He repeated the comments a bunch of times while drunk. Being drunk didn't put the thoughts in his head.

Being drunk doesn't put thoughts or phrases in your head, it just lets the ones that are in there spill out of your mouth. So yeah... seems like a bit of both. Racism doesn't just have to be aggressively ingrained, thought through hatred... unaddressed ignorance can be racism too. If it's the latter then at least there's hope for him (that he'll grow up and realise that he was racist and change his ways).

Essentially he is looking for ways to wound

his motivation is to hurt, to take his pain (arrest) and transfer it onto someone else

Well yes but it takes a fair bit of twisting to say that someone who is "trying to hurt someone with racist words" isn't being racist.

The Rugby team at my University were a shower of arseholes in all honesty. Just a jeering tidal wave of cocky pricks. Other than primary school scraps, I've only been in four physical fights in my entire life... one at about 16 with a guy on my school bus who punched a girl in the face and bust her nose (#fedora # shiningarmour #voteTS) and the other THREE were in my first couple of years at Uni with blokes who looked identical to this chap, who used to drunkenly bully and harass people constantly. Bleh. Ruggers.

My first husband played rugby, and while I didn't find they were mostly like you describe TS, do know exactly what you mean. I do Krav Maga and while I'm not going to pretend to be an expert, the bloke in the picture above? I could take the wind his sails. Imagine how that would be for him: slapped around by a girl.

If I must be fair :hmph:, it was a very large social club (the Rugby players), I think nearly 150 members, and I'm sure most of them were fine... but those ones aren't drawing attention to themselves I suppose, and the group of "bad 'uns" was big enough to be very noticeable, and there weren't any similar problems with the various other sports teams at the University. I guess as a group, they had a culture of bravado, one-upmanship and very heavy binge drinking which is never going to be pretty.
