View Full Version : Ross references Big Brother (and makes a REAL racist comment)

To start off light hearted, for the attention of fans of Celebrity Big Brother 5, Shilpa Shetty will be on Jonathan Ross's show next Friday.

-----

OK, this is quite a serious subject but I think it may have been done deliberately to reference Big Brother. On Jonathan Ross' show tonight he interviewed Myleene Klass, and when talking about reality TV, he briefly pointed out the racism issues in recent times.

The next guest was tennis player Andy Roddick, and during the conversation Ross enquired as to why Roddick couldn't win matches played on clay courts, as opposed to him being practically unbeatable (apart from Federer) on grass courts. To charm Roddick, Ross suggested that clay courts were for "lesser men.........Spanish men." (Implying Rafael Nadal's 'advantage', him being a dominant clay court player)

This was a distinctly, straight-forward racist comment by Ross, making an actual statement of racial discrimination.

How are we supposed to view this comment from a respected TV personality, when compared to Emily's incorrect use of the N word on Big Brother?

(THIS SUBJECT WAS STARTED TO PROMOTE DISCUSSION, MAY I SUGGEST IT IS NOT TAKEN ANY FURTHER THAN THE FORUM, i.e. MAKING COMPLAINTS ABOUT JONATHAN ROSS. THANKS.)

Yeah and Emily made a 'real' racist comment as well, they were both obviously joking (although Emily has allegedly used racist language before...), what do you want, for Jonathon Ross to be evicted from his own show?

Ah I dont think this really compares. Ross is always making risque comments and the audience and viewers all know he is joking. His entire show is tongue-in-cheek. Whereas Emily calling Charley a "ni**er" to her face on a reality TV show is very different and very, very REAL.

People know what to expect when they see Johnathan Ross's show - lot's of offensive stuff which is not meant to be taken seriously. But when you watch Big Brother contestants you are getting real personalities and usually they cannot hide their nasty side for too long.

I think it's scary how some Emily fans have the pushed the boundaries of admiring her and worshipping her... No offence intended, as I always feel I have to point out, it's just my opinion. Anyway, maybe the whole Emily thing is actually starting to get tedious for a lot of people now...

I see where you are coming from chosen_one but do you really think that Rossy's comment was comparible to that of Emily's? I cant see it myself.

I do think that at times Ross over steps the mark, and this may well be one of those times but racist hmm I am not convinced

Jonathan Ross is one of those presenters who is quite comical. He wants to jest all the time & the word "Serious" is a word he doesn't understand.

If Shilpa Shetty is being interviewed by him, or even another Celebrity, white or non-white, it hardly makes a difference to quirky-Jonathon.

I am not interested in watching interviews by him on serious issues.

Leave that to a professional interviewer, who can tell the difference between (seriousness & frivolity)

I think Ross comment was just sucking up to his guest and Rafael Nadal has probably played on clay from a young age as that is probably what he had access to.

i get the feeling that people are now looking for other "racist" comments on tv so they can justify emily's actions. then they can say "well they said that, and nothing was done" but it's the fact that emily used the word. jonathon ross didn't use a racially offensive word. and it was obvious that he was joking. the housemates aren't the only ones who are watching what they are saying. i'm sure he knows his limits.

The problem is that we are now highly mindful of every single word spoken and watchful for them.

I do not consider J Ross a serious nor racist but I do see where you are coming from but where do we stop?

My personal opinion of it Sunny, is that Emily said a word and Ross (one of my favourite tv personalities) told a joke, simple as that, but as you probably know, I've supported Emily through this. It is Emily's critics and detractors who have put such an irrational twist on this BB incident, so it will be interesting to hear the comments from those who condemned Emily and blew this issue out of proportion, in the first place.

I'll be pedantic and say the Spanish aren't a race; xenophobia and racism aren't the same thing. BTW I've got to say Wossy's a genius.

I saw the show (shown at 11.20 in Northern Ireland so I saw if after BB) and that is exactly what was happening. Roddick was poking fun at himself for how badly he plays on clay and Wossy was jokingly trying to massage his ego by suggesting that it must be lesser men who do well on clay! They had already mentioned how well the spanish do on clay, so it was just tying the two parts together. I didn't take any offence from it, although I'm not a spanish tennis player so don't know how they would have reacted!

