Was first reported on LBC radio.

[Two actors were attacked on their way to a theatre performance in what was described as a "cowardly homophobic hate crime".
Lucy Jane Parkinson and Rebecca Banatvala were starring in Rotterdam, which tells the story of a young gay woman, at Southampton's NST Campus.
The theatre company said they were left "hugely shaken" after an object was thrown at them on Saturday afternoon.
Hampshire police said it had received a report of homophobic abuse.
The final two performances of the
Olivier Award-winning play by Jon Brittain were cancelled as a result.]

How would the lads know they were gay? Surely the headline should read "2 Women's stoned " then later in the story it should say "They turned out to be gay"

Firstly, what difference does it make?

And secondly...

... I think they probably knew.

Can you not read it properly?

Ms Parkinson said as she kissed her partner, fellow actor Ms Banatvala, she was struck and knocked to the ground, leaving her with slight injuries.

She said they heard "young boys laughing" as the car drove off.

Ms Parkinson said: "We're just two people looking for happiness like everybody else.

It doesn't make 1 iota of difference, thats why I said why not say 2 women ?

But it isn't any worse that they just happen to be gay ,so why the dramatic headline ? Isn't it bad enough 2 women ( straight or gay) getting stoned ?

But if they got attacked whilst kissing, that is a homophobic attack? You are correct it’s bad enough that two women got attacked, but it’s important to portray it as a homophobic attack should it be one.

Because they were stoned while kissing, something that wouldn’t have happened if it was a man and a woman, so their sexuality is very much relevant to the story

Well when you see what has been going on for 7 weeks in Birmingham and continues to escalate with no resolution in sight, it seems to be encouraging these attacks

It's clearly a homophobic attack, trying to downplay it as anything else is gross.

Absolutely awful and has really affected a lot of us in the town. Doesn't make me or friends feel that safe being ourselves when things like this are happening 5 minutes up the road.

Because them being gay is the entire REASON they were attacked?

..this is awful..there really does seem to be a huge wave of intolerance atm and I’m not sure why but it’s very, very worrying...and sexuality appears to have become the most recent ‘target’ of hateful actions.....

I think like most crimes it’s always been going on but it’s making mainstream news more and in the search for readers the papers look for more cases.

What I have noticed more so recently is the intolerance on this forum!

There is a lot of anger on this site and it’s not good.

See in this case, this clearly was without question an outright homophobic attack. I can't see there being any more to it than that.

I still deny that there's any problem with pointing out that the other recent attack is a nuanced issue that more heavily leans towards the underlying dangers for all women when faced with threatening groups of men, though, and I think the idea that we have to "keep it simple" or "paint in broad strokes" is generally an error in terms of tackling the actual issues.
