A student paramedic has died after a BMW crashed into the back of the ambulance she was travelling in.
The first-year paramedic, 31, was inside the emergency vehicle when it was struck by a BMW 3 series in Needwood, Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire just before 6pm yesterday. She was airlifted to hospital in Birmingham but later died of her injuries.
Two of her colleagues were also rushed to hospital, along with the BMW driver, who is receiving treatment for a leg injury.
Emergency services were scrambled to the scene at 5.45pm where they found the ambulance completely smashed in on its side and rear.
An investigation is under way, with collision experts still working at the scene through the night.
Staffordshire Police have asked for witnesses to come forward, especially anyone with dashcam footage of the incident.
West Midlands Ambulance Service Trust chief executive Anthony Marsh said: 'This is an incident that will affect every member of our staff.
