their mortgage or their rent... Held up by this bunch of time-wasters. Surely it would be better to get people onside, rather than make them resent you? I see now why they did this on a work day though... it looked like none of them were employable, unless they're selling quinoa and mung beans to other unemployables.

The silly billies don't do themselves any favours, stopping people who need to earn a living from getting to work, the government wont be harmed by it and what about the environment when the cars are piled up and leaking emissions plus the products that will be used to clean the paint off the buildings will not be enviromently friendly ,and what will people smashing windows achieve ? absolutely nothing, maybe they should find a better way of protesting.

Northern Monkey

Maybe they should go and protest in Tiananmen square since China is just going through its industrial revolution and has the biggest carbon footprint on the planet.
Whatever else we do here is futile with that going on.

Oh stop it. I've never heard anyone refer to refugees as human trash. I know you've made up your mind I'm some kind of Thatcher clone, but the truth is a lot of my work in the middle East deals with refugees coming to the UK, particularly from refugee camps in Jordan.

Africa IS a sh1thole for the most part.

It's clear to me SR, that you just can't have a debate about anything political. You're all about 'whataboutism'. Any time the Left is mentioned... you hit back with yeah, well whatabout....[something on the FAR right]. It's tedious.

The Tories are not on the far Right.

The Labour Party are not communists. Although it's fair to say they are further left under Corbyn than at any time in recent history. He's a proper Stalin fan, old Jeremy.

Considering how close to a precipice we are and how many lives climate change could end if we fall over the precipice, a broken window doesn't matter in the slightest.

There was a book once called SuperFreakonomics sequel to Freakonomics that said that global warming could be combated by putting sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, that would dim the effect of the sun and cool the planet, for relatively low cost.

I don't know how realistic it is.

It's funny because people are talking here about the issue because of the disruptive tactics the protesters use. So it shows that those tactics work to some extent. But it is unfair because it sets a precedent that if anyone wants to get their cause on the news all they need to do is cause disruption.

It's what happens when a big volcano erupts. :pipe2:

I read another study by two engineers who work for Google, who researched renewable energy technologies for years, and basically concluded that current renewable technology had no chance of stopping warming, and the only hope was to invest a lot of money in research to find a new cheap low carbon energy technology.

https://ai.google/research/pubs/pub43326.pdf

The other option would for people around the world - not just in one country - to radically alter their lifestyles. It would mean emerging economies being kept back also, and this is all very unlikely to happen.

Its all very well screeching that the government needs to do something, we need to take personal responsibility for instance how many Easter Eggs will people consume this weekend full of palm oil and packaged in plastic ..

I agree each and everyone of us need to take some responsibility,we cannot blame everything on the government , it is our choice on what we but and how we dispose of rubbish, these people would do better by going out and trying to help instead of just shouting their mouths off,I agree wholeheartedly with the cause, but disrupting the country is not the right way to do it.

It's what happens when a big volcano erupts. :pipe2:

I guess that would be my point. Imagine what a volcano eruption does to its surrounding atmosphere and to the air quality for people and animals living in the area... then consider what that would do to the entire planet and it's inhabitants. Makes no sense. Unless you're going for a survival of the fittest mass world population cull... that's a whole other store though

Your last statement is the real truth of it.

Er....

Just seen images of two of them stood on a train to hold it up.

Why are they targeting public transport if they’re worried about global warming?

Surely they want more people on public transport rather than in cars.

Yeah this seems odd. We should be encouraging MORE people to use public transport surely, if thinking of the environment? :suspect:

I don't really get what disrupting loads of peoples lives gains the protestors, besides hugely pissing a lot of people off and potsntially turning them further away from their 'cause'. But, I guess they have their reasons

Still not understanding why they are disrupting pubic transport. When public transport is a good thing for the environment really, a hell of a lot better than families with 4 cars on the road between them and such. Unless they have the very unrealistic goal of noone using transport at all besides bikes and walking? In which case, maybe countryside villages and that would be a better place for protest, as people will ALWAYS have to commute long distances too and from London. Longer commutes than its reasonable to ask them to do on a bike/on foot most of the time too.

I don't know what they expect the government to do ,they cant suddenly stop it, it's up to each and every one of us to do our bit, when you have the big guns like China and the USA billowing out all sorts a little protest in London isn't going to make a dent, the selfish sods have caused additions to the emissions ,get them on the beaches picking up litter etc if they really want to do some good, the government are already doing things ,we are all responsible not just them, or send them to China.

I imagine you'll be far more sick of the sea level when it rises to the point that you no longer have a home.

But, how is the current behaviour helping? I don't get it. Still getting stuck on the disrupting buses/trains. I can understand trying to disrupt heathrow as air travel is generally quite unnecesary (however, I did once miss out on a few days holiday because of protestors once,I had not felt rage like it tbh given I had saved for the holiday for 5 years...) but this stopping trains and that, when they should be encouraging people to use trains/public transprt in general

Also, I kind of think, even if every person in this country stopped travel, stopped using plastic, stopped using aerosols and that, it wouldn't even slightly dent whats coming. So you can disrupt UK peoples lives all you want, it won't make even a tiny bit of difference when the rest of the world goes on as normal.

I genuinely think we are just ****ed regardless, as china and such are not going to stop, and anywhere else is totally a drop in the (rising) ocean without those joining in.

I am finding the photos of all the protestors rubbish funny in a way though. Especially when they are doing graffitti with aerosol, many seem to be keeping their stuff in plastic bags and using disposable water bottles, that kind of thing, which they then seem to be just dumping on the streets rather than even using a bin! So, surely, they cannot expect everyone lse to change when they seem to refuse to, when they are meant to be more passionate about this stuff than others!

TLDR; Its kind of past the point of no return with global warming. And noone will ever get anywhere while china and such keep pumping so much crap into the atmosphere. Pessimistic, yeah, but realistic. I figure we will blow ourselves up with nukes or something long before global warming reaches its peak. Humans are self destructive creatures. And we want to take the world down with us.

Also not sure how true this is as havent searched yet, but apparently one of the worst things you can ever do for the environment is reproduce... Can just imagine the reactions if we did take on a 'one/no children' limit D:

Keep the environmentalists away from those lethal car fumes.

The drivers, of course, will live shorter, less healthy lives.

Yes,I bet all their cars are parked up:hehe:

The thing is.They’re targeting the wrong government.

Carbon emissions in the UK are 38% lower than they were in 1990.
That’s a fall from around 600 million tonnes of CO2 (MtCO2) in 1990 to around 367MtCO2 two years ago, according to new analysis by Carbon Brief.
The decline is largely due to a cleaner electricity mix based on gas and renewables instead of coal as well as falling energy demand across homes, businesses and industry.

UK greenhouse gas emissions down 2.5 percent as renewables hit record
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain’s greenhouse gas emissions fell 2.5 percent in 2018, dropping for a sixth straight year but more slowly than before, as record output of renewable power ate away at coal-fired generation, government data showed on Thursday.

Analysis: UK carbon emissions in 2017 fell to levels last seen in 1890
Carbon Brief analysis shows the UK’s CO2 emissions from fossil fuels fell by 2.6% in 2017, driven by a 19% decline in coal use.
This follows on the heels of a larger 5.8% drop in CO2 in 2016, which saw a record 52% drop in coal use. The UK’s total CO2 emissions are currently 38% below 1990 levels and are now as low as emissions were back in 1890.

They’re also targeting British people who recycle and do a lot more than people in many other countries.
All they’re doing is pissing off the wrong people.
