View Full Version : DENTISTS! Anyone else petrified?

Absolutely petrified to the point where I haven't been for about 10 years and luckily haven't needed to. However, a small hole in my tooth which I've had for a few years but wasn't bothering me turned into the whole tooth crumbling over Christmas but I wasn't getting any pain so still left it.

This week though I've been getting extreme pain and I know I'll have to give in and go but I'm so scared :( It's not just a "don't like dentists" it's a genuine fear.

Anyone else like this with dentists?

I’m not scared of going, but once I’m there and in the waiting room, being able to hear like, the drills and stuff being used freaks me right out

I’m not scared of going either. I had to have two fillings and a tooth taken out when I was younger so I never really had a fear of going as I got older.

I used to shake just taking the kids for their check ups.
Ended up pulling some of my teeth out myself when needed.
I can remember the dentist coming out and giving me a calming cuddle in a full waiting room when he took two of my son’s teeth out, quite embarrassing, but very understanding dentist.

I don't like going but it's better to than leave it.

I left my teeth go really bad when I was very ill with anxiety/depression (I was a recluse basically), the meds I was on killed nerves in my teeth and rotted around some fillings I already had and I ended up having abscesses... Nothing a dentist will do to you will be as painful as that trust me!!

I ended up having 4 teeth out and 4 fillings in one sitting last September and it was a breeze and kind of did away with any of my nerves about dentists! Just the injections that stung a bit and then lots of tugging :laugh2:

Yeah, from what you mentioned, it sounds similar to something I had and the pain got worse and I ended up needing to have a root canal, so it would be best to get it seen to asap :worry:

I'm not particularly scared of them but I do find the whole thing pretty horrible.. some bloke sticking his hand in your mouth and the drill against your teeth when that needs doing and last time I was there they scraped away some plaque which made me wince a bit. I can't imagine actually being a dentist, you have to inflict so much pain and you see people in such a vulnerable state :worry:

...I know it’s going to be really scary for you, Danny...but once you have been this one time you’ll realise that actually there’s nothing at all to fear...whatever is needed to be done to repair your teeth, will all be done pain free...and hopefully you’ll really feel liberated that you’ve gone and that you’re on the way to healthy teeth and that you’ve achieved something very huge for you...good luck, you’ll be fine ......you’ll get there and then you’ll know there’s nothing to fear for next time...let us know how you get on, yeah....

I hate the dentist. No one really likes it, surely. My brother, however, has a real phobia. I remember when he was young and a motorcycle courier, he delivered a package to a dentist in Wimpole Street, got a whiff of the dentist smell and passed out.

I had a dentist break a drill on my tooth during a root canal. It's still in there... he just kind of filled over it, but you can see it on x-rays. And he was bloody Scottish... I think he did it on purpose.

i avoided the dentist for years, because as a kid, the dentist i had was dreadful. Eventually I plucked up the courage and found a really good one. I don't have any fear going to him now and i've had some serious work done without issue

I have a phobia about it and I mean like to the point I shake, sweat, feel sick and dizzy etc and that's before I even set foot in the place, luckily for me and my gnashers though I am with a dental practice that specialise in dealing with nervous patients, they are actually amazing at what they do.

Good luck Danny

My brother is the same, his face visibly whitens if you even mention the dentist. Lucky for him he has good teeth, but when he has to have a filling he has a general anaesthetic. And of course it gives me a golden opportunity to call him a pussy. I'm his sister, that's my job.

I'm the same really, even thinking about making the appointment I actually cry and feel dizzy. Sounds ridiculous but it's a huge genuine fear :bawling: There's no way I'll be going on my own though, I'll have to take my mam :joker:

Pain hasn't been too bad today though. Uncomfortable but not painful, but I'm starting to accept it needs sorting.

Do you have a dentist near you that specialises in nervous patients? If you could register with a practice like that it would make the experience so much better for you.

Got past the first stage, now if it's the difficult bit :( It's a genuine phobia not just finding it scary

Need a tooth out, which is infected underneath the gum, but apart from that it's alright. I was a complete mess mind, panic attacks before I even got there. But the dentist was lovely, so understanding, I wouldn't have managed to even sit in the chair if she wasn't so nice tbh. But like I say identifying the problem is the easy bit, I need to do it all again but it'll be 10 times worse

Well done you for going!

Honestly, having a tooth out is NOTHING. Just a wiggling sensation and then a really satisfying "relief" feeling when it's out. Takes like 5 seconds. No pain! A filling is much worse. Just try not to think about it mate.

I had 4 teeth out and a few little fillings in one hit last year after neglecting going due to bad anxiety/depression episodes for years, the medication I was on had ruined my teeth which resulted in me having recurring abscesses (which ain't a barrel of laughs and much more painful than any dental procedure!) Honestly, I just felt the initial injections, like a brief sting, and once I was numb I couldn't even tell you where exactly the dentist was in my mouth, didn't feel a thing. Just laid back and closed my eyes, could have easily fell asleep tbh.

You can do it!

I just got a tooth out but I was more worried about the actual injections/sedation. It felt like it took 2 minutes but it was nearly half an hour so must have been knocked out for a while. Took it out, filled another but tried to do the scale and polish but it made me feel sick so they stopped half way. I think that was cos of all the other stuff I'd had done though so I wouldn't worry about it Morgan. If I can do it anybody can!

Still absolutely petrified though - and a little drunk from the sedation yikes

My dad basically overdosed on the sedation :omgno: He had to have a tooth out so they injected his gum with the anaesthetic and you’re meant to leave it a while so start working but they tried taking the tooth out immediately. He told them it was too painful, and in total they gave him like 5 shots of anaesthetic and it still never numbed :skull:
