View Full Version : Straight Pride Parade in Boston causing a stir

A lively discussion has kicked off on Twitter over the merits of straight people having their own Pride events.
A plan by a group in Boston, US, to hold a '"straight pride" march in August has sparked more than 45,000 tweets in the last 24 hours.
The group - Super Happy Fun America - has applied to the city government to hold their march, and approval is currently pending.Three men behind the event include John Hugo, who was the Republican candidate for Massachusetts' 5th Congressional District in the 2018 mid-term election.
On the organiser's website, Hugo is quoted as saying: "Straight people are an oppressed majority. We will fight for the right of straights everywhere to express pride in themselves without fear of judgement and hate."
Another organiser, Mark Sahady, is a member of a group called Resist Marxism which in 2018 held a "free speech" rally that was outnumbered by counter-demonstrators.
In a statement to the BBC, the Mayor of Boston, Marty Walsh said: "Every year Boston hosts our annual Pride Week, where our city comes together to celebrate the diversity, strength and acceptance of our LGBTQ community.
"This is a special week that represents Boston's values of love and inclusion, which are unwavering. I encourage everyone to join us in celebration this Saturday for the Pride Parade and in the fight for progress and equality for all."
Although the straight pride event has not yet been confirmed, it has not stopped many people weighing in to criticise the idea.
"Every day is a straight pride parade," wrote author Craig Rozniecki, arguing that heterosexuals' privileged position over gay people renders the concept of their needing pride events redundant.

You would have to wonder what motivates people to copy the Pride March and I just don't think it's really about celebrating sexuality. Straight people are not oppressed for their sexuality, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard
Vicky.

Straight pride is quite daft tbh. Mind, Gay Pride has turned into something totally different these days too, genuinely seems to (at least newcastle pride) be about who can gain the most attention by wearing the least clothes, prancing about in bondage gear..or being 'outrageous (read blowjobs in the street and that :umm2: ), and the organisers ripping the eyeballs out of anyone in sight.
A hell of a lot of my mates refuse to have anything to do with the pride parades as they say these days its basically a 'show off your fetish' thing..rather than about acceptance and visibility like it used to be. Apparently you get charged for entry now too..
Mind, I guess having sex in the street IS a way to increase visibility..just in a bad way
Straight pride is obviously unneeded, however with how gay pride seems to be right now, I would say thats pretty unneeded too. Hopefully its just the newcastle one thats that way, but I doubt it.

Why is there straight pride!111!!! How unfair that straight people are not persecuted for their sexuality. Its just discrimination that they do not suffer so do not need such a day. I wish people attacked straight couples for holding hands so they could get more attention too. Waaahhhhh

It speaks tomes about how fragile a person must be to look at Pride and think 'Why don't I get a festival?!'
I've been with both genders and I know the difference between walking down the street holding hands with a woman and doing the same with a man. I've never feared for my safety because of someone thinking I was straight but I've certainly feared for my safety when I've been out with a man. As it was said in the OP, Pride is meant to be about celebrating sexual identities that has seen people who identify as not being straight being targetted by the law and/or killed by bigots. It's a celebration of how far we've come.
I've never struggled with either my identity of fear of reprisal from an angry bigoted randomer in the street when I've been in a relationship with a woman. Straight people aren't made to feel like they have to hide for fear of being ostracised or targetted and they never will so the idea of a straight pride festival is just a perversion of what Pride is and it's just an excuse for straight people to undermine the struggle of the LGBT by falsely equating their non-existent struggle with their sexuality to that of a people who are still oppressed by others today.
Be an ally, don't envy what you don't have because you're not oppressed.

06-06-2019, 09:41 AM
Hmm I didn't originally respond in humour. And even if this is a 'joke' or whatever, my resonses still stand to the many straights who do actually seem to think there should be straight pride and say so each time gay pride is mentioned. Who think its somehow proof of opression that people laugh at the idea of straight pride and like it to the likes of a 'white lives matter' movement, which would be..well unneeded and rather inflammatory.
I kind of see both sides of this being bi, and I can tell you..its extremely different as dezzy said, walking around holing hands with a girlfriend than it is with a boyfriend. Noone bats an eye when its a bloke. Now, I will admit we only got actual physical abuse once in over a year (a lot of 'lezzer' sneers and that, which I gues count as abuse but didn't escalate so are easily ignored) which is 'good' the over the top sexual comments from blokes was just ****ing gross, the way they seemed to think that just because 2 women were together that meant we were doing it for THEIR enjoyment  and they seemed to think they had even more 'right' than usual to grope and stuff. Once we were actually physically attacked by a group of women, but fairly 'luckily' we could both stand our own pretty well so nothing really came of that. From what friends tell me, and what I read though, men together have a very hard time of it in general if they do anything to show they are actually together, generally if they just walk about its fine as other men assume friends, but holding hands, any affection, anything, and the abuse starts. It seems women DO get the abuse too, but it tends to depend on if they are feminine or butch. Which yet again is ****ing wrong.
Went off on a slight tangent there tbh, but..while it might be trolling, a joke, whatever, its actually a topic that seems to crop up a hell of a lot in seriousness, so yeah. Buzzkill Vicky answering seriously :p

Application for ‘Straight Pride Parade’ approved by City of Boston.
An application for the proposed “Straight Pride Parade” in Boston was approved Wednesday by the city.
With their public event application, organizers got city permission to host a parade on Aug. 31 from noon to 3 p.m. However, they still need approvals from the police department and licensing board to receive a needed parade permit and entertainment license.
Mayor Marty Walsh has previously said the city could not deny the group behind the proposal, Super Happy Fun America, a permit for the event because of disagreements with the event organizers’ values or beliefs.
“Permits to host a public event are granted based on operational feasibility, not based on values or endorsements of belief,” the mayor said in early June.
