Former Boston Red Sox star David 'Big Papi' Ortiz has been shot and wounded in the Dominican Republic, and has come out of emergency surgery in stable condition.

Ortiz, a three-time World Series champion during his career with the Red Sox, was shot at the Dial Bar and Lounge at around 8.50pm on Sunday in Santo Domingo.

Authorities said a man got off the back of a motorcycle and shot Ortiz in the back at nearly point-blank range as he was dining in the open-air lounge with television presenter Jhoel Lopez, who was also injured in the shooting.
The bullet entered Ortiz's lower back and was a through-and-through, officials said.

There were initial reports that the shooting was an attempted robbery, but officials now deny that robbery was a motive, and police sources say the shooting may have even been an attempted contract killing.

Dominican National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte told ESPN that the suspected gunman was captured by a crowd of witnesses at the bar and beaten up.

The suspect, identified by police as Eddy Feliz Garcia, was taken into police custody. Bautista told ESPN that police are waiting until he has been treated for his injuries before questioning him.

yes, more than likely, it's just not a safe place to be and if you are a celeb, you would be at the greatest risk
