What a nice idea :D might see if the neighbours fancy a street party or something for the day <3
Why not have two bank holiday one on the Friday and one on the Monday?

It is a good move but really, just add another Bank Holiday for such a landmark occasion.
Don't just poke around with what's already in place.
They should have added one more to the Friday.
Moved the Mayday bank holiday to the following Monday.
For a 4 day commemorative event.
Made it like an Easter weekend not just pay lip service to such a major occasion.
Moving it the right thing to do imo, enough bank holidays in April/May as it is without adding another

Well if you only move around what already exists you do nothing new to mark such an event then.
So you detract from the importance iof the occasion in my view.
One extra bank holiday in one year, would not be in any way excessive.
We have fewer than most anyway.
So this important event just has the day marked with what was there earlier that week anywsy.
Nothing special added to the massive occasion.
I'd have marked it with a weeks events if I'd had my way.
The veterans alive still now, most aren't sadly likely to get the chance to mark any other landmark occasions like this.
Will be interesting if they again snub Russia from the commemoration like they did this year in such a petty fashion. The country that lost 20 million people in the war.

They really should either move the Spring bank holiday completely to October or give us another one, if Easter is late its a line of bank holidays, a little break end of October would be great

Yeah I don't think having 2 in May is necessary at all when you then only have 1 between then and Christmas 7 months later

Except on this occasion, it is May where the actual important date is.
Sometimes Easter is in March anyway so not always bank holidays in April and May.
This is to mark 75 years after the war.
When does that hapoen again.
For the veterans now in their 90s all we do is move an existing bank holiday to that date.
In effect we do nothing at all really then.
I don't think people having a day off work is the defining feature of paying your respects/marking a big occasion, moving the day is perfectly appropriate and it can still be commemorated suitably imo
We didn't have an extra holiday to mark 100 years since the armistice last year

Honestly it would make more sense for all bank Holidays to be Fridays instead of Mondays (economically speaking) because Fridays are already the least productive day by far. Productivity (in all companies) is high on Mondays and Tuesdays, drops a bit on Wednesday and Thursday, then steadily declines through Friday with people often leaving hours early for the weekend.
On a personal note, I also think Fri-Sat-Sun feels more like a 3 day weekend than Sat-Sun-Mon anyway, for some reason. I think Monday feels like a "new week" whether you have it as a day off or not. Harder to just relax. I'd also rather have the kids off school on a Friday than a Monday. Maybe I'm weird and over-thinking it... :joker:

For most people a bank holiday isn't a day off anyway as it used to be.
Of course it isn't the only thing to respect the occasion.
It does however open up the opportunity of less working time and a chance to mark the occasion specially for the remaining veterans.
As to last year, how many people of 118+ were still with us.
This may be the last opportunity to mark this with former serving veterans.
However all we do is move a bank holiday to the date.
Good grief as a Nation are we now at the point of being that petty and mean.
Anyway, if I had power there would have been a weeks event.
With at least a 4 day weekend holiday.
To ensure thanks and gratitude to the few now still with us who fought and give them a week to remember.
However just to actually do something, rather than move one bank holiday, in effect doing nothing at all really.
Nothing extra certainly and I think that miserly.

I agree that Fri Sat Sun feels more like a long weekend than Sat Sun Mon.
Also agree with Joey and others that an extra bank holiday rather than just changing it would mark the occasion better, make it more of an event.
Street Parties would be amazing.
