Internet modems, furniture,
lighting products, car parts,
vacuum cleaners and building materials
are all affected by the hike.
Donald Trump has increased tariffs
on $200bn (£153bn) of Chinese
imports - heightening tensions with Beijing.
The tariff hike came despite
American and Chinese negotiators meeting
for last-ditch talks in Washington on Thursday.
Import taxes on products from
5,700 categories rose from
10% to 25% at 12.01am Washington time
(5.01am UK time).

China needs to back down
and negotiate a deal with President Trump.

All that happens with this, is that the Chinese increase the costs of these things to avoid a loss in profit, which means the American people pay for them, so these tariffs are basically an extra tax for Americans to pay.

He's killing farming in the US with his tariffs in that industry, it's so bad the government is now having to subsidise farmers to help them throuh the trade war their own government created.

Chinese are making more money on their products and the people of the us pay for it, so explain how this forces China to the negotiating table.

I never knowingly buy anything Chinese. I know there are hidden components in things that probably were made in China... but I would never buy a product marked made in China. I'm very choosy over which regimes I send money to.

Trump has shown that he doesnt understand the simplest of economics around trade tariffs so it's a bit of a non starter really. I do think China have had it too easy for too long, so something had to be done about them, but i'm not sure sending the world into recession (which these tariffs will do) is the smartest solution.

Just to explain a little further, the world needs China to be in a position of growth to avoid recession, because it is it's economy that drives growth on the worlds. If China's economy shrinks ... we end up in recession. Simple economics.

When the government subsidises industry, that's the socialism that they all rail against. Are you for Trumps socialist policies, Arista?

No I fully understand socialism
that's why Labour lost the UK General Election
in 1979.

But you support this socialist policy from Trump, which is paid by taxpayers to cover up his complete misunderstanding of tariffs and how they work.

Pfft. He's usually been good for the wallets of Joe Public with generally lower taxes and stuff, this ain't a good move.

Joe public are actually worse off under Trump. His tax cut was for the wealthy, and the recent tax fillings from those not at the top highlight this as a fact.

It's necessary government funding to keep farmers afloat. That is a socialist policy...

USA Farmers matter

Then why did he introduce tariffs in the first place? Anyone who knows anything about this, understands a trade war only forces your own citizens to pay more tax.

Remember on the campaign trail when he said "trade wars are so easy to win" How do you think that is working out for him?

All it is is posturing during discussions.

In the short term America and it's consumers actually benifit from this tariff. This tariff has solid support from both sides of the house and will be being used as a bargaining tool in the next round of discussions.

Separating Economic Facts From Fiction on the Trump Tax Cuts
(https://www.heritage.org/taxes/commentary/separating-economic-facts-fiction-the-trump-tax-cuts)
How much will I save this year?

A: Last year’s tax reform cut taxes for the vast majority of Americans.

Using IRS data, The Heritage Foundation found that average households in every congressional district will get a tax cut in 2018. Most Americans are already receiving their tax cut through lower employer withholding.

The average American can expect a $1,400 tax cut this year, and a family of four will get a $2,900 reduction.

Q: What does the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act mean for the economy?

A: Workers have been better off almost every year since America started its slow climb out of the Great Recession in 2009, but this year is different. Things aren’t just a bit better; we’re setting records.

This summer, manufacturing activity hit its highest level in 14 years, the economy is in the midst of the longest-running period of businesses adding new jobs, and wages are increase faster than they have since 2009, when we were first climbing out of the bottom of the Great Recession.

Many workers are benefiting twice from the tax cuts. First, by paying less in taxes, and second from higher wages generated by a faster-growing economy.

The Heritage Foundation recently calculated that, over the next decade, the typical American household will reap an additional $26,000 in take-home pay, thanks to the cuts and the economic growth they fuel.

For a family of four, the 10-year benefits are almost $45,000. That’s more than enough to buy a new car or to put a down payment on a house.

I'll be charitable because you obviously have no idea who the heritage foundation is, but they are a looney right wing org that basically gave trump his list of supreme court judges to pick from, mainly based on their opposition to abortion and tax.

That's propaganda not details.

Never heard of them, but it was all sourced in the article.
