A follow-up to Ridley Scott’s epic drama Gladiator is in the works, but the project remains one of the most secretive in Hollywood.

News of the follow-up was confirmed by Scott back in 2018, with the director vowing to return eighteen years after the original was released.

Information about the sequel has been kept tightly under wraps until recently, when Men In Black: International producers Walter F Parke and Laurie MacDonald confirmed they were working on the film.

Speaking to HeyUGuys, MacDonald said: “We’re working with Ridley. That’s one we wouldn’t touch unless we felt in a way to do it was legitimate. We’re working with an amazing writer as well – Peter Craig.”

Speaking about the setting of the film, Parkes continued: “It picks up the story 30 years later… 25 years later.”

Earlier rumours about the film suggested that it would focus on Lucious, the son of Connie Nielsen’s character Lucilla, as well as the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s character Commodus. While the new comments don’t confirm the rumours, the time frames for the alleged plot seem to make sense.

Parke and MacDonald previously worked as executive producers on the original Gladiator in 2000. Meanwhile, writer Craig has worked on parts one and two of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, and is also involved with the upcoming Top Gun sequel.

It's been YEARS since I saw the original but if I'm remembering it right... it's heavily implied that Lucius is actually Maximus' illegitimate son? He's officially the son of Lucius Verus I, but obviously, it's suggested that Maximus and Lucilla had some sort of relationship at some point in the past. A sequel would make more sense if that's confirmed by Lucilla early on.

The whole roman empire period was a fascinating era. There is so much that can be covered there with most of the leaders being complete nutters, surrounded by back stabbers. It really doesn't get much better than that

I never really bought into that. Lucilla was just a former lover from his youth. Maximus was a very honorable man. No way would he be unfaithful to his wife.
