I did TIBBs favourite British sitcom a while back, now I'm gonna run TIBBs all Time favourite movie.

I shall again do it in heats, from each decade, the top places in each decade will go through to the final.

Coming soon!

Nice :D Quite a few movies come out each year though, let alone each decade!

Maybe you could do January 1960, Feb 1960 etc etc etc and the winner(/s) of each month go(/es) on to the final for that year?

You could do part 1 and part 2

That 2 thread 50 movies

Marsh.

Do it a bit like Most Loved. Everyone who wants to take part submits a list of 10 nominations for each category (or decade etc). Then open voting for the most popular nominations.

Do it a bit like Most Loved. Everyone who wants to take part submits a list of 10 nominations for each category (or decade etc). Then open voting for the most popular nominations. That's an idea. Maybe people could pick there top 20 in each decade in a ranked order, 20 points for first, 1 point for 20th.Then we should get enough films to do a top 50 countdown of each decade. And then each decade winner will go into a poll.

Alf

How far back in decades could most people go? I could go back as far as the 1930's but I doubt there's many others on here who could go back that far?

And they might need to take over if I'm sent back to Tibb jail. Which is inevitable.

If you don't include the 30s then The Wizard of Oz or Classic Laurel and Hardy films doesn't get a chance.

The 40s has to be in, probably the strongest decade for Hollywood and also a great era for British cinema.

The main reason I want to do this is to raise awareness of classic cinema, try and keep it alive and not forgotten, and maybe interest someone to take a journey into it.

You could do like 50's to now in decades, and then like a list of honourable mentions of pre-50's, the big ones that most people are bound to have seen at least once or partly, or "heard of" at the very, very least.

Alf
19-07-2019, 11:32 PM
I know what film Ammi is choosing for her number 1 of the sixties.

I think I know what Shaun will choose for his number one of the 90s, but not certain.

Apart from that, I can't predict anything else that is gonna happen, which is exciting.

So the plan is to start with the early decades first, that gives this current decade a chance to end, I know some need to see the new Tarantino film before making a decision.

We'll start with the 30s and 60s together. Then we'll do the 40s and 50s together. Then the 70s, then the 80s, then the 90s, then the 00s and then this current decade. We'll do it by one decade at a time.

You send me a pm with your top 20 of each decade ranked in order, I will then add up the scores and we'll have a top 50 countdown for each decade.

Are people happy with this format? Or do you have a suggestion you'd like to make, about anything?

If enough people agree with that, then we can maybe get this underway this weekend. I need feedback, as Dina Carroll once said "don't be a stranger."

Don't send me your film choices yet, I'll let you know in a new thread when we start.

...I don’t know, Alf...the only thing I can think is to do categories/genres...rather than decades...your top dramas/top comedies etc with however many choices you want to give and with each genre crossing and including all decades...?...but what I always say with these things...(...because it was something said to me when I was doing ML ...)...is do it your way, make it an Alf Production and it’ll give you lots of pleasure ....good luck...

The Wizard of Oz is unique as colour production was literally invented half way through shooting so they adopted it, hence the start in b/w!Not to be a nay-sayer LT but I don't think this is actually true... Technicolor was available before production started but using Technicolor was insanely expensive compared to black and white film,so because there was going to be this magical transition anyway (between the real world and Oz) they decided to film the beginning and end without colour to save money, and for creative reasons emphasising the contrast between the plain ol' Kansas and the magical Oz "over tha rainbow", etc.

You couldn't get the same effect now because colour is obviously the norm, but I imagine it was quite a "moment" in those old cinemas when the audience was watching a normal B&W movie and then all of a sudden it fades to black and comes back in vibrant hues :flutter:

Alf
20-07-2019, 01:54 PM
If you want to do the countdown threads Shaun, then that's fine by me.

Alf
20-07-2019, 02:08 PM
So I was thinking, if you want to send your top 20 films for the first heat, which will be a combination of films from the 1930s and 1960s, then you can do so now if you wish. However, I'll give you a week or so to send them in, so there's no rush. We'll do 1 heat a week.

If you haven't seen 20 films from this era, then just list as many as you've seen and liked, It doesn't matter if you don't get 20.

Send your list, ranked in order from 1 to 20 by pm to me by Friday and then Shaun can decide when he wants to do the first countdown thread. Then we do heat 2.

I hope you all understand me? I have a very strong Hul accent

Alf

Quick tip, just type in Google, "films of 1966" (or whichever year you want to research) or maybe type in "best films of" and then the year.

You might just find something you forgot about.

No. The opening was filmed in sepia-tone and Oz was filmed in colour in order to make Oz appear more magical.

I can see James' point but I think the main drawback at the moment is merely the decade... I don't think anyone outside of perhaps 10 members who actively use the Films section could name more than 5 movies they enjoy from the 30s.
