My daughter is getting one of these next week when her contract expires, is it advisable not to ?It's not the phones that are (supposedly) an issue, it's that the company is setting up the actual data towers that will provide the 5G coverage - for all handsets, on all networks. Because its a Chinese company and the Chinese government has some laws in place that could mean they can demand that the company shares data with them, and thus, there are concerns about the Chinese government having access to personal data transmitted over 5G.
It doesn't matter what brand of handset you have, if the plan goes ahead all 5G data for the foreseeable future would go through Huawei data masts.
The handsets themselves are decent. Great camera.

The Phones are Great Value
its not the Huawei Mobile Phones
as TS just stated its the 5G Tower's etc.
5G has a different type of architecture than previous versions. It's architecture means that any element of the system can become a security vulnerability, hence the importance of making sure all the end to end hardware is secure. That's why everyone is concerned by the chinese involvement, and rightly so.

Some big tech firms cut employees' access to Huawei, muddying 5G rollout
[Chipmakers Intel Corp and Qualcomm Inc, mobile research
firm InterDigital Wireless Inc and South Korean
carrier LG Uplus have restricted employees from
informal conversations with Huawei,
the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker,
the sources said.
Such discussions are a routine part of
international meetings where engineers
gather to set technical standards for
communications technologies,
including the next generation of
mobile networks known as 5G.
The U.S. Department of Commerce
has not banned contact between companies
and Huawei.
On May 16, the agency put Huawei on a blacklist,
barring it from doing business with U.S. companies
without government approval,
then a few days later it authorized U.S. companies
to interact with Huawei in standards bodies
through August “as necessary for the development of 5G standards.”
The Commerce Department reiterated that
position on Friday in response to a question from Reuters. ]
[Nevertheless, at least a handful of major U.S. and overseas tech companies are telling their
employees to limit some forms of direct interaction,
the people said, as they seek to avoid any potential
issues with the U.S. government.
Intel and Qualcomm said they have provided compliance
instructions to employees, but declined to comment on them further.]

[5G SLOWDOWN
The new restrictions could slow the rollout of 5G, which is expected to power
everything from high-speed video transmissions to self-driving cars,
according to several industry experts.
At a 5G standards meeting last week in Newport Beach, California,
participants privately expressed alarm to Reuters that the long-standing cooperation
among engineers that is needed for phones and networks to connect globally
could fall victim to what one participant described as a “tech war” between the U.S. and China]

I'm not bothered about 5g, 4g is ample for handheld devices and full-wired connections will ALWAYS be better in the home. 5g can beat home broadband "raw download speeds", sometimes by a large margin, but it is nowhere near to matching ping speeds (responsiveness) or network stability which is (in my opinion) far more important than speed. They should be focussing on rolling out full fibre-to-the-door so that we can have ultra-fast wired home broadband :hee:.
Howefferrrrrrrr the Huawei issue is a thinly-veiled US trade sanction on China. It is economic/political and has absolutely nothing to do with data security, much like the whole "TikTok is steal ur data!!" tinfoil hat nonsense.

[Huawei 5G kit must be removed from UK by 2027
The UK's mobile providers are being banned
from buying new Huawei 5G equipment
after 31 December, and they must also remove
all the Chinese firm's 5G kit from their networks by 2027.
Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden
told the House of Commons of the decision.
It follows sanctions imposed by Washington,
which claims the firm poses
a national security threat - something Huawei denies.
Mr Dowden said the move would delay
the country's 5G rollout by a year.
"This has not been an easy decision,
but it is the right one for the UK telecoms networks,
for our national security and our economy,
both now and indeed in the long run," he said.]

Yes China warned
this will cause trouble
It's just the start, the US intends to gradually erode and economically destroy China over time. Tech industries are an easy sell for a first step because the general public (and plenty of politicians) are easily rattled by the idea of "scary hacker stuff!!" so will justify it on those grounds. It'll progress from there and, because China is wholly reliant on international trade for basic sustenance, they will use their military might against nearest-neighbours to ensure that their own people are fed. This will be branded an act of unwarranted aggression in the West and used to justify full isolation of China - and I can't see that going anywhere other than a full scale conflict.
Things like pandemics and economic disruption lead to war. It's tried-and-tested global history.
the usa sanctions meant that Hauwei couldn't use the chipset on their hardware that was agreed. That makes a big difference, because if its cheap chips of chinese design then they could easily be vulnerable. Once America turns the screw, they make it impossible for other nations not to tow the line. I think though that after Hong Kong, the UK changed it's stance significantly
