MARK CERNY WOULD like to get one thing out of the way right now: The videogame console that Sony has spent the past four years building is no mere upgrade.
You’d have good reason for thinking otherwise. Sony and Microsoft both extended the current console generation via a mid-cycle refresh, with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 spawning mini-sequels (the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro). “The key question,” Cerny says, “is whether the console adds another layer to the sorts of experiences you already have access to, or if it allows for fundamental changes in what a game can be.”
The answer, in this case, is the latter. It’s why we’re sitting here, secreted away in a conference room at Sony’s headquarters in Foster City, California, where Cerny is finally detailing the inner workings of the as-yet-unnamed console that will replace the PS4.
SENIOR CORRESPONDENT PETER RUBIN COVERS CULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR WIRED.
If history is any guide, it will eventually be dubbed the PlayStation 5. For now, Cerny responds to that question—and many others—with an enigmatic smile. The “next-gen console,“ as he refers to it repeatedly, won’t be landing in stores anytime in 2019. A number of studios have been working with it, though, and Sony recently accelerated its deployment of devkits so that game creators will have the time they need to adjust to its capabilities.
As he did with the PS4, Cerny acted as lead system architect for the coming system, integrating developers’ wishes and his own gaming hopes into something that’s much more revolution than evolution. For the more than 90 million people who own PS4s, that's good news indeed. Sony’s got a brand-new box.
A TRUE GENERATIONAL shift tends to include a few foundational adjustments. A console’s CPU and GPU become more powerful, able to deliver previously unattainable graphical fidelity and visual effects; system memory increases in size and speed; and game files grow to match, necessitating larger downloads or higher-capacity physical media like discs.
PlayStation’s next-generation console ticks all those boxes, starting with an AMD chip at the heart of the device. (Warning: some alphabet soup follows.) The CPU is based on the third generation of AMD’s Ryzen line and contains eight cores of the company’s new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. The GPU, a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family, will support ray tracing, a technique that models the travel of light to simulate complex interactions in 3D environments. While ray tracing is a staple of Hollywood visual effects and is beginning to worm its way into high-end processors and Nvidia's recently announced RTX line, no game console has been able to manage it. Yet.
Ray tracing’s immediate benefits are largely visual. Because it mimics the way light bounces from object to object in a scene, reflective surfaces and refractions through glass or liquid can be rendered much more accurately, even in real-time, leading to heightened realism. According to Cerny, the applications go beyond graphic implications. “If you wanted to run tests to see if the player can hear certain audio sources or if the enemies can hear the players’ footsteps, ray tracing is useful for that,” he says. “It's all the same thing as taking a ray through the environment.”
The AMD chip also includes a custom unit for 3D audio that Cerny thinks will redefine what sound can do in a videogame. “As a gamer,” he says, “it's been a little bit of a frustration that audio did not change too much between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. With the next console the dream is to show how dramatically different the audio experience can be when we apply significant amounts of hardware horsepower to it.”
The result, Cerny says, will make you feel more immersed in the game as sounds come at you from above, from behind, and from the side. While the effect will require no external hardware—it will work through TV speakers and visual surround sound—he allows that the “gold standard” will be headphone audio.
One of the words Cerny uses to describe the audio may be a familiar to those who follow virtual reality: presence, that feeling of existing inside a simulated environment. When he mentions it, I ask him about PlayStation VR, the peripheral system that has sold more than 4 million units since its 2016 release. Specifically, I ask if there will be a next-gen PSVR to go alongside this next console. “I won't go into the details of our VR strategy today,” he says, “beyond saying that VR is very important to us and that the current PSVR headset is compatible with the new console.”
So. New CPU, new GPU, the ability to deliver unprecedented visual and audio effects in a game (and maybe a PSVR sequel at some point). That’s all great, but there’s something else that excites Cerny even more. Something that he calls “a true game changer,” something that more than anything else is “the key to the next generation.” It’s a hard drive.
THE LARGER A game gets—last year’s Red Dead Redemption 2 clocked in at a horse-choking 99 gigabytes for the PS4—the longer it takes to do just about everything. Loading screens can last minutes while the game pulls what it needs to from the hard drive. Same goes for “fast travel,” when characters transport between far-flung points within a game world. Even opening a door can take over a minute, depending on what’s on the other side and how much more data the game needs to load. Starting in the fall of 2015, when Cerny first began talking to developers about what they’d want from the next generation, he heard it time and time again: I know it’s impossible, but can we have an SSD?
Solid-state drives have been available in budget laptops for more than a decade, and the Xbox One and PS4 both offer external SSDs that claim to improve load times. But not all SSDs are created alike. As Cerny points out, “I have an SSD in my laptop, and when I want to change from Excel to Word I can wait 15 seconds.” What’s built into Sony’s next-gen console is something a little more specialized.
To demonstrate, Cerny fires up a PS4 Pro playing Spider-Man, a 2018 PS4 exclusive that he worked on alongside Insomniac Games. (He’s not just an systems architect; Cerny created arcade classic Marble Madness when he was all of 19 and was heavily involved with PlayStation and PS2 franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and Ratchet and Clank.) On the TV, Spidey stands in a small plaza. Cerny presses a button on the controller, initiating a fast-travel interstitial screen. When Spidey reappears in a totally different spot in Manhattan, 15 seconds have elapsed. Then Cerny does the same thing on a next-gen devkit connected to a different TV. (The devkit, an early “low-speed” version, is concealed in a big silver tower, with no visible componentry.) What took 15 seconds now takes less than one: 0.8 seconds, to be exact.
That’s just one consequence of an SSD. There’s also the speed with which a world can be rendered, and thus the speed with which a character can move through that world. Cerny runs a similar two-console demonstration, this time with the camera moving up one of Midtown’s avenues. On the original PS4, the camera moves at about the speed Spidey hits while web-slinging. “No matter how powered up you get as Spider-Man, you can never go any faster than this,” Cerny says, “because that's simply how fast we can get the data off the hard drive.” On the next-gen console, the camera speeds uptown like it’s mounted to a fighter jet. Periodically, Cerny pauses the action to prove that the surrounding environment remains perfectly crisp. (While the next-gen console will support 8K graphics, TVs that deliver it are few and far between, so we’re using a 4K TV.)
What else developers will be able to do is a question Cerny can’t answer yet, because those developers are still figuring it all out—but he sees the SSD as unlocking an entirely new age, one that upends the very tropes that have become the bedrock of gaming. “We're very used to flying logos at the start of the game and graphic-heavy selection screens," he says, "even things like multiplayer lobbies and intentionally detailed loadout processes, because you don't want players just to be waiting."
At the moment, Sony won’t cop to exact details about the SSD—who makes it, whether it utilizes the new PCIe 4.0 standard—but Cerny claims that it has a raw bandwidth higher than any SSD available for PCs. That’s not all. “The raw read speed is important,“ Cerny says, “but so are the details of the I/O [input-output] mechanisms and the software stack that we put on top of them. I got a PlayStation 4 Pro and then I put in a SSD that cost as much as the PlayStation 4 Pro—it might be one-third faster." As opposed to 19 times faster for the next-gen console, judging from the fast-travel demo.
As you’ve noticed, this is all hardware talk. Cerny isn’t ready to chat about services or other features, let alone games and price, and neither is anyone at Sony. Nor will you hear much about the console at E3 in June—for the first time, Sony won’t be holding a keynote at the annual games show. But a few more things come out during the course of our conversation. For example, the next-gen console will still accept physical media; it won’t be a download-only machine. Because it’s based in part on the PS4’s architecture, it will also be backward-compatible with games for that console. As in many other generational transitions, this will be a gentle one, with numerous new games being released for both PS4 and the next-gen console. (Where exactly Hideo Kojima’s forthcoming title Death Stranding fits in that process is still unconfirmed. When asked, a spokesperson in the room repeated that the game would be released for PS4, but Cerny’s smile and pregnant pause invites speculation that it will in fact be a two-platform release.)
What gaming will look like in a year or two, let alone 10, is a matter of some debate. Battle-royale games have reshaped multiplayer experiences; augmented reality marries the fantastic and real in unprecedented ways. Google is leading a charge away from traditional consoles by launching a cloud-gaming service, Stadia, later this year. Microsoft’s next version of the Xbox will presumably integrate cloud gaming as well to allow people to play Xbox games on multiple devices. Sony’s plans in this regard are still unclear—it’s one of the many things Cerny is keeping mum on, saying only that “we are cloud-gaming pioneers, and our vision should become clear as we head toward launch”—but it’s hard to think there won’t be more news coming on that front.
For now, there’s the living room. It’s where the PlayStation has sat through four generations—and will continue to sit at least one generation more.

