Sentences for animal cruelty could rise from six months to FIVE YEARS
70 per cent of Britons supported tougher prison sentences for animal abusers
The proposed law will see an increase from the current maximum sentence of six months
Courts will be able to take a tougher approach to cases such as dog fighting, abuse of puppies and kittens, or gross neglect of farm animals
all sentences for animal cruelty could rise to five years under new legislation going before Parliament today.

The proposed law includes a significant increase from the current maximum sentence of six months.

It follows a public consultation last year, in which more than 70 per cent of Britons supported tougher prison sentences for those who abuse animals.

Not before time Kate, animal abusers are the scum of the earth, they should get longer but this is a step in the right direction, that is ,of course if they implement it.

I'd have looked for more than 5 years.
However certainly a step in the right direction.

For me, causing suffering to animals or wilfully killing them is the same as doing so to other humans.

Totally agree with you there.

It's about time cruelty to animals was taken more seriously. Like I always say when these kinds of threads arise, animal wardens in the USA are trained to look for signs of child abuse because there is often a connection between animal and child cruelty.

why would 30% not agree to this? imagine being that person who thinks animal cruelty isnt a problem..

Some people treat animals as objects,
Infuriating but sadly true

Fox hunters and Tories

The for me despicable, Kate Hoey, of Labour certainly supports it.
How any Labour voters vote for her is beyond me, I wouldn't.

The Conservatives however are the only Party that wanted to bring it back, and had Theresa May or David Cameron gained big majorities.
They'd have presented legislation to do so too.

After Labour made it illegal after coming to power in 1997.

Dominic Raab is a patron.

I think everyone would be surprised to learn how many Tories don't want hunting reintroduced. It's barbaric and has no place in the 21st century.

I understand that foxes have to be controlled. I don't think the best way to do that is to chase an animal until it's terrified and exhausted and then have a pack of dogs rip it apart. If they have to control numbers, employ a marksman.

All slaughter is cruel, you should just admit that instead of acting like the meat you eat died a lovely peaceful death

They should be replaced with more ethical methods.

No-one's saying that. We eat meat. No need to include ritualistic torture in the process.