And Roddick went on to say that actually playing on clay is more physically demanding and that maybe he was actually the lesser man!

It's not uncommon on British TV to see some form of xenophobia (usually directed at the germans or the french) and nothing is done about it. Hypocrisy maybe, but somethings people can get away with and some they can't. Maybe it's not fair, but that's life.

I think it's a gross over-reaction if anyone thinks JR was being racist. However, if he had used the "N" word on his show whilst talking to a guest who was Black, then that would have been racist. Simple as that.

I suggest people stop with the "where's the freedom of speech" and "we have to read on eggshells" bullshit, and move on to the simple fact that "we shouldn't insult others on the basis of their colour/nationality/religion". It's simple manners, something which Emily clearly lacks, despite her privileged upbringing.

From what I heard, it seems JR made a statement that implied a stereotype. If he'd made a comment about Jews being tight it would be the same thing. If, on the other hand, he called a jewish person a kyke then he'd be in trouble

'Irrational twist', 'blew this issue out of proportion'. I'm stunned. Emily used one of the most offensive words on the planet. She had to go. Have you read my last post in t he 'if its such a bad word' thread. After you view it, can I ask? Do you think that after Michael Richards uses the word, the audience walk out was 'irrational' or 'out of proportion'? No they walked out because they were offended.

People have called Emily a 'racist' because she spoke a word which was common in certain circles. That's an irrational twist. The way people have converted their original jealousy and hatred for a well spoken upper class girl into this tidal wave of condemnation is blowing it 'out of proportion'. If someone like Laura had said the word, people would have rightfully been shocked but would not react the way people have reacted on the forum, of that I am almost sure. Emily's haters would still be tucked away, still hating Emily.

I'm not trying to undermine the process of Emily being evicted for using a word that would offend, I'm undermining the irrational hatred we are now encountering.

So to declare a group of people "lesser men" based on their nationality, compared to English men and American men, is OK

YET

If you speak a word, regardless of context - (e.g. Kyke) - Then that is racism in full flow?

First point, the fact that she used the word means that we can ask the question. I don't see her getting picked on. In fact she made a number of contentious statements before entering the house. Now that she's disgraced herself in this manner, people have the right to know. I don't think she is being subjected to hatred. I watched her interview on BBLB and was genuinely taken by her honesty.

Second point, as you pointed out, JR made a joke and as nodis has pointed out, he is the kind of performer who tries to push the boundaries. And yes, the term kike is officially defined as derogatory, so it is racism in full flow.

A baby's first word could happen to be 'kyke', but a baby could never make a racially derogatory statement.

Do you see what I'm getting at, racism in verbal form is about the content of statements, not about phonetics. Attacking these silly individual words doesn't stop racism. Educating people stops racism, which includes all these ignorant people hurling the word 'racist' around.

I'm not referring to you Girth, you have made some very solid arguments all over the forum, but some of our fellow posters are using this word 'racist' to hide behind their ignorance, when ignorance itself is what causes discrimination.

Thanks Girth. As I said in the opening post, this is a serious subject so I can understand people not wishing to get involved, but this is an invitation for the people crying 'racist!!' to explain themselves and apply equal condemnation to all race related incidents. We'll have to wait and see if one of them can meet the challenge.

LOL that really is hilarious, who'd have thought there'd be a neo-Nazi on this forum? How dare anyone speak out against racism! Honestly, by saying that racism must be stamped out, this guy could actually be the very tyrant responsible for the deaths of thousands of Jewish men, women and children... No, really it is no laughing matter when people go out of their way to defend some stupid little madam like Emily Parr by comparing someone to Hitler merely because their opinion is different... It's actually disgraceful...

There's no disgrace in my post whatsoever Jaz0.

Adolf Hitler was a facist aswell as a racist. Facism is a very similar thing, which you'd know if you actually knew what you were talking about, and Turrican's post reeks of disgraceful facist sentiment.

e.g. Would prefer a world without free speech and has the audacity to reserve the right to choose who lives in it.

