I didn't want today to pass without marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day. When those men stormed the beaches, dropped by parachutes, landed in gliders... they did it so that Europe and the world would be free. They had a hard fight, many of them died on the beach, or even sometimes before reaching the beach. When you look at their faces they are the same age as so many of our young men on this forum. I definitely wouldn't have been here if they hadn't shown such bravery; The allied troops, Americans, Canadians, British and the French people who helped them and sometimes died trying... They should never be forgotten.

We'll never see a generation like them again.

We wont , it's very sad , I didn't realise so many had died and how they died ,poor blokes some drowning before they even got to the beach , because their backpacks were too heavy and they thought the water was shallower , they must have been so scared , makes me well up thinking about them, so proud of them.

One tale told during yesterday's thing was of a young Scots guard who held his bagpipes high above his head whilst trying to get out the water and up the beach...he waded waist high in water pumping out the bagpipes to rally his comrades. .imagine just wandering up a beach playing bagpipes with all that mayhem going on...I cried at leat twice yesterday listening to the diaries being read out..truly humbling.

A great generation of heroes that will always have my utmost respect and admiration. The stories these veterans share are so moving and also haunting at the same time it doesn’t bare thinking about.

Will always respect the sacrifices they made for our freedom

yeah, me too. I have very mixed feelings about it all, as these people lost the best years of their lives and suffered the effects in the decades that followed. Not many got through it without physical or mental scars