[According to the leak, the PlayStation 5 will either be released in March 2020 or November 2020, and will cost $499 (£380).
Express Online has heard similar reports of a March 2020 launch from industry insiders.
But the report also claims that the PS5 will launch alongside a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.]

Not sure that's going to happen, unless November is the release instead of Mar/April. Rockstar haven't provided any info on a new GTA yet, and they normally announce around a year before release, going on their past.

I feel like Sony have hijacked this tech advance a bit (probably with permission/in conjunction with Epic... but still) as this is more about the capabilities of Unreal 5 than the hardware (though of course, the hardware has to be good enough to run it). It is impressive though. I wouldn't expect to see games like this until maybe 2023 though, it takes devs a few years to get to grips with a new engine and push it to its capabilites. Tech demos like this are a different beast, as they'll have spent 6+ months optimising this few-minute-long segment, which obviously isn't a workable timeframe for making a whole game.
There was 6 years between the "Kara" tech demo and the release of Detroit: Become Human :umm2:.

Fingers crossed we'll find out more at
tomorrow's PS5 showcase. The Japanese giant says the
40-minute virtual event will feature "a look at some of the
great games coming to the PS5 at launch (and beyond!)".
The event begins this Wednesday,
16th September at 1pm PDT / 9pm BST / 10pm CEST.
As it stands, Microsoft is leading the race for Christmas
sales, having announced that the Xbox Series X
will cost £449 ($499, AU$749) and the Series S £249 ($299, AU$499).
Xbox pre-orders begin from 22nd September.]

How much was PS4 when it was out?
Tom4784

More expensive than I though, I was thinking around £400 and £300 for the digital version.
I'll stick to my plan of waiting until February/March to buy it, I think. Miles Morales is really the only game that's really tempting me at the moment and, if Capcom are consistent with their release dates, it'll be around February or March that REVIII releases.

What's the word on PS2 backwards compatibility? I don't really buy physical games any more, the last was nearly 3 years ago, so I would totally go for the digital edition (mainly for the sleeker look) but if there's PS2 backwards compatibility I'll be shelling out for the drive.

I just read that both the XBXSRSX and PS5 are rockin' somewhere around the equivalent of an RTX 2080 Super... but the already released (though impossible to buy anywhere :bawling: ) RTX 30- series outperforms the 20- series by a massive margin... an even bigger jump in performance than the GTX 9- series to the 10- series (which was huge).
So the consoles are lagging significantly behind high-end PC graphics before they've even released which I think might be a first :umm2:.
I wonder how it'll affect the generation. Like I said, the jump in performance is unusually big and if the consoles were coming just a year later, they would have been significantly more powerful.
Just wish I could get my hands on a 3080 before Cyberpunk but it's looking extremely unlikely, the reseller prices on eBay are just daft and everywhere is sold out.

Spiderman is the only really tempting game at launch, but I can wait until February-April when RE8 is likely to come out.
I did have Cyberpunk pre-ordered until the latest delay for the PS4 but since there's a lot of reports of the current gen versions being problematic, I think I'll likely get Spiderman, Cyberpunk and RE8 as my first PS5 games.

Don't get me wrong, I'm mostly a PC gamer so I'm not shy about frivolous spends, I spent just under £800 on two monitors in July (a 32" 4k and a 28" 1440p 165hz) :joker:. I also will definitely be getting a PS5 long before any price drops etc... It's more having to put in extra effort to secure one I don't really understand, but then, I'm quite lazy. If I can't just go on a website and order current stock, then I can't really be arsed :umm2:.
That said, I'd have got one for Cyberpunk if I only had consoles, I suspect the PS4 version is going to be stripped back and will STILL have framerate issues.

Game is about 15 minutes away from me and isn't in the city centre so it's completely hassle free. I parked outside and was in and out within 20 mins when I reserved. It's only lockdown thats forced the extra hassle. They're attaching raffle tickets to receipts, and pre-packaging everything the night before, so it'll actually be a lot quicker to pick up on release day, without the need for queuing and paying. £581 for the disc version, Morales, and valhalla ultimate edition.

It's because of the "next gen" SSD speed needed for the games. Apparently it has an upgrade slot for an m.2 drive that just involves popping off one side of the case though, I think it has to be one of the "newer" ones which are still on the pricier side, but basically in a year or two you should be able to chuck a 2gb storage upgrade in there for like £50. Flash storage prices drop fast as the technology progresses.