Yeah that makes sense, anyone whose opinion isn't exactly the same as yours doesn't know what they're talking about... I know what fascism means (I even know how to spell it, look at that!) and I know that hating racism doesn't make someone a fascist and that it is far crueller and more unjustified to compare someone to Adolf Hitler than it is to kick Emily out of Big Brother because she's a silly hypocrite (you will never have caught me calling her a racist, incidentally...).

Okay but let's face it, you'll defend Emily until you're blue in the face and if she were to reveal that she wants to rid the world of anyone who doesn't have white skin, blonde hair and blue eyes, you'd probably still find a reason to defend her...

That's one of the stupidest thing's i've heard all this week. "Emily parr is not a racist" LOL that's like saying the sun is not hot.

Emily called a black person a NI**ER to her FACE. How much more racist do you want? and it was not in the context of "hey my ni**a how you doing?" or any other "street slang" context. It was at the end of a sentence which was designed to insult.

If you defend her, you are as bad as her. Simply a racist who has yet to come out of the closet.

I do NOT assume Emily is a racist. I KNOW she is a racist, along with the rest of the country, (catch up, dear) Which is the reason why she was thrown out of BB, and also the reason her family have disowned her.

I don't see how your inept logic has come to the conclusion that I am the racist here instead; simply for pointing out that those defending a racist are most likely racist themselves.

Again, I will repeat what I said about Jonathan Ross's so-called "racial slur" on spanish men: His show is all about tongue-in-cheek nonsense, it's not to be taken seriously, the audience know it and so do the viewers at home (all expect you it seems)
Comparing Jonathan Ross's COMEDY show to Emily on a REALITY TV show is laughable (as I said before). Ross did not insult anyone personally, he made an off-the-cuff remark as he always does in a very generalised and comic way and most likely does not reflect his PERSONAL views in real life at home etc.

Emily slipped up.. she showed the nation what she was on reality TV - someone who uses the N word in normal conversation to INSULT someone (as she most likely does alot with her friends/family in private)

Glad we cleared that up :)

Unless you know Emily personally, you can't actually state that fact. The whole country doesn't think that Emily is a racist. Once again, How do you know that the whole country believes that? the_chosen_one probably will ignore that (catch up, dear) comment...

Which is the reason why she was thrown out of BB, and also the reason her family have disowned her.

Emily was thrown out of the BB house, because she said the (N) word. It is against the rules and Endemol were not given any choice. The comment regarding her family disowning Emily, well that is incorrect....

Emily is loved by her family before she went in, during she was in & even after she came out & shall continue to do so. Facts are out there..

I don't see how your inept logic has come to the conclusion that I am the racist here instead; simply for pointing out that those defending a racist are most likely racist themselves.

I cannot comment on what, the_chosen_one's views are, in regards to yourself personally. However, anyone trying to clear Emily's name, doesn't mean that they are racist themselves. Also, the other-way-round too. Everyone has their views & all should respect them too

I have to say that Jonathon Ross does say some crazy stuff & if he has made a mistake, he will always apologise for it, if it has offended anyone. Some people don't think before they talk & can accidentally say something that they shouldn't

Emily slipped up.. she showed the nation what she was on reality TV - someone who uses the N word in normal conversation to INSULT someone (as she most likely does alot with her friends/family in private)

Glad we cleared that up :)

Once again, we don't have facts, in regards Emily being a racist person. All she said is the (N) word & she explained why & how she meant it & we can only make judgements from that at this stage.

If however, we find out some more concrete evidence later on, then we can look at that & make further & more educational judgements, as & when the evidence arrives.

If you say the word to yourself then fine (if that get's you off).. say it to a black persons FACE whom you hardly know as part of an INSULTING sentence then you ARE a racist. Wake up. Get a clue and stop trying to refute things that are already hard FACT.

And learn to spell for Christ's sake. Why can nobody spell "racist" even when the word is repeated about 100x on this page alone?

Who give's a "****"? Well I do for ONE. I don't see why another race of human being should be victimised just for having darker skin, you facist.

I'll repeat my arguement once more for the slow people here: Emily called a black person a ni**er to her face as part of an insulting sentence. This IS RACISM. Don't try and defend it - you just look as bad as her: stupid, ignorant and arrogant.

