Israel Folau: Australian rugby player breaks silence over homophobic Instagram post and says he’s willing to quit

The 30-year-old will walk away from rugby union if that is ‘God’s plan’ after his employers issued their intention to terminate his contract following a homophobic Instagram post

Folau’s inclusion of homosexuals in the post was the latest in a string of anti-gay remarks, having claimed in 2017 that gay people will go to hell unless they accept God and repeating the message in April 2018 when he said they will end up in “HELL unless they repent”.

The latest episode breached the strict social media guidelines that he agreed to in the contract that he signed with Rugby Australia and the New South Wales Rugby Union last year, and led to their joint decision that they intent to terminate his contract.

But in breaking his silence on the matter, Folau stood by both his Instagram post and his beliefs, and said that he is prepared to quit the sport if he has to.

England and Saracens player Billy Vunipola has defended shamed Australian rugby international Israel Folau in a lengthy Instagram post in which he claims “man was made for woman to procreate”.

The 26-year-old will face a meeting with the Rugby Football Union over his support for Folau, who claimed on Wednesday that “Hell awaits” for ““Drunks, Homosexuals, Adulterers, Liars, Fornicators, Thieves, and Atheists” in a religious-based tirade.

Evangelical Alliance backs Vunipola over controversial Instagram post

Peter Lynas, a spokesperson for the Evangelical Alliance – the oldest and largest evangelical unity movement in the UK – defends Vunipola’s position and asks whether religious beliefs are also being accommodated by rugby’s drive for diversity.

“Billy Vunipola has expressed the view of evangelical Christians on marriage and quoted the Bible in the process,” Lynas told Press Association Sport

“He made clear in his post that he was far from perfect himself and doesn’t hate anyone. For this he is now being condemned and threatened with disciplinary action.

“Is he being disciplined for quoting scripture? For holding orthodox Christian beliefs or just for expressing them? Do rugby players have freedom of religion or is this another faith-free zone?

Opinions and beliefs are to be challenged, freedom of speech goes both ways. It's not a shield to defend bigots from criticism.