I've heard it's very quiet, although... it could be powered by a 747 engine and still be quieter than my 4 Pro. I generally use a headset which makes it less of an issue, but me and my wife played Little Hope a few weeks back and we had to use subtitles because the TV would have woken the kids if it had been up loud enough to be heard over the damn console. The neighbours must have thought we were hoovering at 1am.

To get the best out of the CPU opponents is to put their settings to Medium/Semi-Pro difficulty as it's not so easy that you end up walking every match, but not so ridiculously hard that it spoils the Game.

I still can't wait to see what's POSSIBLE on the PS5, because whilst what I've seen so far all looks good, I still frankly haven't seen anything graphics wise that even begins to compete with TLOU2's "burning island". Obviously that wasn't "standard PS4", it was breathtakingly standout, along with a few scenes from Death Stranding, showcasing what I think are probably the absolute limits of the PS4... so I guess it'll be a few years until devs start really blowing minds with this gen's capabilities.

OK, so.... wouldn't load up this morning. On screen said there was a storage issue, but then it cycled through to 100% and then turned itself off. Had a look on the internet and seems like it's an issue with the Miles game. Took me about 3 attempts at a factory reset in safe mode before it worked.

OK, so.... wouldn't load up this morning. On screen said there was a storage issue, but then it cycled through to 100% and then turned itself off. Had a look on the internet and seems like it's an issue with the Miles game. Took me about 3 attempts at a factory reset in safe mode before it worked.

It's been working perfectly since I rebooted without that game. This is the other reason to hold off a bit on a new launch; letting you lot guinneapig the hardware and firmware issues so that they get patched up. This could be the game but a bad but of game code shouldn't be able to affect the whole system like that, sounds like a firmware issue with the PS5 software itself.

Yeah, I'm contacting game in the morning to get this sent back and replaced. It takes abut 20 boot ups to get it to work properly. Pretty sure it's a hard drive issue, as it keeps trying to repair the storage (on a brand new machine!) and then just turns itself off. I've reset and rebuilt everything I possibly can, but this is a dodgy machine I have! I'll probably end up with a working PS5 after all the 2nd and 3rd wavers have got theirs!

The "fancy" next gen SSD is one of the major selling points of the PS5, hopefully yours is just a rare dodgy one as there being a widescale problem with the SSD would be a disaster for Sony :umm2:.
Of course, on PC we've had m.2 NVMe SSD's for years and replaceable parts so don't have to worry about such things...

SURELY Sony would want you to send them the defective one if they're replacing...
...although my wife did almost get two brand new iPhones once, because the delivery fella left the first one in a recycle bin TWO DOORS DOWN and marked it as delivered. Phone company thankfully believed that it never turned up and sent a replacement - then about a week later, the neighbour (who had been off on holiday) knocks the door with the first one. We were honest though and sent it back to the phone company :hmph:

I'm not sure; they didn't say anything about sending this one back (obviously that could change), and I've seen YT vids of them just sending them out to Americans who were on the earlier release date and had faulty machines.
Just waiting to hear from Sony again, so I'll definitely know one way or the other within the next day or 2. I think there have been a sh1tload of 5's that have been dodgy, so I think they're trying to minimise the negative publicity, by not making folks jump through hoops to get replacements.

Apparently a massive stock in the UK (3500 consoles) has been scalped again... lol.
They're going for £850 (disc) and £700 (digital) on eBay at the moment... I can see this going on for a while. I honestly wish there was regulation to force online retailers to stop this from happening, i.e. flagging any suspicion of bulk ordering and stopping it wherever possible.
They're going to sell out to genuine buyers anyway, it's not like the retailer is going to miss out on a sale.

The Dreamcast was great. Didn’t sell well because of Sega’s own doings in the 90’s but still a great console, way ahead of its time.
Jet Set Radio and Shenmue were the only good games on it and even then the sequels on original xbox were 10x better

You can't judge any console until its run is over (unless it's actually defective) because all that actually matters is the exclusives... and obviously the PS5 has very few titles thus far. The PS3 had a slightly ropey start but had delivered the InFamous series, Uncharted series, Heavy Rain, The Last Of Us etc. by closing. PS4 has delivered a much longer list of good exclusives. Can't see Sony dropping the ball this gen tbh.