Where I stand on racial issues, is hardly to do with Jade Goody, is it? She's not racist, so that says something too:rolleyes:

If you think Jade Goody is a monstrosity? Then you can think what you like, while trying to think of a plausable reply??

We all know where you stand on racial issues if that revolting creature is your role model.

It's certainly a sad day in Great Britain if that monstrosity is an inspiration to anyone.

On the TIBB forum, anyone can reply to any post at any time. (Nevermind your exclusivity comment)

Butting in is just the way it goes:wink:

You have already read my comments Turrican, as curiousity-kills-the-cat:cat: you know:wink: No need to insult anyones intellegence on that score. That is too obvious.

Ummm... well, actually it's HERE (lol trust you to say something as stupid as that - you really do take after her huh? :D).

If I put you on ignore will I not see any of your posts including that disgusting face? I might try it.

Sorry, it's nothing personal towards you - i'm sure your a nice person in real life but I cannot stand Jade and everything she stands for - just an ignorant, racist baby-making machine.

Imagine if I had an avatar of Bin Laden or Hitler. It would offend some people right? Jade offends me - as she stands as our no.1 celebrity "role model" for Great Britain - except she hasnt done ANYTHING, she has no talent, she's as thick as dog droppings and she seems to love offending people. She SHAMED our country in CBB - most of the world witnessed it on every news channel.

She made me feel sick to be British and you should feel the same.

If I have annoyed you, then that is just the way it goes:whistle:

Nobody can tell someone to remove an avatar picture. Some find Paris Hilton to be offensive too. Paris is in jail & Jade is not:bigsmile: Don't leave George Michael out, will you:laugh:

Am I like Jade Goody?? I don't know, am I:puzzled:

I don't know? I have never used the ignore button, I don't need too, I'm too nice:angel:

I am very nice, helpful, friendly, supportive, observant, tactful + a few negatives, but I let others spot them:wink:

However, your posts sound rather hostile, I am sure others may notice? We are debating Emily's situation, not members themselves. That is something to think over Turrican:nono:

Jade Goody was very popular & still is to some. She knows what the public want & what BB is looking for to create good ratings. Don't be so sure that you understand her. Hitler & Bin Laden are murderers. That is going from one extreme to another. Anyone could work that out, even yourself, "I am sure:puzzled:"

She made me feel sick to be British and you should feel the same.

Don't feel that way. Most TIBB members are happy to be British & don't get so worked up either, but that's just life, well to some:rolleyes:

I think we should get back on topic & talk about Jonathon Ross & his remarks:wink:

Like I have said, Jonathon Ross is happy to apologise, if he has made a mistake.

If he has mentioned something which sounds racist, then he has done it accidentally. Jonathan Ross is not a racist person, but just like Emily, a mistake can happen.

it's about being careful....

Sometimes I"m quite happy to be french when I see what's going on in Britain but in 1 year I will be british, I will be glad too.
But I understand what some people mean, imagine a french girl do that in the french Big Brother, I would feel the same thing, BB is a representation of Britain and other countries, I will be quite sad if foreign people think that french or british people are like Emilee.

I think you will always enjoy saying that your roots are from France Remy:thumbs:

It's very appealing, especially the French accent:bigsmile:

Some people take BB too seriously & start climbing the walls at home & being so frightened to be British or whatever.

I don't feel that way & I don't take it too seriously. It is a reality show with carefully selected housemates, that's it really...

"Jade Goody was very popular & still is to some."

Yea, your right... and hitler is still popular to some - those people are called Nazi facists. But yea, it is an exageration to compare Jade to Hitler, I know. The problem is that everything is so global these days - when something bad happens in England on any scale the whole world knows about it instantly. I sometimes feel the pressure more than I probably should.

Anyway... sorry if I have offended you personally, it was not really my intention - Jade Goody brings out the worst in me lol. Again, i'm sure you are a nice person in real life. I won't put you on ignore, I will just learn to be more tolerant of other peoples views.

No problem Turrican:thumbs:

We can all get passionate at times & say things we shouldn't. But this Emily thing shall go on & on & on in the Newspapers, they are like a dog with a bone.