[The PS5 was launched in November 2020 and has been
a hot ticket item ever since,
with Sony apologising for lack of stock and
promising to boost production.
Sony is yet to comment on the
latest shortages, said to be caused by
lack of AMD chips, but some experts has said
the PS5 drought could continue until July.
On a brighter note, Digitimes reports that Sony
is planning to ship between 16.8 million

Getting hold of PS5 accessories is
getting (a bit) easier, too
. Currys still has the PS5 Pulse 3D Wireless PS5

Tbf I'm all sad that I can't get one but it's purely out of... A desire to have one... :joker:. There are still literally no exclusives I'm all that interested in yet so there's actually no point in me having one . I was hyped for Mileser-man but from what I've heard, it's quite short (more like a large DLC than a full game) so I'm happy enough to wait for that. If a big Sony exclusive drops before I manage to get one I'll be quite annoyed.
That said; I think this probably works the other way. Sony isn't going to drop a big exclusive while there are still console shortages... they'd be more likely to delay the game if that happened.
my first impressions are very positive. Good graphics, very responsive and the new controller is excellent

I'm assuming he just meant "order", most of the big sites seem to be opening up orders for incoming stock before they actually get it, e.g. they say "order today, delivered by [X date in a week or two]" which is different to the usual ordering structure where you'd order something already in their warehouse... but it's not (technically) a pre-order.

I finally got my hands on one... I caved and bought it with a bumped up price :worry:. Not from a mass scalper though, from some bloke who got one in pre-order and has been too busy with work to even hook it up :umm2: so decided to sell it on and buy one later when they're back in stock, so I don't feel TOO bad about it. It was also only £70 over RRP (some on ebay are going for RRP +£200).
ANYWAY. I finally have one! And then I was like, what can I actually play on it? But then I found out that Ghost of Toosh, which I bought on release but stopped playing after an hour because frankly the framerate was unplayable in my opinion, runs at 60fps 4k on the PS5 :omgno:. Smoothe as butter! So I shall finally be playing through that until the Nier Replicant remake releases at the end of April.

The only reason i don’t wanna buy from a scalper/private seller is if owt goes wrong you’re basically stuck with it :worry:
If it’s brand new in box you can activate the warranty yourself and then just punt it to Sony if there’s a problem. Even better if you can get them to include original proof of purchase, but it’s not usually necessary, so long as no one has registered it online already. Also if it’s advertised as BNIB and turns out not to be then it was a misleading listing and you’ll probably get offered a discount (but can opt for full refund).
Not that I’m advocating going with a scalper, I’m hoping at some point the world figures out how to crack down on it because it’s just getting ridiculous. Apparently it’s well known that there scalpers out there with literally hundreds of consoles stacked in their basement, while consumers can’t buy one from retailers. Same thing is happening with high-end PC graphics cards. I’ve all but given up on getting my hands on one... and scalpers are selling for £1200+

Does anyone have a Pulse 3D headset? Are they any good? My PS4 Gold headset is getting loads of interference when I try to use it with the PS5 (crackling/cutting out for a second every few mins). On the plus side, the PS5 seems to work with 3rd party USB wireless headsets (the PS4 did not) however my Razer headset (for the PC) isn't playing well with the PS5's 3D audio. It sounds fine if I switch off 3D audio but with it on, music is loud and bassy, sound effects somewhere in the middle and voice is very quiet. The PS4 headset on the other hand sounds great with the 3D audio on - when it's working :idc:.

Speaking of techy geeky stuff - I love the controller haptic feedback, especially the triggers. Genuinely think the controller might be what properly elevates the PS5 above the competition this gen (alongside exclusives as always).
I just read something interesting though; apparently in December post-release they patched in more haptic feedback in AC Valhalla ... but completely left it out of the patch notes. Rumours circulating that it was deliberately left out on release, and brought back in "under the radar" so to speak, because Ubi didn't want it to be a "selling point" for the game on PS5 vs Xbxsrsx/PC as they have various deals with Mikeysoft.
Honestly can't wait to see how it's implemented by the big Sony exclusive devs 🤓
yeah i like the controller a lot too, overall the ps5 is an obvious step up and thats becoming harder and harder to achieve

Just buy from a scalper, it was a top notch experience that I thoroughly recommend. The excitement that it might be a scam really adds to the experience. The delivery date from the courier kept changing, it said it would take a week to arrive, “will it actually be a sack of rice”, “will it really be BNIB or will it be a dodgy one with glitches”, “will it even arrive at all” BUT THEN there’s a knock at the door and it has arrived in 48h, and it really is new and sealed, and everything was fine. The drama, the highs and lows... an adventure not to be forgotten.
